Post Miami Dolphins: Could Randy Starks be an upgrade?
Quote:
A week into this Miami Dolphins training camp, one message keeps coming through loud and clear on the defensive side of the ball: Randy Starks is a beast.

...

Is it possible, someone asked, that the Dolphins might actually be looking at an upgrade at the nose tackle position, even in light of the retirement of one of the finer modern-day noses in Jason Ferguson?

“I would say I feel that way, yeah,” Sparano said. “I would feel we have a chance to upgrade. You know my feeling on Ferguson and people like that, so this isn’t slighting Jason. From a productivity standpoint, getting production out of that nose, when you’re sliding protections or when you’re doing those kind of things, getting production in the pass rush in base, you talk about having a perk.

“That alone I think upgrades you a little bit.

In passing drills in camp, yeah, he's going to look better. But when it comes time for guards to blow past the NT and put a body on Dansby and Crowder we might see a the deficit. I want nose tackles who free up linebackers and clog gaps. I've never seen Randy Starks do that.

If you're NT is too athletic and getting too much penetration for a center to handle, then they'll be forced to double team him. He should be strong enough to hold the point, but, we'll see.

Jay Ratliff in Dallas has turned out to be a pretty darn good experiment...
