1) Dan Williams, NT,  6'2, 327 lbs, Tennessee.  When a future Hall of Famer like Ray Lewis lobbies for a big NT in front of him like Haloti Ngata, you know the importance of the nose tackle position.  Jason Ferguson has been remarkable at 35 years old and still be productive at the NT position, but he is coming off a serious muscle tear in his thigh and Paul Soliai has been to inconsistent to count on still.  In a 3-4 defense, if you don't have a nose tackle, you don't have the guts of your defense.  When Ferguson went down the Dolphins gave up 40 yard more rushing per game.  Williams is stout and demands a double team, yet he is explosive enough to get push inside and cause havoc.  He had 160 tackles, 25 tackles for loss and 7 sacks in his 45 game career as a Vol.  Other consideration are Rolando McClain, Brandon Graham & Dez Bryant for the pick at #12.

Miami - Brandon Graham, DE/OLB, Michigan - The Dolphins need help at LB more than anywhere else on the field, and with McClain off the board, there is no ILB really worth this pick. Bill Parcells goes with the big time pass rusher in Graham and gives himself a hell of a duo for the future with Graham and Cam Wake. The question then becomes who plays the strong side? Graham is built to be more of a SOLB because of his size, strength, and unique ability against the run. Wake is more of the pure pass rusher, which you would automatically think weak side, however Miami clearly likes him on the left side. In any case, I guess it's a good problem to have. Graham is a heck of a player though, and would be a solid pick.

Bill Parcells had repeatedly turned to veteran Jason Ferguson at nose guard, but with the 35 year-old former Dolphin being suspended for eight games after testing positive for banned substances, the Dolphins' Executive Vice President may have to look elsewhere for the run plugger in the middle of his 3-4 defense. With so many teams switching to the odd-man front and veteran options limited, Parcells and Co. might have to invest early in Williams, a prototypical nose guard who could be coming into his own.

Bill Parcells is still calling the shots in Miami, which means the Dolphins are likely to address the defensive front seven with this selection. Paul Soliali did an adequate job filling in for the injured (and now UFA) Jason Ferguson last season, but he isn't a long-term solution. Williams has shown he has the size and strength to play nose tackle which is becoming an increasingly sought-after position as more and more teams transition to the 3-4 defense.

The addition of ILB Dansby alters the Dolphins plans a bit. No longer must they draft an ILB within the first 2 rounds; they are now free to address other needs. While RB doesn't fall into the glaring needs category, Spiller remains the most electric player in the draft. You build long-term contenders by taking the perceived best player available, not reaching for needs. Sure this pick could easily be Dan Williams, Earl Thomas, or an OLB. ***Pet Cat Alert*** Parcels is really into bigger players so long as they can still play well and "Mount" Cody fits that description perfectly. Cody can help bring their defense back to dominance. He is obviously a space eater at 356 lbs, but Cody's motor is underrated. He really turned up the effort a few notches his senior year and regularly chased after ball carriers lateraly. Cody doesn't have many pass rushing moves, but has a good bull rush and won't be blocked by one man. For his size he could stand to get a little stronger (22 reps of 225 lbs at his pro day), but as he his he is still a great player.

Miami will take a long, hard look at Arrelious Benn. If they do not pull the trigger for the Illinois star, look for them to plug some holes on the defensive side. A two gap, space eating nose tackle is the 'Fins primary need on defense. ILB is not that high of a priority, but if the talented McClain is still on the board, Bill Parcells will be hard pressed not to pick him. A superb run defender, McClain has underrated skills as a second level playmaker. With time, he should master that too. He is a budding star.

Miami needs to consider a WR with this pick. OLB is not an overly needed area. Still, Parcels values talent and skills over need. Bowman belongs in the first round, but his off the field issues pushed back his stock a bit.

