Since it has been forever since our beloved Fins have even sniffed at the playoffs this late in the season. Well, the last time the Dolphins finished in first place was an 11-5 finish in 2000. With a win the Dolphins will tie the Indianopolis Colts with the biggest turnaround in one season - 10 games.
This is the final week of the season and the Dolphins find themselves with a 10-5 record after going 1-15 the year before. Not only that but they actually are now in a first place tie with the New England Patriots, but we own the tie-breaker over the Patriots. We control our own destiny as a win over the Jets means that we will be the AFC East Champions. If the Dolphins were to lose, my guess is that the Patriots would win the AFC East then as I cannot imagine them losing to the Buffalo Bills. The Jets would then hold the tie-breaker over us for a wild card spot, but the Ravens would have to lose for the Jets to make the playoffs. That isn't going to happen this weekend either.
The Dolphins must beat the Jets on Sunday or the season is over. That makes tomorrow's game a playoff game for the Dolphins. Win and we continue to play ... lose and we are watching the other teams play. Our active and injured players must play (unless there is a chance of a career-ending injury). This is do or die ... and I am psyched. Our Dolphins have all ready accomplished more than anyone expected of them this year, and you have to happy for some of our leaders who endured last year's debacle ... such as DE/DT Vonnie Holiday.
Minnie Me? Winning One Game At A Time.
The mark of a Bill Parcells team is to win one game at at time. Before he came to Miami and Dallas, his teams would win games they were supposed to win and overachieve in games they were not supposed to win. This year the Dolphins have been winning ugly at times, but a win is a win. The key is to play each game just a little better than your opponent ... and not make mistakes.
Let's face it ... the reason why Parcells hired Tony Sparano as his head coach is because he knew that he was hiring a chip off the old block. Parcells meets with Sparano each week and they discuss the team and strategy. Sparano is learning a lot of things in these sessions but he is also making his own decisions as well. He's not a puppet or a "yes man". The efficiency that this team is showing comes from the head coach. They protect the ball and they do not make many stupid penalties. Special Teams is improving greatly. They are very disciplined, focused, and act as a "team".
Jets Fans Are Committing Suicide
If there ever were a group of fans who think they are going to the Super Bowl in the offseason and committing suicide in December due to unrealistic expectations it is Jets fans. A win over the Dolphins and a loss by the Patriots and Ravens will not make them happy as they will view it as backing into the playoffs. They know the season is really over because by game time they will know the Ravens will have won their game. I am hoping for this as the Jets are never an easy team for us to play. They could be 1-14 entering this game and come out on top. They just seem to get up for us.
Let's hope that Parcells and Sparano have changed this losing mentality in the Dolphins. Last week we showed the NFL that we can be a warm weathered team and still win in the cold. Last week's game was the coldest game the Dolphins have ever played in. Even though they beat the Chiefs do not forget that the Chiefs lost in the previous two weeks late in the 4th quarters to the Broncos and Chargers ... who had to sweat out wins by coming back in the 4th quarter against the Chiefs.
Just as Don Shula changed the mentality of the Dolphins into Super Bowl winners, Parcells and Co are doing the same thing in Miami.
So, let's put the noose around their fat necks by beating their butts in their home stadium.
