Does this front office REALLY believe the offensive line is a better unit without Justin Smiley, whom they failed to trade during the draft, and are considering releasing? And if he’s banished, who will replace Smiley (Nate Garner, John Jerry, or Donald Thomas) as the team’s starting left guard?

The Fins shopped Smiley throughout the draft, but couldn't even use him as a trade throw-in. The addition of third-round pick John Jerry may have sealed Smiley's fate, though we'd think his $2.9 million salary isn't too much to pay an effective, experienced backup. Smiley was not a major liability in '09.

I can see trying to trade him but releasing him makes no sense especially in an uncapped year.

It's not just the $2.9 million. It is an opportunity to unload another big salary in an uncapped year so if/when the cap returns you don't have that salary on the books.

Of course it makes sense in an uncapped year.

Why do you think the Dolphins didn't hesitate in releasing Porter and Wilson? Because they can afford to take the dead cap hit in an uncapped year.

Whether it makes sense from a talent perspective is a whole other story.

Can you explain what you mean by "dead cap hit"?

You sign a player to a 5 year deal with a $10 million signing bonus. The bonus gets amortized over the 5 years. That's a cap hit of $2 million a year.

But if you release him after year two, you get an accelerated hit of $6 million. 3 remaining years times $2 million in amortized bonus. That $6 million counts towards the cap.

That's why unloading big contracts is best done in an uncapped year.

You can't bring him back now. Not the way they treated him, would be too akward

I don't see why not. If we can't trade him, why not wait and see how he performs in the preseason. If he wins back the starting LG position, then no harm no foul.

The question is will he want to compete for a team he knows aren't 100% behind him.

I agree. You don't release somebody just because the relationship between that player and the organization is "akward."

Can't bring him back. You can't tell him NOT TO SHOW UP for offseason workouts, then in July go, OK show up now. It's unfair to the player and its unfair to his teammates.

He is either part of the team or he isn't. There is no half-way

I just think the way the FO has been handling the vet's we have has been messed up. If JT was here it would be same strange thing. He would be like why should I play for a team that didn't want me, same with Smiley. I say at this point let him go and see if a team doesn't pick him up then we see if he wants to come back.

If Justin Smiley was cut he would be picked up in less than 48 hours

I have heard some of the same sentiments from players, who are peeved at the organization. There is a point where tough business becomes bad business. I know that the treatment of Justin Smiley (who is still waiting on a trade) has some soon-to-be-former teammates infuriated. If word gets around that this is an unfriendly organization, it can become harder to attract players.

Um, sorry, that's not today's NFL. They tried to trade him, got nowhere. If they decide they're better off with him than without, they absolutely will tell him to show up and play hard. He's under contract. That said, I wonder why they're hanging on this long if they don't intend to keep him for the season.

Incognito has already been brought in to replace Smiley and Jerry was drafted to compete for the RG slot. I think we'll be just fine up front, in fact I think we'll actually be better than we were at the beginning of last season. Smiley is a solid veteran, but Incognito has every bit as much talent as Smiley does. In fact, Incognito has Pro Bowl potential if he can stay healthy and out of trouble. I'm fine with us releasing Smiley, he's too expensive and too injury prone. I'm sure he's a great guy and all but it's time for the Dolphins to go in another direction.

Couldn't disagree more. You can't tell the guy to stay him for all offseason workouts then have him show up in July. You can't tell the guy we are trying to trade you then say, ah nobody wanted ya so come back.

Plus a main part of this trying to move him is NOT wanting to pay him. This is the one perk of an uncapped year!! Lose all bad contracts. Smiley has an awful one. When his roster bonus is due they will cut him lose so they don't have to pay him. THERE IS NO CHANCE SMILEY COMES BACK TO MIAMI!
