The Dolphins reportedly have interest in free agent Devin Hester.
The feeling is mutual as Hester said he would "love to play for the Dolphins." Hester would help a Dolphins' return unit that averaged only 7.8 yards on punt returns and 21.5 yards on kick returns. He is also open to playing wide receiver. Hester averaged 27.6 yards on 52 kickoff returns last season.

Marcus Thigpen struggled last year as a return man after having a nice year in 2012. Hester still a very good return man.

Offense, Defense & Special Teams.

Would love to sign him. How long has it been since we have had a real threat to return kicks all the way?

Problem is he doesn't play the other side of special teams. He'll also want snaps in the offense.

He does return both punts and kickoffs and his average last season were significantly higher then Thigpen.

I haven't seen much of him in a while but I wonder if he is still a guy who could take a short pass and turn it up field for 20 plus yards. Might be an interesting option in 4 WR sets.

He would be an interesting add. He's still a very dangerous return man on special teams, but I wonder how much he would add as a receiver. He actually played CB at the U, but the Bears tried to convert him as a WR. He did ok at WR but nothing to what they were hoping from him. They even practiced him at CB at times.

He will be 32 this yr. Miami will be paying for play 6+ yrs ago. He is not the return once was, get a young hungry returner, not an aging one.

I would still consider him for 1-2 years. The guy just ran a 4.3 in his recent workouts and is healthy and is an experienced veteran and as long as their was a roster spot for him, he would potentially help the kickoff and punt return game as well as provide depth at the #4-#5 wide out spot.

Of course this is not a move if they don't decide to do that you would lose sleep over either, but I think he could be a positive asset.

He ran a 4.38 last year and was still a dangerous returner last year. When players age their quickness starts to decline, so, that may become an issue. I still think that our blocking is the real issue on special teams.

Actually, I forgot that Jacoby Ford was out there and available. If I had the choice, even though he has been hurt a lot, I would bring him in being still only 26 years old and runs in that 4.28-4.3 range.

A few years ago I believe he ran back multiple kick offs in a season and he could play the 4-5 receiver spot. Perhaps for the NFL minimum too. This guy is flat out fast.

Hester led the league in kick return yards last season and was 6th in yards per return.

He also had a punt return TD.

He's still productive.

Starting field position would be a boost to this offense. Too many times this past season we saw the Dolphins starting with poor field position.

If he'd be willing to play for whatever Marcus Thigpen is making, I'd sign him and trade/cut Thigpen. Unfortunately he'll probably want more than he thinks he is worth.

I'd be happy to have him! Thigpen is completely ordinary as an NFL player & it cost us several times last year.

& if Hester can still run that 4.3 then he could run deep routes to at least shift coverages every now & then.

I get its tough to put a price on a future Hall of Famer but if he can lead the league in return yards is he not worth 1M a year?

I agree, like you would see 10 free yards before a defender and thats all he would get. Seemed like he had no speed, no juke moves or vision to make an explosive play smh

Pro Football Reference has him at 8th in YPR, but I do not know if they have a min. to be counted. He lead the league in total KO return Yds, but he also had 9 more than the 2nd place KR. Yes he is productive & it will fall to his contract demands. If he wants to be paid like the player of 2007, then I'd probably pass

you have to pick a seam and just explode through it. Sometimes you get stopped and sometimes you'll hit it up through and break free. He never did that, too indecisive.

Hester is primarily a return man, and even when he was getting run at WR, he was a #3 at best. He is not getting big money from any team at this point.

Return specialist, #4 WR don't get big money, especially when they are on the wrong side of 30 years old.

I don't see the Dolphins signing Hester unless they want to pay $4 million for an aged ST returner.

According to an NFL personnel evaluator whose team has discussed the possibility of going after Hester, the former Pro Bowl return specialist is currently seeking a deal in the $4-million-per-year range.

If this passes, then teams will not need kick returners.

Quote:
Three years after the NFL moved kickoffs from the 30-yard line to the 35, it may be time to move kickoffs five yards forward again.

The Competition Committee announced today that owners will vote at next week’s league meeting on whether to move kickoffs again, this time to the 40-yard line.

I remember the day when they moved it back to the 30 in order to get more returns. How times have changed.

Hester signed a 3 year deal with the Falcons. No numbers were released, but I would be SHOCKED if he got anywhere near 4 mill/per year.

Atlanta is throwing some money out there this year. I said I would be shocked if Hester got close to 4 mill/per year. Well, the Falcons gave him 3 mill/per year. This is from WalterFootball.com.

Falcons sign KR Devin Hester (3 years, $9M; $3.5M guaranteed): B- Grade
Handing Devin Hester $3.5 million guaranteed seems like the Falcons are paying a bit on past production. Hester turns 32 in November and has just one special-teams touchdown in the past two seasons, so he's far from the dynamic weapon the Bears enjoyed in the previous decade. However, Hester was seventh in punt-return average last year, so he still has some juice left in him. He'll definitely be an upgrade over what Atlanta had on special teams in 2013, even if he's no longer the same player.

Miami was 16th in starting field position 23rd in PR yards per return and 25th in KR yards per return. Id rather see thigpen get more of a role on offense and have someone else do special teams. Maybe we could draft a returner and his family with our first pick :haha

You know, even though Ginn was a disappointment I just didn't get letting him go. At the time I was thinking that we still could use his talents even though he wasn't tough-minded.

Dave, personally I think it is because Ginn never lived up to his first round pick expectations and the South Florida media blew that up and I think the negativity surrounding him led to his departure.

I agree that they should have kept him and just kept building around him. To this day he could have been a steady #3 or #4 receiver and our punt/kick off guy and IMO been a pretty good option.

Right now, I wish they would sign Jacoby Ford, although "something" must be up with him in terms of injury for teams to not sign a guy that fast for special teams. He could come in at the NFL minimum too and a couple of years back with the Raiders he scored multiple SP TD's or maybe teams don't value him as a good enough receiver, but as a #5 receiver with his speed, I would at least bring him in for a look.

I agree about Ginn. He just was not worthy of being a #1 pick but has turned out to be pretty versatile in the league as a returner & receiver ail the while going from team to team. He did have a much better career than Brady Quinn so all the disappointment for not using that pick on Quinn was for nothing.

Ginn should have been released...........he was so undependable. Can't have everybody else busting their butt and this guy running out of bounds short of the first down, repeatedly dropping passes or making no attempt because he's scared of getting hit.

Granted, he showed brilliance as a kick off returner, but that's not a big part of the game anymore.

He had a 53 yard catch for a touchdown against Revis...

Other than that... not much.
