It's unclear whether he's signed as a nickel CB or a safety.

He announced it on his twitter page. https://twitter.com/#!/TheMarshall31

Man....16 million a year aint to be a nickel CB. He starts at safety, I think.

Glass half empty much? The Phins got at least their nickle back, who, if you hadn't noticed, was not currently on our roster by most estimations. Or in best case scenario, he's ready to step into a role pushing Smith as a starter. Either way it's progress. One less "need" for the draft.

During his six NFL seasons (one in Arizona), Marshall intercepted 17 passes, had seven sacks while forcing three fumbles and recorded 500 tackles (434 solo). The former Fresno State star, who was selected in the second round (58th overall) by the Carolina Panthers in 2006, exceeded 80 tackles four times and finished with 78 (69 solo) last season. Marshall has recorded three or more interceptions in five of his six NFL seasons.

The NFL Network voted a play by Marshall as the "Number 1 play of the 2008 pre-season". The play involved Marshall intercepting a fake field goal flick from the holder to the kicker and running it back for a touchdown.

Miami has wasted lower Rd draft picks on safety, might as well try FA.

Only $6 million is guaranteed btw.

Curious to see where they play this guy. Tough all-around, but gets burned by speed guys.

Who pays 6 million guaranteed to a nickel corner and/or guy that "may" be a starter. Especially when we have 1. no pass rusher opposite Wake, 2. No right side of the offensive line, 3. 1 receiver, 4. No quarterback.

Nickel corner could have been had in the draft. And if we were going after one, Marshall was my last choice. This guy is getting burnt every time I watch him. This could be worse than Wilson or Sapp.

Sounds like he'll be a safety in base defense, and move into the slot as a CB in the nickel.

It was a huge need for Miami. If he pans out, it's a great deal for Miami.

Well hopefully theres still time for that. Its only been 30 hours & he was here for the job first.

You are right about one thing. Pass rush should be a priority, seeing how that makes secondaries better.

OT; Why the heck would Mario Williams or anybody want to play in Buffalo any way? lol (please don't be That Guy & answer this)

No offense, but the fact that you haven't heard of him doesn't mean he can't play. I have, and he's an upgrade to anything we have on the roster, a veteran who's been there and done that and has some position versatility. I like the signing. We'll see if Ireland or Iowa turns out better informed.

They must be looking at him as the starting FS. Then get a pass rusher in the draft. That would set up the defense pretty nicely.

It's the offense that needs serious work (this is a recording)

Had no idea new Dolphins nickel corner Richard Marshall was as solid as he seems to be, per Pro Football Focus. Ranked 29th out of 109 qualifying corners last year in pass coverage, 52nd overall.

Yea, they bring in an offensive minded coach & so far they have traded their best offensive players & sign a CB/S & resigned a DT.

Plus no TE help. The draft is going to be all offense except for maybe the No. 8 pick which is probably going to be pass rusher

Also from Berardino:

Quote:
Pro Football Focus ranked Antonio Cromartie 30th in the league in coverage for corners. Charles Woodson was 31st. Leon Hall, top corner for new Dolphins DC Kevin Coyle last year in Cincy, ranked 34th, while Vontae Davis was 39th in coverage.

and...

Quote:
Or to put it another way, the Cowboys just gave a five-year, $50.1 million deal to ex-Chiefs CB Brandon Carr, who ranked 21st in the league vs. pass (per PFF). Richard Marshall, who ranked 29th, just signed with Dolphins for three years and $16 million ($6 million guaranteed). Solid value, right?

With all his tackles, surely he must have spent most of his time at safety, not corner

Hmmm....now if we sign Flynn and Winston, the draft targets look to be a pass rusher and WR. No Flynn means we reach on Tannehill. Maybe we actually move up to snag Blackmon??

With resigning Soliai and shoring up the secondary, this defense is set to get better.

Let's see what happens with Langford.

A lot of work left to do on offense, though.

It's only the 3rd day in free agency... and the draft is just a little over a month away.

No need to go into panic mode already.

This is a solid signing at a hidden need.

I'm excited with the moves that we are making to our defense. I am wondering if this signing makes Sean Smith's role change with the team. It seems there is a plan in place here defensively.

It looks like the deal with the Dolphins was a little too rich for the Cardinals. They took a nice step forward last year in pass defense only to lose a big piece of their puzzle. My guess is they'll try to replace him through the draft or find a cheaper option.

Quote:
Newly signed Dolphins DB Richard Marshall says he gave the Cardinals a chance to match Miami's three-year, $16 million offer.

Marshall says he even went as far to call the Cardinals himself, but they declined. Capable of playing almost anywhere in the secondary, Marshall is a big loss for a team that sported an improved pass defense in 2011.

From what everyone is posting and I am reading, he seems like he'll be a good fit. I'm not familiar with the guy either, but from the improvement on AZ pass defence in 11, I'd say he helped a little bit at least and we need all the help we can get on pass D!! I'll take it! Goodbye BMarsh, welcome RMarsh!!
