The Miami Herald reports Dolphins OG/C Joe Berger worked with the first team at center Wednesday. HC Tony Sparano declared that job up for grabs between Berger and C Jake Grove, signed as a free agent during the 2009 offseason.

I wouldn't be so quick to write off Berger. Sparano has been grooming this guy for a while and if the difference in talent between him and Grove is minimal, I wouldn't be surprised if Grove is gone.

Here's some more info on this ...

Omar Kelly wrote:
The Dolphins must not like what they’re seeing from Jake Grove, last year’s big free agent addition, because they have him sharing the starting center spot with Joe Berger.

“That’s the way we do it here. There’s always pressure to perform,” Grove said. “That’s good. It makes you better.”

I personally did not see a huge improvement in the run game between the tackles out of conventional sets from Satele to Grove...

I agree. I was excited when they brought him in, but I didn't see a marked difference in the run-blocking (I thought this was his strength). He wasn't terrible, but he was overpaid IMO.

I thought Berger did "well", but it was clear that the Dolphins ran the ball better behind Grove. Even Pro Football Focus rated Grove better. In fact, Grove was rated the 5th best center in the NFL last year.

What Parcells doesn't like are the penalties and injury issues that Grove has ... but it's not like they didn't know this. He had the same issues at Oakland.

Dave, they also had him ranked number 2 before he got hurt.

Also remember though that Berger got most of his playing time with Ricky and Lex, while Grove was blocking for Ronnie. I think Berger did a very good job of stepping in, but I don't think there's much of a debate as to who is the better center. Grove was a beast in there, while Berger is more of a pass blocking depth guy.

I think this move could be to motivate Grove to do all he can to try and remain healthy, otherwise he can be replaced.......as Smiley learned this offseason........or could be that they really like Berger and want to give him a shot at the starting job?

Helps make the offseason more interesting.......I do think Jake was the better C when healthy though, but Joe did fine too.

Just goes to show that while stats are useful, they can be misleading.

The fact of the matter is the Dolphins had better success running to the outside or out of the Wildcat than pounding the ball between the tackles.

Perhaps it was the lack of a deep passing game that allowed defenses to play 8 in the box, but the best run blocking lines get it done against 8 man fronts and up the gut.

That is really interesting stuff! It is a nice problem to have the number 5 and the number 12 center in all of football pushing one another for a starting spot.

Berger may also have an advantage because a knock on Grove has been that he is injury prone.
