The Tennessee Titans swooped in and stole head coach Ken Whisenhunt out from under the Detroit Lions' noses earlier this week.

Now the Miami Dolphins have pilfered the Lions' top choice for offensive coordinator.

The Dolphins have hired Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Bill Lazor to run their offense, a person with knowledge of the team's search has told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. ESPN's Chris Mortensen first reported the hire.

Miami chose Lazor over former Redskins offensive boss Kyle Shanahan, who also interviewed for the job.

Lazor is widely credited for the emergence of Nick Foles, who led the league in passer rating and set an NFL record for touchdown-to-interception ratio (27:2).

Although Lazor worked under Chip Kelly's innovative offense, his resume isn't limited to one system. He was offensive coordinator of the Virginia Cavaliers for three seasons after stints with NFL coaching legends Dan Reeves, Joe Gibbs and Mike Holmgren.

Lazor will be tasked with tutoring quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who stumbled down the stretch and fell out of the final AFC playoff spot after losing confidence in Mike Sherman.

The bar for Lazor is set low in South Florida. Despite a considerable advantage in offensive personnel, the Dolphins have tied the Jaguars for fewest games with at least 30 points (two) over the past two seasons.

If Lazor can maximize Tannehill's potential and bring creativity to the offense, this team can get off the postseason schneid for the first time since the 2008 season.

I have been reading it for weeks now. Miami can not hire anyone, nobody wants the job....

Obviously Miami is a very appealing situation. It says a lot about this team that Lazor was reportedly in Detroit signing a contract, and all of the sudden we snatch him in. With all the talent that Detroit had to work with on offense, it's very reassuring that we got the upper hand in all this.

I think we are officially over the hump & leaving mediocrity in our rear view mirror.

this speaks volumes about matt stafford. Unfixable? Uncoachable? Always had really bad mechanics.

Steve Ross's wallet will do that. I'd have to think that Ross told Lazor this is at least a 2 year gig (job security) and he'll pay more than the Lions.

Location was the overriding factor here.

Who wants to go live in Detroit nowadays?
