The Dolphins will be fortunate to grab Earl Thomas or Dez Bryant here. Thomas is a rangy free safey with excellent cover skills. While at times overagressive he has recovery speed. His zone skills are top notch baiting QB’s before making his move. Not afraid to make the big hit and will do so often. Needs work on his tackling but works hard in practice and directs the secondary. He has been described along with Berry as the prototype of the new NFL safety in the Ed Reed mold.

Thomas might not make it past the Seahawks or Browns depending who is higher on their list. From a perceived skill perspective Dez Bryant is just a good a grab if he falls to the Phins. Bryant would be a spectacular pickup with his sure hands and route running ability he would open up a whole new dimension for the Dolphin offense.

Beyond Thomas and Bryant, CJ Spiller is the next best option. Spiller has a Reggie Bush type of skill set making him an asset in every facet of the offense. Dan Williams is an option at Nose Tackle but with the unusual amount of prospects available at Nose this year look for the Phins to grab one later. My money is on Jeff Owens a fourth or fifth round prospect from Georgia who put up 225 pounds 44 times at the combine and ran a sub 5 fourty.

Pass Rushers available here include Everson Griffin, Jason Pierre Paul, Brandon Graham, and Sergio Kindle. Everson Griffin is the biggest and the fastest of these prospects and has experience playing in a hybrid defense occasionally dropping into coverage.

1) Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State, 6'2, 225 lbs, 4.55 40 - Davone Bess, Greg Camarillo, Ted Ginn & Brian Hartline are all solid wide receivers and Hartline showed a lot of upside in his rookie season and lead the team with 3 TD. The other wide receivers combine had 2 more touchdowns. In 2008 the wide receivers produced 5 touchdowns. You have players on teams with more touchdown passes than the entire Miami wide receiver core. In 2008 Anthony Fasano and David Martin were the leaders in touchdown receptions with 7 & 3 respectively. Simply put, 5 TD per season from your wide receiver core is unacceptable, and if you want to become a dangerous, big play passing attack to go with your top notch rushing attack, a playmaker is needed. The question is will Bill Parcells pull the trigger, and this time I finally believe the answer to that question is yes if Dez Bryant is on the board. He is that caliber of player. Big, strong, excellent in the redzone, producing YAC and providing Henne with that go to receiver that the Dolphins need so badly.

2) Nate Allen, FS, South Florida, 6'0, 207 lbs, 4.5 40 - The Dolphins missed badly on Gibril Wilson and tried unsuccessfully to address FS in free agency, as they missed on Antrel Rolle and Ryan Clark, who signed with the Giants and back with the Steelers respectively. Allen gives the Dolphins the physical nature and size they like, but also give the Dolphins something they have lacked at the FS position, a guy with excellent range and solid ball skills. Smart, leader on the field and can be the guy to handle calls in the secondary in regards to coverages. Playmaker with 9 career interceptions while at South Florida.

3) Jimmy Graham, TE, Miami, 6'6, 260 lbs, 4.56 40 - The Dolphins really missed David Martin and his ability to strecth the field and give the Dolphins a threat against LB and safeties to go down the field. As good as Anthony Fasono was in 2008, he regressed and struggled in 2009. John Nalbone is a 5th round pick from 2009 and he never saw the field and Joey Haynos is servicable. The Dolphins have been scouting Graham since he made his appearance with the Hurrincane football team this past year. He was with the Dolphins at the Senior Bowl and they worked him out again recently. He is raw and will need work, but his upside is hard to deny and he could actually go in the 2nd round as his stock has taken off. If he is there in the 3rd round, I believe Miami will take him. Brandon Spikes, the ILB from Florida is also a consideration as his stock has dropped because of his slow time in the 40, but he is an outstanding football player.

Analysis: And there it is. Bill Parcells had a lengthy 1 on 1 discussion with Dez Bryant on the second day of a 2-day visit he had with Miami. Bryant’s concerns are not with the law but with maturity and motivation. I think that Miami can provide the structure that Dez needs, and I think Parcells shocks everybody in Dolphin nation and goes with Dez Bryant at 12. Pass rusher, to me, is no doubt the biggest hole on the roster, but Miami will find it hard to pass up this kind of a playmaker to give to their franchise QB. This is more of a gut feeling than anything, though. Who really knows how that 1v1 meeting with Parcells went?

