If you think about it, it's silly to be saying that the first game of the season is a must win, isn't it? Not in this case. Miami faces six 2009 playoff teams in their subsequent seven games, and the non playoff team is Pittsburgh; not too much of a break there. Miami is starting off on the road, always a tough thing to do. They play a division rival on opening day, an even tougher task to complete. And it's a team Miami has not beaten in Ralph Wilson Stadium since 2004. However, with that said, Buffalo might just be the worst team in the NFL, and here is why:
First off, Buffalo does not have the talent to run their new 34 Defense. In order to run this type of scheme, you need several things, but the two main ingredients are a viable Nose Guard, and an explosive pass rush coming from your OLB's. Buffalo has neither. To be honest, the guys they have starting at those positions would not make Miami's roster. Because of this Buffalo will need to use a lot of blitzing to try and get after the QB; the problem with that is that they do not have a physical secondary, (before or after the catch), that can compliment that. Miami should be able to shove the ball down their throats all night.
Secondly, the Bills don't have an Offensive Line capable of creating run lanes for their talented backfield, nor of protecting their sketchy QB Trent Edwards. They have a couple of decent second year players at each guard spot, however, they are more finesse blockers than anything else, (think Samson Satele), and, along with the rest of the offensive line, will get pushed around by 34 D-line's like Miami's. I think Miami should be able to get plenty of penetration up the middle on Sunday.
The thing about Buffalo is that they have a playmaker here or there to tease you, but in the end they are the 2007 Miami Dolphins. They just don't have the foundation. Like I mentioned, they don't have the right personnel for their scheme, they don't have an offensive line or QB to lead them and additionally don't have the coaching. Miami is a much better team than Buffalo, and no matter the situation there should be no excuses this Sunday. Miami should, and must go out and win this one...And win it handedly.
The Dolphins schedule after this game is tough, and it is imperative that Miami goes out and grabs a win off the bat. They have to start off hot this season. Miami killed them in their first match-up last season, and I expect a similar performance. Miami got more physical, more mature and more aggressive this off season, on both sides of the football. No excuses, Miami. Go out there and kick some butt.
