Sources: Pennington talks hit snag (official: signs 1 yr co)
Quote: By Chris Mortensen ESPN.com Archive The anticipated re-signing of Chad Pennington with the Miami Dolphins has been snagged by the veteran quarterback's desire to have a no-trade clause in his contract, according to team and league sources.
Pennington and the Dolphins were expected to reach an agreement on a one-year $2.5 million contract on Thursday afternoon before the stumbling no-trade block, according to another team interested in the quarterback.
Pennington, who is recovering well from his third shoulder surgery, has willingly agreed to serve as Miami's No 3 quarterback, mentoring Chad Henne and Tyler Thigpen, as well as Pat White, whose role seems unclear for 2010. Henne is the starter but the team is very impressed with Thigpen, hoping he can reduce his turnovers. White was used on a limited basis in some Wildcat and option plays.
However, because Pennington has a young family he does not want to move this year, he was holding out for assurances he would not be traded. The Dolphins refused to limit their "business options" on a potential trade, sources said.
Pennington was still exploring other possibilities, among them his former team, the Jets, as well as the Rams and the Redskins.
Chris Mortensen is a senior NFL anlyst for ESPN.

Re: Sources: Pennington talks hit snag
If Pennington is carrying a clip board all season & a team wants to offer something for him via a trade because of a QB injury why not trade him? I could see the FO waivering on that clause. Like I said in another thread , Pennington is a great team guy but in all honesty he takes a speeding offense & makes it coast.

The only thing about the whole Pennington thing is that it looks like we'll trade Thigpen. Unless it is better than what we traded for him, why go backwards? Thigpen is a very good #2 and could operate the Wild Cat.

I think they want to have Penny and Thigpen under contract, so when a team needs a QB, we got 2 ready to go, one young one old, take your pick. It could work out great for us.

Re: Sources: Pennington talks hit snag
You open up an a Pandora Box when you offer a no trade clasue, as other players will seek the same thing.
I understand why Chad wants it as he wants to keep his family in Miami, but I understand what Miami is doing also.

I just do not have the patience for this. I know it's unrealistic, but I wish they would just tell us what's going on with CP, Ronnie and the rest.

Quote: The two sides have reached an agreement in which Pennington will receive a one-year contract for $2.5 million but allow for another $1.515 million if he is traded, according to sources. A team interested in Pennington confirmed that it was informed of Pennington's renewed commitment to the Dolphins. Good deal for Chad. Well, the QB depth chart is full. Can Pat White do something else? I still think Thigpen has more upside at QB, than White. Which in turn will make him a better option in a trade.

Re: Sources: Pennington talks hit snag (signs)
I agree with that. They have to find some use for a 2nd round pick, will they list him at rb or wr to get him in the wildcat packages? Or they can pretty much put him on any position right just not qb..

From starter (Henne) to emergency QB (White) the Dolphins may have the best collection of QBs next year.

Also, don't discount moving White to Wr & keeping Thigpen.

Re: Sources: Pennington talks hit snag (official: signs 1 yr co)
If we trade Thigpen we have no back up if Henne goes down that can take us into the post season. Yes Pennington is a great team guy .. like I said Rah Rah & all that stuff but he is what he is & now with another shoulder surgery ... 7 yard patterns & folly floating deep balls. The fact that Miami would not consent to a zero tolerance no trade clause tells me that they will move him ... good move.

Some team may need a Qb into the season. They did give him another 1.5 million if he was traded. So that gives him protection from being signed & traded. As for Thigpen. What has he ever done that makes you believe he can lead Miami into the playoffs? Especially after watching Thigpen imploded in that last game.

Re: Sources: Pennington talks hit snag (official: signs 1 yr co)
D4Me .. I am not sold that Thigpen can lead us into the playoffs as well , like Henne so many unknowns & lack of experience. So you are correct there. But even with his experience I am just as sold as well that Pennington would not fare well either. With a QB likie him (CP) you need a super running game , recieving game , & defense. All the things to make up for the lack of the QB presence. I just dont think we are there. What I am hoping for is for Henne to stay healthy , play well enough that there is NO QB controversy & then after the season have the FO evaluate him & make the proper decisions.

I don't think Pennington needs all that as his intelligence spreads the offfense around. What he does need is a good OL which we do have. Unfortunately his lack of arm strength shrinks the field. I wonder how strong that arm is now after yet another injury to his throwing shoulder. I am sure that he's been evaluated, but I feel uneasy about that.

Does this mean White to receiver?

I would not be shocked at all if Pat White was moved to wide out.

Re: Sources: Pennington talks hit snag (official: signs 1 yr co)
I like it. I like it. Penny there to mentor Henne = Perfect. The idea of White as a wideout is awesome & he'll moosh right in exactly with our group of, just above average athletes, wide receivers
Heres what intrigues me; this no trade hiccup means that both sides had the wheels turning. I don't think we'll see Pennington throw 4 or 5 weeks into the season ( so his value sustains despite the questionable shoulder) when we trade him. He'll be there for Henne past the beginning, something will happen to another team, they'll become desperate, & we won't mind giving that 1.5 to get a deal.
Otherwise, lets hope KC decides Cassell is a lost cause & they want Thigpen back even if they have to give up Bowe. Thats so ridiculous that I couldn't finish typing the sentence before I laughed out loud