Re-signing 35-year-old nose tackle Jason Ferguson gives the Dolphins depth, but Ferguson must serve an eight-game suspension (banned substances). That makes the position a critical need area and, with so many teams using more "30" fronts, VP Bill Parcells will invest in the draft's top prototype at nose tackle.

Not everyone views Morgan as a linebacker, but it appears the Dolphins are among those that do. He may lack the speed and athleticism to be an elite pass rusher at the position, but he'll immediately help improve their run defense. With Cameron Wake providing an above-average pass rush on the weak side, Morgan would be an ideal fit at strong-side linebacker. The Dolphins have also shown an interest in Taylor Mays and Earl Thomas, both of whom are options here.

The Draft Tek CMD has had at least 4 different prospects slotted for Miami at #12 over the last 3 months: Dan Williams, C.J. Spiller, Brandon Graham, and, like sim. 24, WR Dez Bryant. All of them make sense for different reasons, but Bryant is one that garners the most risk. While a true #1 WR would add a different element to the Dolphins, Bryant comes with a lot of baggage. However, he is a dynamic playmaker, something that Miami has not had since - perhaps - Duper & Clayton? If Miami makes Bryant the pick, it's a safe bet that they've done their homework and believe they can keep him dedicated and motivated to perform at a high level. - Joe Mays, Draft Tek Analyst

Could this finally be the year Miami selects a much needed WR with their top pick or will they add much needed youth to the DL? Jason Ferguson is a 35-year-old injury plagued player who is suspended for the first 8 games of the season and with Paul Soliai only a serviceable backup, look for Miami to address this area of need in the draft since a NT is a big key to a 3-4 defense of Parcells. I have no doubt in my mind this pick will be a rush linebacker. Joey Porter is gone. Matt Roth was cut during the season. Jason Taylor turns 37 before the start of the season. Those guys were their 3 leading pass rushers last year. Bill Parcells love to take linebacker and he knows the importance of having a strong pass rush. However, which one he picks is a bit of a mystery. Jason Pierre Paul has the DeMarcus Ware upside that could interest him, but he’s extremely unproven and would be a huge risk here.

There have been rumors in recent days that the Dolphins love Georgia RLB Derrick Morgan. Morgan is the most proven pass rusher in the draft class, but he’s not a natural fit for a 3-4. However, the Dolphins appear to think he is. Brandon Graham will be in consideration as well, but he also isn’t a great fit for a 3-4 and he’s not as good of a pass rusher as Morgan.

Though he was re-signed this month, 35-year-old NT Jason Ferguson is obviously not the long-term DT solution for Miami. Williams is. The run-stuffing big boy follows in the great tradition of the Tennessee DTs before him (Albert Haynesworth, Justin Harrell, Aubreyo Franklin) and could be that anchor of the Miami D-line for years to come. In many ways it’s hard to imagine this Dolphins organization using such an early pick on a wide receiver. However, Miami is in desperate need of an impact wide receiver to the point where they were even considering bringing in Antonio Bryant, who once threw a towel in Bill Parcells’ face. That is why Oklahoma State’s Dez Bryant would be a logical fit if the Dolphins were lucky enough to have him fall this far. Bryant only played in three games as a junior before being suspended for minor a violation of NCAA rules, which has seemingly led some to forget what a great player he is. Despite the layoff pro scouts still consider Bryant to be one of the premier talents in this draft. Checking in at a solid 6-2 and 225 pounds, Bryant may not have elite speed but he is very elusive, a great leaper with terrific ball skills and catches everything in sight. Bryant has the potential to be a true #1 target at the next level and many feel he is just as good of a prospect as Michael Crabtree was coming out of college, if not better. If Bryant is gone, which is certainly possible, the Dolphins would probably turn their attention to the defense. Sergio Kindle of Texas could be a replacement for Joey Porter as a pass rushing outside linebacker, Dan Williams of Tennessee would be an ideal successor to Jason Ferguson at nose tackle and Earl Thomas of Texas could be the playmaking free safety that they have been searching for.

