Scouts Inc: Ranking the AFC East secondaries
Quote: Ranking the AFC East secondaries By Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson
1. New York Jets 2. New England Patriots 3. Buffalo Bills
4. Miami Dolphins
Vontae Davis and Sean Smith get a lot of ink as the Dolphins’ starting rookie cornerbacks. Smith began the season strong, but his unusual body type and struggles flipping his hips always might hold him back. To me, he finished the season as a somewhat overrated player.
But Davis could be on the verge of stardom. Like Smith, he made some rookie mistakes, but this kid has it all physically. He will be a true No. 1 cover man -- maybe as soon as next season. Third cornerback Will Allen is serviceable, but not dynamic.
Gibril Wilson and Yeremiah Bell are both average starting caliber strong safeties. But the problem in Miami is that neither has the skill set for deep patrol. The lack of a true free safety-type hurt this pass defense and is a clear offseason need. http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/ ... econdaries

I don't think this is a great assessment safety-wise. Bell is an above-average SS in my opinion and Wilson is just aweful, below-avg. Putting those two in the same category is a bit alarming to take this guy seriously.
But I wouldn't rank Miami any higher than third, though.

Stats in the afc east really dont matter. The Patriot domination seems to be over & with that once again every game is a dog fight no matter what. Look at our games last season ... we split with the Bills & Patriots & swept the jets but really most of those games could have gone either way & although I have no "stats" in front of me I am sure for the most part it holds true on the games between the Bills , Jets & Patriots. You just know that when you face a divisional opponent in the afc east (& other divisions as well) you are in for a tough game that usually gets decided in the 4th quarter.

Re: Scouts Inc: Ranking the AFC East secondaries
I think ranking 4 teams secondaries when there are so many variables (player and coaching changes) is just something to do in the offseason so we all have something to talk about.
My opinion? That could be a somewhat accurate ranking based on last season, but I think the season is over and we have to look at 2010. It is going to be very hard to predict at this point how any team will do. I expect to see Sean Smith and Will "Is There A Problem Officer" Allen starting at corner this year and a LOT of improvement. Vontae will keep them both on their toes waiting to take over a starting job.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Phins Rock wrote: How can we rank below NE?? Um, because we gave up more deep passes than any other team in the NFL maybe? The Patriots were ranked 12th in pass defense. We were ranked 24th. The Patriots were ranked 13th in QB rating. We were ranked 19th. The Patriots were ranked 12th in plays over 20 yards. We were ranked 30th. The Patriots were ranked 5th in plays over 40 yards. We were ranked DEAD LAST. How can we NOT be ranked below NE?
