Post Philbin said he expects Jordan to "make a big jump" in 2014
Quote:
Coach Joe Philbin said he expects second-year DE Dion Jordan to "make a big jump" in 2014.
"We expect his role to expand," Philbin said. "He played [339] snaps. We definitely want to see that increase. The most natural place is on third down." The Dolphins also want to get DE Derrick Shelby more playing time after his impressive 2013. If the Dolphins only see Jordan as a defensive end, it's going to be hard to get him more snaps behind Shelby and starters Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon. We can't rule out a Jordan trade ahead of May's draft.

I still have no idea why they won't try to let him replace Wheeler at LB. Blitzing the QB and pass coverage seem to be two of his best attributes. He can still put his hand on the dirt in 3rd down speed packages if need be.

I agree Dave, he is not getting traded.

Trade or no trade, would Philbin say anything other than that? LOL

Since he had a limited training camp, I can understand not playing him at OLB last year. Also, Jordan sees himself as a DE...............but the best short term option for the Phins is for Jordan to improve against the run, and have flexibility to play him at OLB & DE.

I'm not sure who wrote the article for the Herald, but it seems like they missed the point. Unless the Phin's see Jordan as a total bust, they are not going to take the cap hit to trade him. Philbin's comments don't support the "total bust theory".

Philbin - Gosh I really hated this pick. Lane Johnson should be a Dolphin right now but Jeff was pissed off that we started going away from a 3-4. He doesn't know how to draft d-linemen and linebackers for anything other than a 3-4. So he stuck us with a 3-4 linebacker. Man, I hate that guy....

Jordan can have a big impact if he gets his weight together and is able to be more physical to stop the run. I think that was his biggest issue and if he can figure that out he can be a big impact guy especially on 3rd down as a cover man and pass rusher

Bluffing? Talk him up to make some other team believe you believe in him.

Would not be surprised to see him traded for a late 2nd & a conditional pick in 2015.

Why would they do that exactly?

Somewhere I read in Philbin's comments that Jordan didn't deserve more snaps than Shelby. Not because Jordan did anything wrong, but that Shelby basically just deserved it more. I just cannot find the actual comments. I think it is on my twitter somewhere from a Miami beat reporter.

I think Vernon and Shelby are good, but does anyone else in this forum see the explosive Von Miller like edge speed that Jordan seems to possess?? Or am I over doing that assessment?

Thoughts???

I think he meant that as far as stopping the run which was our biggest issue last season and with our struggles the defense couldnt set the tone and play whoever they wanted to to just easily dominate

I'd be willing to bet Chip Kelly would give up this year's 1st rounder plus more to get him. And even that would not be enough in my opinion.

In his limited snaps he made impact plays.

What trade him? Because they have no use for him. I'm not saying they should, I'm just saying do not be surprised if he is traded for far less than Ireland invested in him.

You guys forget. Hickey has no responsibility to keep him. He did not bring him in, so it does not have to answer as to why that got rid of him. When Ireland left so did the responsibility of needing to keep him around. It does not matter to Hickey that Miami spent the No. 3 pick on the guy. He was in Tampa when that went down.

It's on now! Philben said so! Why not come out and say we drafted a bust, in fact our entire draft last year was a bust.

Jordan isn't anywhere close to a bust. At least yet. Neither is Jamar Taylor.

They definitely have to step up this year.

So it would not surprise you that they would be willing to take a $12 million cap hit?

That's $12 million they would not be able to use this offseason or rollover to next offseason.

Why people continue speculating about Jordan being traded is baffling to me given the cap ramifications.

Ireland wasn't in a vacuum when he drafted Jordan. At the time, the team was desperately lacking a pass rusher opposite Wake. Either he would beat out Vernon or replace Wake before his contract ballooned to $9.7M & $9.8M in years '15 & '16 respectively. Vernon & Wake are the ones subject to trade.

Please notice, none of these men are contained in a cone of silence.

