Dolphins continue youth movement ... may have made a mistake

One thing that you have to like about BILL PARCELLS is that this is not the first time that he has taken over the worst team in the league, but continues to rebuild and retool with youth .... and  still puts a winning team on the field during the process. Here's the list of cuts that he made on Saturday:

** CONTRACTS TERMINATED**
TE David Martin
DT Montavious Stanley

**WAIVED**
S Jonathon Amaya
DT Ryan Baker
DE Lionel Dotson
G Ray Feinga
LB J.D. Folsom
T Andrew Gardner
OL Andrew Hartline
CB Kevin Hobbs
FB Rolly Lumbala
LB Chris McCoy
DB Nate Ness
WR Julius Pruitt
LB Austin Spitler
OG Donald Thomas
WR Patrick Turner
LB Erik Walden
S Ross Weaver
QB Pat White

Yesterday, the Dolphins made the following moves:

  • Declared C Joe Berger as the starter against the Bills in week 1 over Jake Grove
  • Declared CB Jason Allen as the starter over Sean Smith
  • Placed CB Will Allen on IR which ends his season (and more than likely career in Miami)
  • Released veterans DE Marques Douglas, DE Charles Grant, and OG Cory Procter
  • Signed DE Clifton Geathers, OLJermey Parnell, OLJoe Reitz, DE Robert Rose off waivers

Now that is a lot to talk about and you can follow a lot of that on our forum. What I just do not understand is cutting veterans TE DAVID MARTIN and DE CHARLES GRANT due to money. They're making the veteran minimum, so, how much are you really saving by not having them on your roster in week 1? With Grove wasting money on the bench due to injury issues that were obvious before we signed him to that large contract, and this being an uncapped year, I just do not get it. After week 1, you can resign them to the same contract and it would not be guaranteed.

Anyways, it looks like the Bills took a page out of Parcells book by signing TE DAVID MARTIN to squeeze out a lot of our plays that we did not reveal in the preseason. With that signing they not only get a look into the offensive playbook, but they also get a peek at the Dolphins new blitz schemes that new DC MIKE NOLAN  will be unloading on them next week. Still, there is no need to panic and our Trifecta may have expected  the Bills to do such a thing. The bottom line is that the talent level on the field next Sunday will favor the Dolphins and any peek into our playbook will not totally matter if the Dolphins execute that playbook.

OOPS Not sure what was in my coffee this morning, but I posted that the Patriots had signed WR Patrick Turner ... and I took off with it. Sorry about that. He actually signed with the Jets, and with their roster of receivers, you know he will not stick on that team. If he had the work ethic to improve he would still be with the Dolphins. He was signed to get a peek into our offensive and defensive schemes ... that is all.

One thing to think about is that with those moves, the Dolphins now have 18 first or second year players on the 53 man roster ... and that is a lot. In fact, that is enough to make COACH SPARANO drop a lot of weight ... and he has;)

Have yourselves a fun Labor Day! And let's get ready for some Football!!! (turn the volume down)

Dolphins make final cuts
Written by Tony Simmons
Sunday, 05 September 2010

The Dolphins made there final cuts on Saturday, and as usual, there were some cuts that were no surprise at all and some that got your attention.

No one had to be surprised that Pat White got cut, as the surprise 2nd round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft never really made the progress needed to justify keeping him on the team.  Patrick Turner finally showed some flashes in this preseason, but that was to late for the 3rd round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

Added to the 2009 NFL Draft casualties for Miami were 6th round pick OT Andrew Gardner and 7th round pick LB J.D Folsum.

Some cuts that surprised me a little were CB Nate Ness,  OG Donald Thomas, a starter for the Dolphins in 2008 as a 6th round pick, and finally the Dolphins cut TE  David Martin, who they just resigned a few weeks ago.  There is talk that the Dolphins could bring Martin back after the first game of the season, but they probably will also look to bring a TE in now as they only have Anthony Fasano and John Nalbone on the roster now at the TE position.

DT Ryan Baker, DE Lionel Dotson, WR Julius Pruitt, S Jonathan Amaya, OG Ray Feinga, OG/C Andrew Hartline, CB Kevin Hobbs, FB Rolly Lumbala, LB Chris McCoy, LB Austin Spitler and S Ross Weaver round out the final cuts.

One thing about the Dolphins, they don't have any issues going with undrafted free agents if they can make plays and play the game.  WR Roberto Wallace and Marlon Moore made the team over Patrick Turner because they showed more during the preseason not only as receivers, but they bring special teams contributions as well, something Turner did not bring.  Also, ILB Micah Johnson made the team and made a definite impression on the Dolphins staff.  Micah Johnson was a guy that I thought would be an idea fit for Mike Nolan's ILB position as a thumper on the inside coming out of the draft.  His stock dropped because of a knee injury he suffered in Kentucky's bowl game and the slow 40 times he ran.  But he has persevered and is now a member of the Dolphins and he looks to have a solid future with the Dolphins.

It will be interesting to see who is placed on the practice squad and there are probably a few more moves that Miami will make.  That being said, the season kicks off next Sunday at Buffalo.  Football is HERE indeed.
