Is trading for Trent Green really such a bad idea?
I’m not so sure we can judge where Trent Green’s career is at based on his 2006 season. For starters, no one can stop an offense like Kansas City Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards. Although it is usually his own offense he winds up stopping. While Edwards was the coach of the New York Jets, his offensive teams were known for underachieving despite having players such as Curtis Martin, Santana Moss, and a healthy Chad Pennington before his arm became a pea shooter. There are many reasons for this, but Herm Edwards has to be at the top of those. The fact is that Trent Green is one season removed from a 90.1 QB rating, and 4014 passing yards with 17 TDs and 10 INTs. While these numbers are not spectacular, they are better than anything the Dolphins have had since Dan Marino. |

It seems like many "experts" have weighed in on the Joey Porter signing, and the reviews are not positive. Below are some comments I've heard about Porter with my rebuttal to each one.
"Porter had a down year in 2006."
Porter had 55 tackles, 7 sacks, and 2 interceptions in 2006. He averages about 58 tackles, 7.5 sacks, and 1 interception a year for his career. I fail to see where the drop off is. Additionally, what these "experts" fail to mention is that virtually every player in the NFL who is a pass rush specialist has "down" years. Sacks are stats that fluctuate from year to year. Just ask Dwight Freeney, who only managed 5.5 sacks in 2006 or Trevor Pryce, who had 13 sacks last season. The last time Trevor Pryce put up double digit sacks before 2006 was in 2000. |

This will certainly stir up some debate. The type of fired up debate that generally goes off topic and gets into the personal realm. What I am about to say will make some of you think I am a moron. There will be some of you that will see the logic behind it. Let's see what happens.
The Miami Dolphins have traded Dan Wilkinson for a 6th round pick. They just traded Wes Welker for a 2nd and a 7th. They started the offseason with a 1st, a 2nd, a 3rd, a 4th, a 6th and a 7th. They now have a 1st, two 2nds, a 3rd, a 4th, two 6ths and a 7th. Now that's ammo, baby! |

When columnists analyze team needs, they usually focus on personnel. But team needs go far beyond that. As a matter of fact, every team is built by the person choosing the players. Everything trickles down from the man in charge of, as Bill Parcells would say, shopping for groceries. So technically, the biggest need for every team, the most important person in the organization, is the general manager or director of personnel, whichever title you want to choose. |

More of the same.
More pass-happy playcalling.
More late game fades by the defense.
More abandoning the run.
More of not enough touches for Ronnie Brown.
More dropped passes.
More big plays allowed by the secondary. |

Preseason Game #1 - Jaguars 17, Dolphins 18 In the first preseason game of the Dolphins, the word of the day for the offense was sloppy. And that is to be expected for a team that has basically been practicing a new offensive system for only two weeks. It takes a lot longer than that to develop chemistry with your teammates and master a new system. The first team defense however, looked dominant. Here is my assessment of the different positions and how specific players did. |