I still like the Jordan pick. In my opinion the defense will be just fine if the offense can be a more consistent threat to score every possession...we were building a defense to be aggressive but you cant be aggressive when the offense turns it over or cant stay on the field. This defense will reek havok once the offense can sustain drives and score points exceeding 25 a game...weve scored only 18 and 19 ppg in 2012 and 2013 while the defense has been 7th and 8th in scoring.
So the defense might have crumbled in pressure situations but its the offense that put them in that spot

I really like this site it gives a lot of stats all in one spot

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2013/

Miami was 25th in time of possession and had a turnover % that was 14th in the league. 30th in the league with plays per drive and 24th in scoring %. Miami was average or worse in every offensive category so it starts there. The defense will be fine

Defensive we had a statistically good defense, and with another year under Jordan's belt it can only get better I think. Miami had the most plays run against them but surrendered the 8th least points. An area that can improve is turnover % but I think that will go up once our offense is out of the bottom quarter of the league

I'm just responding to the report. No it would not surprise me with anything this team does. Hickey may provide Philbin more time & they want more cap space next yr. Who knows why this team does what it does.

So even though he produced when on the field and many people see the potential of him being a stud like I see and added to the fact that the Dolphins havent show any interest in a pass rusher at all you still think this? I get the joke the "Dolphins are dumb" but when do you see them trade or cut a player who has this potential so early? Come on now

Maybe they do not believe he will be nothing more than a 3rd down specialist & they want to get what they can while someone else thinks other wise.

I would have never thought this team would trade Marshall for little to nothing. The Dolphins are not dumb. Calling them dumb is an insult to dumb people. They past dumb 10 yrs ago.

Wow........... Marshall didn't want to be here and that was very much well known when the deal happened and He got traded for a 3rd when............ sorry to say (whispering) he's never made the playoffs ONCE in his career. Talented but let's not use that as the example as to why the Dolphins are dumb in your eyes

He wanted a better QB.

Is that his fault? Is a WR suppose to be the player that carries a team to the playoffs? Kinda odd on the fence jumping people do ( Not implying you-just fans ) When there is talk about how Marino could not win a SB then its because of the team was weak.

Its just one of many very questionable moves.

Calvin Johnson was on the Lions team that went 0-16 and had good numbers, so no, a WR shouldn't be the only factor in a playoff football team.

I never once said that but at the same Marshall isn't the barometer of where of franchise is going especially when he's been on many teams close to the playoffs and never was able to have career games to get them to the next level but its whatever

If the GM and coach aren't on the same page, how can you tell how good a player is or isn't? Perhaps when they go to other teams and do well?

Just saw a fun what if question posted on Twitter to Dolphins fans:

Would you trade Dion Jordan and the 19th pick for the 1st pick in the draft, and if so who would you select?

Wow, can't wait to see the debates that would develop from this question if it were a real possibility.

Uh...no kidding you would because that trade is essentially Dion Jordan for Jadaveon Clowney straight up...

How about trading Wake, that makes more sense then Jordan. I'm not a proponent of trading Wake, we're not going to be better in '14 without him, but unless he's willing to renegotiate his contract, there's a reasonable chance he's gone after this year. This is the year to get some value for him.

I don't see Houston willing to come all the way back to 19, they need a QB and if you could get Clowney at No. 2 why would St. Louis trade for one of our DE's...........Jacksonville, Oakland & Cleveland have similar needs for a top pick. I think Altanta at No. 6 is the earliest team willing to come back to 19 for the right price........then we're looking at OT's Jake Mathews or Greg Robinson.

It wasn't a serious question, more of a "if you had the chance would you take Clowney, Robinson or Watkins".

It's a worthwhile thought............if we wanted to move up to grab a top OT, who are possible trade partners and what would it cost. I certainly don't see us giving up either Jordan or Wake to move up in the first round............but what about Vernon?

Who cares what issues you have on your offensive line when a "once in a generation" type player is on the board. I'd pick Clowney 10 times out of 10, regardless of need. Franchises who draft high for need on a consistent basis remain in the divisional basement they're trying so hard to get out of.