*Don’t buy into the Dolphins possibly drafting Dez Bryant. Parcells doesn’t want to bring in another “diva receiva.” He’s going to be looking for linebackers. Joey Porter is officially out of Miami and the Dolphins desperately need a pass rushing outside linebacker for their 3-4 scheme, in order to fill Porter’s void. Linebacker is a position Bill Parcells knows very well and loves to draft. This is the same area of the draft where we saw DeMarcus Ware (pick 11) and Shawn Merriman (pick 12) get drafted back in 2005. Much like 2005, Derrick Morgan is the highest ranked defensive end in the draft, but Pierre-Paul resembles what the Dolphins need at outside linebacker more than any other player. In 2005 many thought Parcells was going to pick Merriman, but he liked Ware better. This year, he could be faced with a similar situation with both Morgan and Pierre-Paul available. Pierre-Paul has the higher ceiling. He’s got the size, the speed, and the strength Parcells is looking for. Oh and Dolphins Stadium is less than 30 miles away from Pierre-Paul’s high school.

Ireland skewed toward taking chances last season with the selections of Vontae Davis, Pat White, Sean Smith and Patrick Turner. They clearly got bigger, especially at cornerback, where Davis and Smith combined for 25 starts as rookies, but how productive the class will turn out in three years remains up for debate. Parcells was one of four decision makers who consulted his owner about drafting Percy Harvin in the first round a year ago after he tested positive for marijuana at the Combine. Bryant's bad decisions cost his team more severely in college, as he was suspended for most of his final season. With a roster devoid of playmakers and the ability to make Bryant his personal project, Parcells, and Ireland, could be willing to take another swing for the fences.

Team Needs: LB/DE, DT/NT, WR, S, OL

Alternative: DE/LB Jason Pierre-Paul, DT Dan Williams, DE/LB Sergio Kindle, WR Dez Bryant

NOTE: Graham is this years version of Chargers DE/LB Larry English, who end up going a lot higher then many thought he would in last years draft. Graham had a dominating week of practice at the Senior Bowl and also dominated the Senior Bowl GAME, he is the ideal fit in a 3-4 as a Rush-LB. Parcell has had a lot of luck with Michigan players lately: Jake Long and Chad Henne, Graham is a player that could continue that lucky streak because he is a relentless pass rusher, plus the Dolphins NEED some pass rushers since Jason Taylor and Joey Porter are gone.

The Dolphins re-signed Jason Ferguson despite the fact that he will likely be suspended for the first 8 games of the season. Ferguson is still a good player even at 35 but he is obviously not the long term answer at Nose Tackle. So DT Dan Williams would also be a great fit for that defense, but a Pass Rusher on the outside is more valuable then a interior lineman.

Sergio Kindle is a very versatile defensive player. He can rush off the end or stand up and play linebacker. He is a similar player to Brian Orakpo who had a great rookie season for the Redskins last year. This draft pick for Miami will be between Kindle and DT Dan Williams. The signing of Carlos Dansby could lean towards taking Williams but I think they will go with Kindle because he can play multiple positions.

The Dolphins could be tempted by Texas outside linebacker Sergio Kindle (it seems everyone's getting a Kindle these days), but the run-stuffing Williams allows Miami to contemplate life beyond Jason Ferguson.

Dan Williams is the ideal nose tackle in a 3-4 defense. He would be a great selection in the 1st round for many 3-4 teams, including the Dolphins. Another thing to look for with Dan Williams... A team that has a franchised NT (49ers, Steelers, Patriots) could select Dan Williams and then trade the rights to their current NT because a long term deal can not be agreed to with him.

With the Dolphins filling their major need at OLB by signing Karlos Dansby, the Dolphins are able to fill another major need and also get tremendous value at this pick. Rolando McClain is tempting, but a 3-4 ILB does not have the same value as a 3-4 NT. With Jason Ferguson suspended the first 8 games of the season and already 35 years old, the Dolphins need to find their future nose-tackle. Williams looks to be the top 3-4 nose-tackle in the draft. Wide receiver is another need, but with Dez Bryant off the board, there is little value at this spot.

