While the Dolphins didn’t sign the top three guards on the market (Zane Beadles, Geoff Schwartz and Jon Asamoah), they will meet with Rams free agent guard Shelley Smith today, a source told The Palm Beach Post.

Smith, 26, (6-foot-4, 312 pounds), played in 10 games for the Rams last year and split his time between left and right guard.

He was graded by Pro Football Focus as the league’s 23rd best guard of 81 last season. It was only his second year as a starter (he graded 56th in 2012.)

Last season he was graded as the league’s fourth-best run blocking guard but 58th in pass protection. He was a 6th round draft choice out of Colorado State in 2010.

Smith already visited the Giants and Patriots and left New England without a deal this morning.

Even though he had a negative grade as a pass blocker, he only allowed 2 sacks and 16 pressures... but it was in 371 snaps... so take that for what it's worth.

Graded very well as a run blocker and I think that's where we need to look for our running game, between the tackles.

I saw that on Facebook that he had left New England without a deal as well as the fact that he is a Road Grader.

It seems you can never have the best of both pass protection and run blocking with an OT. It's one or the other. Great pass protector, horrible, to average run blocker and vice versa.

Hopefully, he is an upgrade over Martin if he were to sign with the fins! I also noticed he played for Benson the line coach while he was with the Texans.

young, fits the scheme, can come in and start and tbh I can handle Brenner or Garner starting at the other guard or getting Davin Joseph for cheap so this is a nice move if we get it

The guys who do both are named to Pro Bowls, rarely hit free agency and command top dollar if they do.

Brandon Albert is a Pro Bowler who hit free agency and signed a big contract.

He is an excellent pass protector and OK run blocker, though he had a down year in that department in 2013.

I hope his play matches the size of his contract.

Sounds good to me!

Do we need to get two Guards? Or do we have one, like Nate Garner, remaining?

I would think Miami would want to sign another guard and a ORT. I consider Nate Garner a swing OL, a depth guy that can play and be respectable over a short stretch.

Sounds like Miami is pushing very hard to get Smith signed today. I don't know a thing about him so I won't say he's an upgrade, downgrade or on par with last year's guys. But, Benton has some influence it seems and considering Philbin and Co. have stayed away from familiar guys they didn't like the pass I'd say Smith's upside was give the thumbs up.

Zach Strief is the veteran I hope they bring in and sign. I would be much more excited about him than Shelley Smith even if for different line roles. Strief has a proven track record and IMO would bolster the line immediately. Imagine Albert, Pouncey and Strief "protecting" Tannehill. That is what we need not "hoping" and relying on a rookie right away. I mean draft a set of rookies, but unless one really rises to the top we need a heavy dose of veterans that are proven yet not over the hill like McKinnie is heading towards (assuming they bring him back as a rotating lineman, which I would have no problem if he played the right side.)

Now signing

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter 3m
Guard Shelley Smith, formerly of the Rams, agrees with Dolphins. 2 years, $5.5m. More Miami OL reinforcements.

That is super cheap for a young guy who has a ton of upside and is a good run blocker

Shelley Smith is now working as the second-string left guard at Dolphins camp.
Thought to be a prize free agent acquisition, Smith flamed out quickly in an early-camp trial at center, and now is backing up Daryn Colledge. The good news is RG Dallas Thomas has been a pleasant surprise, and at least Miami has formed continuity up front with Samson Satele seemingly entrenched at center. A proficient run blocker with last year's Rams, Smith should provide solid depth
Roto

When did he become a prized free agent...The guy was never a full time starter and wasn't paid much......

If he wasn't shifting between center and guard, he would probably be with the first team at guard right now.

Im confused.... where's the problem??

Shelley Smith was a BACKUP when he signed up. He has familiarity with the new OL coach.... Pretty sure Miami did not break the bank to obtain his services.... he's not getting starter's money.

He has versatility now at all 3 interior line positions, getting first team reps at center, and is learning both guard positions...

I would actually think its good that Thomas beat him out for the RG position, at least that shows he was worth a 3rd round pick....

Now if Shelley develops into a starter.... well.... Collidge is old, the LG position will be his next season.

WHERE IS THE PROBLEM???

Did we not want Satele to grab the center position in Pouncey's absence? Did we not want Collidge at LG, thats what we signed him for? Did we not want Thomas to develop?

Wow rotoworld.... do me a favor..... go post pictures of tom brady's new haircut... theres got to be a fashion no no happening after practice in Boston, leave your knowledge of Miami's roster and free agent acquisitions to people that actually look at what Miami is doing, and not dissecting Mike Florio's used toilet paper.
