Post Reshad Jones a bright spot
Quote:
Dolphins SS Reshad Jones led the team with 14 tackles (11 solo) while making several key third-down stops at Buffalo in Week 11.
Pro Football Focus credits Jones with an incredible eight stops (any tackle that prevents a successful offensive play), doubling his season total. He also forced a pair of fumbles. Under new DC Kevin Coyle, Jones has flown under the radar as a Pro Bowl caliber player this season, excelling in coverage as well as run support.

Reshad Jones was playing out of his mind, along with Wake.

The rest of that D line didn't care to stop the run or keep Fits in the pocket.

That was the best game I've seen out of Jones. You can tell he's really acceling in the new system. Heck of a draft pick by Ireland. This kid is going to be a great player for us for a long time. I just wish we had a few more players like him in our secondary.

I hope this isn't the kiss of death, but Pro Football Focus has him kicking some serious hiney at the safety position. He's definitely a player to build the defense on.

He's a liability in man to man coverage, but he's playing center field pretty well, and he's extremely good against the run.

Nothing special, but I think he's starting caliber. Jones isn't the issue defensively.

We need a FS to replace Clemons who is consistently out of position. We also need a true shutdown corner to play across from Smith. We need Marshall to get healthy and play the nickel like he was supposed to when we picked him up. Carroll can play the dime. In my opinion we're two players away from being where we need to be.

I think we need to add two DBs in the draft, and let Marshall return to health. After that, we'll be much improved. We were making a lot of plays earlier in the season, but then injuries hit. This article is right, Jones has unfortunately been the lone bright spot. Smith was playing very well earlier in the year, but has regressed lately. Playing off the line clearly isn't his game. He's a press guy that will need lots of help over the top. He's not a shut down corner. But now that we know that, we can gameplan around that. But we do need someone across from him.

Our problem right now is that due to Davis being traded and Marshall being hurt, we've got a bunch of young guys playing in big spots they probably shouldn't be. We were thin at the position going into the season, but now we're completely depleted. I think adding a couple of young guys plus getting Marshall back will give us the required depth and skill to do what we want and stop getting beat deep.

I wonder how PFF rates the safety position accurately. When a corner gets beat there are times when the safety should be there helping in coverage. I'll take their word for it, I guess.