Round 2: Arrelious Benn, WR, Illinois
The Dolphins need a top receiving threat, and Benn is everything you want in a top receiver. He falls because he is also a headcase and has the case of the dropsies, like many other top receivers.

With Joey Porter gone and Jason Taylor a FA OLB in the 3-4 is a huge need. I believe there are a number of hybrid players in this draft that the Dolphins could get in the later rounds but a true NT is quite thin this year. Ferguson is out for 8 games and Paul Solial is just average. Even if Solial turns it on they have no depth behind him.

Round 2: Arrelious Benn, WR, Illinois
The Dolphins finally get their big receiver.

Derrick Morgan

The Dolphins need to add a young pass rusher in this draft. Parcells is famous for drafting linebackers in the 1st round and this selection only adds to his history. A lot of people, including myself feel that Derrick Morgan is a strict 4-3 DE, however he has gather some looks from 3-4 teams who feel that he has the most potential as a 3-4 rush OLB. I feel that Morgan is athletic enough to play in both schemes, but I would list him as a 4-3 guy. Despite what scouts say, Morgan could very well be drafted as a 3-4 OLB; he's tremendous pass rusher and that's what the Dolphins need.

Round 2: Demaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech
Miami take Thomas who falls a bit because of an injury. He has some questions about his route running skills, but he gives Miami a big receiving threat for Chad Henne.

Round 3: Reshad Jones, S, Georgia
The Dolphins do not have a starting FS. Jones is a young safety with a good amount of potential. He brings more youth to their secondary.

It would have been easy go give them Tennessee's Dan Williams because Ferguson's future is murky for multiple reasons (age, injury problems, suspension) and Soliai is not good enough to replace him full time. Since he is off the board things become more difficult. Pass rusher. Projecting players to a 3-4 from defensive end in college is ridiculously difficult. I am far from convinced JPP is really going this high after just one huge year (7 starts) for the Bulls coming over from the JC ranks. However, Porter is out of the mix and Taylor might as well be. There goes 16 sacks from last year. They should get a little more from Cameron Wake, but can stand to add a little insurance if he disappoints in a larger role. I still think this is the call.

Round 2: Cam Thomas, DT, North Carolina
In this scenario the Dolphins couldn't get Williams (Tennessee) in the first round or Cody (Alabama) here, which means the sweat will be running down a few foreheads in their war room. They really need to walk out of this draft with someone to stick at the nose position. It's a difficult spot to fill and waiting any longer would not be prudent.

There are a lot of directions the team could go here, but nose tackle is one of the team's biggest needs, and Williams appears to be one of the safer picks available for the Dolphins at this spot.

Some NFL insiders have said that Kindle is actually better than Brian Orakpo was coming out of college and that is certainly high praise. Bill Parcells is going to have his choice of outside linebackers here and he can’t go wrong with a number of athletic pass rushers.

Bill Parcells has spent a whopping six first-round selections on linebackers. Make it seven. Jason Pierre-Paul is a raw, one-year wonder with a high bust probability, but he also has a ridiculous upside. That, along with his impressive size (6-5, 270) and Combine workout (4.64 40) will coax Parcells into drafting the South Florida product.

The bottom line is that the Dolphins need to improve their pass rush. Joey Porter was cut, while Jason Taylor turns 36 on Sept. 1. Taylor seems like he's going to sign with the Jets or Patriots, which makes this pick even more likely to happen. Someone besides Cameron Wake needs to get to the quarterback, so Parcells will be targeting Pierre-Paul or maybe Sergio Kindle at No. 12 (Brandon Graham does not have the size Parcells covets).

By the way, I've received numerous e-mails arguing that Parcells won't take Pierre-Paul because of his inexperience. Athletically, Pierre-Paul matches up well with DeMarcus Ware. And Ware was just a 2-year starter at Troy. He wasn't exactly overly experienced either.

Other 2010 NFL Draft Possibilities:

1. Dan Williams, NT - Jason Ferguson is a 35-year-old free agent. Nose tackle is undoubtedly a big need.

2. Joe Haden, CB - Cornerback is not a need, but free safety is. The Dolphins could draft Joe Haden with the intention of moving Sean Smith over to free safety.
