Post Are Miami Dolphins giving away plays to defenses?
Quote:
by Andrew Abramson

DAVIE — Coach Joe Philbin seemed surprised on Tuesday when he was asked why quarterback Ryan Tannehill shouts “go” right before a passing play or “go-go” before a running play on nearly every play of the game.

If reporters and fans have noticed, wouldn’t it be obvious to defenses?

“I wouldn’t know,” Philbin said. “But we vary our cadence at times. Sometimes we don’t, sometimes we do. It’s all based on what we think is the best interest of moving the football. I’m not really concerned about it.”

Yeah, tell that to Jimmy Johnson after the Patriots embarrassed in the playoffs and promptly said they knew our audibles which led to turnovers. Offensive Coordinator Gary Stephens faced his wrath on the plane ride home and got the axe later in the week. That's where we got Stephens quote on how he can't make chicken salad out of chicken :crap .

:headscratch

Do he and his staff watch game tape and do those tapes have sound? Of course does he do in games what he does in practice. I am going to guess that the coaching staff is at practice?

Well we know exactly how Belichick got those calls by using someone to tape practices. He should've gotten a lifetime ban out of that. How many teams were beaten by the Cheatriots due to this? I know several teams they beat to get to the superbowl felt like they should've been stripped of those titles.

I made a thread about this after Sundays game cause it was driving me crazy, if I can figure this out I'm pretty sure that opposing defences shouldn't have a problem

If our coach is honestly telling the truth and really did not catch this I only have two words "KILL ME!!!"

Glad you picked up on this PayDirt..........and I'm even happier someone brought this up to Philbin. If it's obvious to someone watching the game then it must be obvious to the Defense. Haven't heard if anyone from the Bills mentioned it.

Either this coaching staff takes playing dumb to an extreme... or they aren't playing and are dumb to an extreme.

Wow.

Is this really happening? I can't believe it! If we see it, what are the chances that defenses watching film don't see it? Must be nice to know what the offense is doing right before the snap!

Yes it happened. Some of us pointed it out last week and it is a consistent thing.

How stupid is this coaching staff?

I'm shocked at how stupid this is.

Cant a reporter ask this question? I'm dying for the answer.

A reporter has already asked and it has already been answered by the head coach. Check the threads.

Philbin was asked, said he wasn't aware of it and said he thought it wasn't a big deal.

If that's true, I'm officially diving head first out the side door of the Philbin bus!

I remember it being pointed out last week during the game, but I must have missed the thread where it was discussed further.

This saddens me beyond comprehension. I was so sure Philbin was the right guy. If something like this is so absolutely glarringly wrong, but still had to be pointed out to him, yet remains uncorrected the following week, it makes me wonder what other problems this team has that it shouldn't.

Every guy is the right guy when we hire him , every free agent signing is a great one when we close the deal & every draft pick is a sure thing when we make the pick .... then reality sets in. I was a bit guilty of this this season as well. Im not for changing regimes every 3 years but I still find it hard to believe that this is the Miami Dolphins. I still think this is a good team. However I am also a believer that it all starts at the QB position & the guy who I still have confidence in ... lets just say I am getting a bit nervous.

:haha

I didn't catch it this game, but if you all said you saw/heard the same thing then I believe you. That should have been corrected last week. I'm not jumping off of the Philben bus, but I do think that he has delegated duties to his coordinators, and Sherman is letting him down. This is the time for him to realize that this is HIS team, and his head is on the block. Take charge, Philben!

I am not so convinced that Sherman is really letting anyone down. Yes, some of his play calling no doubt is questionable, especially when something worked great and then never go back to it in the game, but I also feel if the Miami players executed his play calling better as it works both ways.

That play call to Wallace was there open only for Wallace to drop the ball. The deep pass to Wallace, it is safe to say Tanny hung it up there enough to get batted and tipped instead of throwing deep ahead of his receiver. Those were aggressive play calls that could have helped change the tone of this game, but the guys did not execute. Today there was a nice mixture of run/pass all the way into the 3rd quarter, then the wheels fell off the bus. However, I agree with you Dave, if Philbin has the final override and he is offensive minded, you would hope he would put his two cents in as the leading decision at times and especially when things are falling apart.

However, IMO, the offensive line is in misery and perhaps it isn't smart to fire anyone mid-season, BUT, if there was a line coach out there that could help improve the team's blocking, I am all for firing of Turner.

I actually thought he called a decent game yesterday, but if he hasn't changed his go/go-go audible then he is telegraphing his play and letting the defense know whether it is a pass or run. That is bad coaching IMO.

Did anyone notice this still happening in the game against the bengals Thursday night?

what exactly is happening. There was no indication of whether its a run or pass based on "go or go-go". There was even a built in delay on a couple of sequences. Someone fill me in.

Post Re: Are Miami Dolphins giving away plays to defenses?
i noticed a Hard GO GO that almost pulled the defense offsides....

I really don't think this is all that big of a problem as it is being made out to be.

I mean seriously, what is the big issue, that GO is telegraphing a run, and the GO GO is telegraphing a pass. by the time those cadences are happening, its 100% reactionary, and over thinking that as a defense really puts you behind the 8 ball a bit because your thinking its automatically gonna be a run, and what do you know it ends of being a pass and you sold out on it.

It really is nothing but a simple cadence, and shouldnt be over thought really..... now if we were telegraphing an audible, that would be a different story..... like if "COWBOY COWBOY" meant a go route and THill was talking to the right side of the line, (or whichever receiver was on that side), I would be more concerned because the route itself was telegraphed and could now be defended prior to the snap and possibly cause a turnover.

the GO/ GO GO is really nothing but a snap cadence, and like I mentioned before i noticed a hard GO GO that stunted the defense a split second because it was the third GO that snapped the ball.

That all being said, should the Dolphins consider varying the snap cadence? sure, why not. Peyton probably has 20 different words he shouts out in his snap cadence, and ours is very high school/college simple. but again, the snap cadence doesnt telegraph anything other than when the ball is snapped, and i have witnessed fake GO GO's.

It is very vanilla, but it really isnt all that alarming. I think we are all over analyzing the importance of this.

Agreed. No matter what Tannehill says the Defense is gonna react to what they see not what to what they hear.

I disagree. If linebackers and safeties hear GO GO, they are more likely to crash the line.

If defense ends hear GO, they are more likely to forsake contain and attack the pocket.

And it doesn't take much reaction to do so.

I hope this is not occurring to the degree opposing D's can determine run or pass by Tanny's cadence. Though, you are correct Rich.........it's a major issue if it is. Play action will have no effect if the D already knows the play is a pass.

How could it NOT be an advantage for the opposing D? If they know pass or run, even if it is only a second before the ball is snapped, that can make a big difference. Sometimes a second is all there is between getting a pass off and taking a sack. Is there any wonder Tannehill leads in getting sacked?

This has got to be the most absolutely disheartening aspect of this team right now, at least it is to me. My enthusiasm for this coaching staff has taken a severe hit. They are saving belicheat a lot of trouble.

there is a reason Bellichek goes out of his way to steal signals, any edge is huge in a game of inches.
