Post Re: Dolphins to pursue OJ Atogwe
The Herald reporting that they will indeed go after him. Maybe this is why they cut Reggie Torbor so early?

Quote:
June 1st is approaching and everyone is expecting a decision from the St. Louis Rams on what to do with free safety O.J. Atogwe. As the Herald first reported months ago, Atogwe will become a free agent unless the Rams sign him to a long-term contract, offer him a one-year tender at 110 percent of his 2009 salary (it was $6.3 million so the tender would be $6,993,000), or trade him.

I cannot see the Rams simply letting Atogwe go without getting something for him. That would be personnel malpractice. If a trade is in the works, Atogwe will sign his tender no later than Monday and then be dealt. Atogwe will not sign his current tender and stay with St. Louis.

Will the Dolphins be interested? Again, as The Herald reported months ago, Miami will be a player if Atogwe is out there.

The question is to what degree?

The Dolphins set a budget for what they believed two free safeties were worth this offseason when they chased Antrel Rolle and Ryan Clark. They landed neither. I believe the Dolphins will set a price for Atogwe internally and if they can get him for that, then so be it.

PFT has the details & nuances
It appears June 1 = end of day Midnight on June 1
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/20 ... er-offers/

... even includes all the Atogwe details, QUOTED here.
"June 1 has relevance to the process because, technically, the tenders must be re-issued on that date. That exercise becomes particularly relevant to Rams safety O.J. Atogwe.

Atogwe was a franchise player in 2009. To avoid a requirement that he be tendered an offer worth at least 110 percent of his franchise-player salary from last season, the Rams tendered him at the lowest possible level, which gave them only a right to match any other offer he received. As of June 1, the re-issued tender must be the greater of the previous tender or 110 percent of the prior year's salary. Thus, in order to retain exclusive rights to Atogwe, the Rams will have to increase Atogwe's take from a non-guaranteed offer of $1.226 million to a guaranteed (if signed) tender worth nearly $7 million.

According to NFLLabor.com, Atogwe and 36 other restricted free agents have not officially signed their tender offers (one of them, Cowboys safety Gerald Sensabaugh) reportedly has accepted his. Most of them likely will be re-issued a tender on June 1. It's unlikely that the Rams will do so with Atogwe. If they don't, he'll be free to sign with any other team.

The next key date comes on June 15, when the tender can be reduced to 110 percent of the player's 2009 salary, a development that would dramatically reduce the 2010 salaries for some of the unsigned restricted free agents."

Jeff Darlington tweeted that the Dolphins like what they have seen from Clemons and that making a move for Atogwe would be a longshot.

Adam Schefter says that the Vikings and Dolphins have "some level of interest in Atogwe as well", as do the Rams in resigning him for a lesser salary of nearly 7mil. Golic and Bruschi were saying yesterday on NFL live that they doubt he will get anywhere close to 7mil. The guy sure does make plays though. In 72 career games with the porous Rams D, he has accumulated 19 INT's and 14 FF's, which isn't too bad at all. Schefter, Golic and Bruschi kept referring to him as a ballhawking safety who attacks the ball and makes plays even though he isn't the biggest guy out there. I duno how his coverage skills are, but the INT and FF numbers aren't too bad. He is definitely an upgrade over our current FS's though imo.

Aren't too bad!? Lol. He creates more turnovers then any other safety in the league.

? In the past 4 years anyway. He and Reed both have 29 total created turnovers in the past 4 years..

Tied for the most turnovers in the past 4 years.. with Ed Fricken Reed. I think it makes my point that this guy is the best in the league at Safety when it comes to turnovers. He and Reed that is. He and Reed both played the exact same amount of games during that 4 year time period. If you have a Safety who can get the ball as much as Ed Reed. You are saying something pretty special about a guy.

And that my friend. Is much better then "Not to bad." So.. yeah.

Clemons has to step up this year. It's his job.

I believe that he will. 2 huge question marks going into the season are Can Randy Starks play the nose? and Can Miami generate a consistent pass rush?