Everyone’s talking wideout here, but there will be several solid options available in later rounds for that. Run-stopping defensive tackles, though, do not just show up on your doorstep. Dan Williams follows in the great tradition of the Tennessee DTs before him (Albert Haynesworth, Justin Harrell, Aubreyo Franklin) and could be the anchor of the Miami D-line for years to come. Ready to contribute immediately on all three downs, Kindle exhibited the ability to rush from two- and three-point stances at Texas, led the Longhorns in QB pressures last season, and was highly disruptive throughout his career. One of the big keys to any good 3-4 defense is an athletic outside linebacker who can rush the passer. Nobody knows this better than Bill Parcells, who has actually used first round picks on linebackers everywhere he has been, from Carl Banks with the Giants to Willie McGinest with the Patriots to James Farrior with the Jets to DeMarcus Ware with the Cowboys. So far The Tuna hasn’t taken a linebacker in round one during his tenure in Miami yet but history tells us that will eventually change. Jason Taylor is essentially running on fumes at this point and Joey Porter appears to be wearing out his welcome, which means it’s time to start thinking about the future. South Florida’s Jason Pierre-Paul only has one season of Division I experience after transferring in from the JUCO ranks but he wasted no time asserting himself as one of the country’s most feared pass rushers and a top pro prospect. An amazing athlete with rare burst and explosiveness, Pierre-Paul checks in at 6-6 and 260 pounds, has extremely long arms and reportedly runs a 4.6 forty. Although still very raw there is simply no denying Pierre-Paul’s natural talent and unlimited upside, which is why he could ultimately carry a grade similar to that of Aaron Maybin last year. Sergio Kindle of Texas could be another pass rushing possibility. Other options for Miami in round one could include an inside linebacker (Alabama’s Rolando McClain) or a wide receiver (Oklahoma State’s Dez Bryant). The Dolphins also need to bring in a replacement for 35-year-old nose tackle Jason Ferguson and Tennessee’s Dan Williams might not be as much of a reach here as some think.

Sergio Kindle is a very versatile defensive player. He can rush off the end or stand up and play linebacker. He is a similar player to Brian Orakpo who had a great rookie season for the Redskins last year. This draft pick for Miami will be between Kindle and DT Dan Williams. The signing of Carlos Dansby could lean towards taking Williams but I think they will go with Kindle because he can play multiple positions.

Dan Williams is the ideal nose tackle in a 3-4 defense. He would be a great selection in the 1st round for many 3-4 teams, including the Dolphins. Another thing to look for with Dan Williams... A team that has a franchised NT (49ers, Steelers, Patriots) could select Dan Williams and then trade the rights to their current NT because a long term deal can not be agreed to with him.

Rolando McClain is an impact player who willl start immediately for the Dolphins. McClain is already my preseason defensive rookie of the year. If you look through previous drafts, the top ILB drafted has for the most part turned out to be very, very good in the NFL.

Please spare me the email beginning with “Bill Parcells never drafts…” because you just never know. He definitely has an aversion to selecting receivers in the first round. However, they were led in touchdown receptions by rookie Brian Hartline. He had three. I like their complementary players at the position, but now that a pure passer (Henne) is in place how about giving him a stud #1? If not for a tumultuous, abbreviated senior season Bryant might be a top 5 pick and still could be. They can’t overlook the value if he tumbles to them. Most people believe Ginn’s days are numbered and he is replaced with a guy who will be highly productive from the jump.

The highest rated wide receiver in the draft falls to number 12. Parcells is not known to draft WR's in the first round, and he is known to not like problem or diva players, and Bryant is coming off a full season suspension. However, Dez Bryant is a truly exceptional player, and is too good to pass up on.

I've seen Dez Bryant mocked to the Dolphins, but I just can't imagine Bill Parcells spending a No. 1 pick on a wideout. It could happen, but except for one occasion (Terry Glenn, 1996), Parcells has always waited on taking receivers. And as e-mailer Eric K. reminded me, "Parcells only drafted Glenn in 1996 because owner Bob Kraft demanded it. Parcells was overruled at the draft by Kraft. The disagreement and its outcome was one of the prime reasons that Parcells was eager to jump from the Pats to the Jets after the '96 season."

(Note: If I get one more e-mail saying, "Your stupid, Parcels drafted Keshawn Johnson!" I'm going to debacle myself. Keyshawn was drafted in 1996. Parcells joined the Jets in 1997.)

Conversely, Parcells has spent a whopping six first-round selections on linebackers. Make it seven. Jason Pierre-Paul is a raw, one-year wonder with a high bust probability, but he also has a ridiculous upside. That, along with his impressive size (6-5, 270) and Combine workout (4.64 40) will coax Parcells into drafting the South Florida product.

The bottom line is that the Dolphins need to improve their pass rush. Joey Porter was cut, while Jason Taylor, a free agent, turns 36 on Sept. 1. Someone besides Cameron Wake needs to get to the quarterback. With inside linebacker no longer a need in the wake of the Karlos Dansby signing, Parcells will be targeting Pierre-Paul at No. 12.
