Post Alex Marvez: Dolphins post-draft needs
No surprise.

Quote:
Miami:

Tight end/free safety - The Dolphins haven’t had a legitimate receiving threat at tight end since the departed Randy McMichael in 2006. They probably won’t have one this season, either, after drafting only one offensive player (guard John Jerry). Miami flopped when trying to sign Pittsburgh safety Ryan Clark on the cheap in free agency. Last season’s fifth-round draft choice Chris Clemons, a backup last year behind the released Gibril Wilson, would start alongside Yeremiah Bell if the season began today.

David Martin is fully recovered and still available. Just throwing that out there...

1. He was a rookie.
2. He did the last however many games.
3. The free safety looked awful more times than not because of Pasqualoni's play calling.

TE is considered a weakness, but the offense this season will probably rely less on receiving from that position and more on blocking.......with that I think Fasano will do a good enough job there..... :yay:

FS is an unknown right now........if the starter for that position is currently on the roster, then there will be some growing pains as the guys on the roster have less than half a season of starts between Clemons, Culver, and Jones.

First, if the starter isn't already on the roster, would some other team's safety start for Miami? Second, there should be no growing pains if the coordinator puts him in a position to make plays.

Didn't realize. I think he would be a good pick up. He disapointed big time in 2007, (who didn't?), but came back and was terrific in 08.

Not sure how the relationship is between him and the front office is though?

Miami cut him in December. No chance they pick him back up. If they wanted him they would have just kept him

He was out for the season on the last year of a contract.

There was a report a couple of days ago that he was an option the front office was considering. It didn't get much attention but I think he is the best receiving tight end we've had since maybe McMichael.

Nope, they did. Dec 8 or 9th if I remember correctly. I find it almost impossbile that they would cut him off a non-roster spot that late in the season only to bring him back a few months later.

It was September of 09.

Here's a surprising move that is breaking now as we speak. It's being reported by Scout.com and the Sun-Sentinel that the Dolphins have reached an injury settlement with TE David Martin and will release him. This obviously is a major explanation as to why the Dolphins were so intent on keeping both Joey Haynos and John Nalbone on their 53 man roster.

The settlement doesn't stem from his sports hernia surgery, though. It's being reported that he's actually having knee problems.

No, no...incorrect there Rich. Miami placed him on Injured Reserve in Sep. But they CUT him on Dec 8th.

Interesting because I find several sites saying he was dropped in September.

Dolphins drop David Martin
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 6, 2009 6:45 PM ET
Tight end David Martin was good enough to start 22 games for the Dolphins over the last two years, gaining a career high 450 yards for the team in 2008.

But you can't make the club in the tub, so the Dolphins cut ties with him Sunday. They are working to reach an injury settlement with the former Packer, who came to South Florida with expectations to break out as a receiving option. He was struggling with a knee injury.

Dolphins waive TE David Martin, claim Davon Drew

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) - The Miami Dolphins have waived tight end David Martin and claimed Davon Drew off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens to replace him.

The Dolphins made the announcement Monday.
Drew was selected in the fifth round by the Ravens this year. The former East Carolina star was battling an ankle injury late in training camp and will be the fourth tight end on Miami's roster.

Martin had 31 catches for 450 yards and three touchdowns last season for Miami.

The Dolphins also finalized their practice squad Monday, which includes: defensive end Ryan Baker, cornerback Will Billingsley, linebackers J.D. Folsom and Danny Lansanah, offensive linemen Nate Garner and Mark Lewis, and receivers James Robinson and Julius Pruitt.

It's a moot point. He didn't play for them in 2009 and it was because of an injury, not performance based. In 2008, he was easily our best downfield threat.

Obviously he wasn't cut in September and those reports are wrong.

He wasn't officially released and on the open market till December.

If David Martin is gone then I'm not going to

I'm more interested to see what guys like Sperry and Nalbone can do this year. I really liked what I saw in Sperry in the little time he was on the field last season.

Like Sheets, Sperry was just a guy that saw some action due to injuries and nothing more.

And as I said, it is a moot point. He didn't play for them at all in 2009 and was not let go because of performance-based issues, but rather reoccuring injuries.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him get consideration (and reportedly he has) at the tight end position if he is available and at 100%.

Martin had surgery on his knee in Sept. He was healthy in Dec. Miami could have resigned anytime since, had they wanted too.

From NFL.com transaction list

9/7 David Martin Placed on IR (right knee).
Danny Lansanah practice squad addition.
J.D. Folsom practice squad addition.
Julius Pruitt practice squad addition.
James Robinson practice squad addition.
Mark Lewis practice squad addition.
Davon Drew acquired from waivers.
Ryan Baker practice squad addition.
Will Billingsley practice squad addition.
Nate Garner practice squad addition.

12/8 David Martin cut.
David Martin Taken off IR (right knee).

He was taken off IR as part of an injury settlement and waiver. Not because he was healthy.

what do you have against Kory Sheets? The Trifecta thought enough of him to snatch him off the 49ers practice squad, and by the reaction of their fans they weren't happy to lose him at all. I think he will challenge Cobbs for some snaps this year especially since Cobbs is coming off that knee injury.

Nothing against him. So because the "trifecta" brought him in makes him a good player? He was signed because Cobbs got injured and activated because Brown got injured. He's decent, but nothing explosive or majestic and nothing that's not already on the roster. Same with Sperry.

G.Wilson started because of his salary. Much like T.Ginn did because when he was drafted.

FS for the Dolpins it is open now between four young DBs, and of these, only the best player will start as they are all "later rounds" drafted players (except for Culver).

We could have seven new players or at new positions on defense not counting S.Smith and V.Davis at the corner spots. Four new linebackers (two drafted, one FA and a traded for player) and a "All Pro" defensive end moved to nose tackle. A new defensive end from the draft and a new FS.

And, in 2008 at least, was better than McMike ever really was.

Yeah, but he definitely flashed some talent when he did play. I think the one game he actually lined up and played on offense was against Tampa Bay. He had 3 catches for 31 yards and a touchdown in that game. To me it sounds like he could be a good target for Henne if given the chance.
Also if you could indulge me Iowafin, I'm not trying to call you out, but who got injured that led to Sperry getting on the field? I can't recall any of our TEs going down with injuries last year, maybe I just forgot about it?

Doh!

Quote:
Dolphins sign TE David Martin

DAVIE, Fla. -- Tight end David Martin rejoined the Miami Dolphins on Friday after missing last season because of a knee injury.

Martin signed as a free agent and took part in the afternoon practice. He reinforces a position where starter Anthony Fasano had only 31 catches for 331 yards and two touchdowns last season.

In 2008, Martin had similar statistics -- 31 catches for 450 yards and three touchdowns -- while sharing time with Fasano.

Martin was placed on season-ending injured reserve following knee surgery last September, and he was waived in December. He said he was at home in Tennessee and not attracting much attention from NFL teams until the Dolphins called Wednesday.

"I'm feeling great," he said. "My biggest thing now is doing what I can do to hopefully make this team and help this team win."
