Sherman pledges to get Charles Clay more involved in offense
But can he catch the ball? Quote: Sherman has also pledged to get H-back Charles Clay move involved in the offense as a seam threat.
"Charles Clay is someone who could really help us down the stretch as we continue after the bye and beyond," Sherman said on Monday. "I would like to see Charles Clay step up and be a factor in what we do.” http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miam ... l+Blogs%29

Sometimes. And has made some good ones... Also has missed some easy ones... Getting him more involved will surely give us an idea if he lacks ability or just consistency.

The guy seems to have a knack for getting open, but his hands have been inconsistent. If he and Tannehill can get on the same page Clay could be one heck of a weapon.

It's not just his hands that are inconsistent .... it's his head.

What's odd is the regression from last season. Needs to step it up. He gets open and is a great athlete, but dang he's gotta hold on to Tanny's passes.

He was drafted because he fit a different style of offense. Ireland drafted him for Sparano, not Philbin. So if he looks a little out of place it's likely because of that. But that doesn't mean he can't eventually carve out his own little spot on the roster. He just needs to find his niche.

Afterall he wasn't drafted for this offense, he was drafted for Sparano, not Philbin. It's hard to tell if he's just not going to be a fit or if he just needs time to adjust. Hopefully it's the latter.

Thats good to hear from Sherman. I believe this is what it'll take, a coach who's willing to recognize Clay's talent & work with him. Clay has a unique skill set & good coaches find a way to highlight those.
I personally enjoy it when the J-train gets a pass in the flat but only when its a short yardage situation cuz he has 1 gear & 1 move; plow. So tossing it out to Clay from the backfield would be just 1 way to make our team a bit more dynamic

Re: Sherman pledges to get Charles Clay more involved in offense

wkloiber13, Charles Clay has been terribly inconsistent for the Dolphins. In fact, for a guy coming out of Tulsa that was such a great utility player and someone that you can count on to make big plays and move the chains and the reason Ireland drafted him, has really been disappointing so far.
I think Sherman has already tried to get this kid the ball on a number of occasions and he looks great getting open, then flat out drops the ball and some have been very critical drops.
Rock is right, hands are not only inconsistent, but something in his head mentally, he is struggling.
When players are wide open and drop it, I have little sympathy for that as most these guys have been playing the game since they were 8 years old. Catch the darn ball and you will be included more in the offense as he can no doubt help this team if he can live up to his potential.
Heck, I think he can become another Cooley, the former Washington stud.

I'm being hard on him for acknowledging a criticism even his own offensive coordinator made about him? Just curious though, when can we actually apply criticism to a player? Are we only allowed to sing praise when they do well, even if that's premature as well?

I guess Clay just isn't getting it.
