Brady gets the tuck rule and Tannehill gets his pass called a fumble, even though it traveled about 10 yards from where he was standing.

It was the right call. Ball came out before he started going forward.

The ball was coming lose, but he still had enough control of it to actually THROW it. When you THROW it, it's a pass, and that one was incomplete.

Not sure he threw it as much as he directed forward with his wrist.

I would call "directing it forward with his wrist" a pass. I'm sure if Brady did it, it would have been called that way.

Have to agree with rodney... I've seen this happen many times and it's never been called a fumble. As long as the intent to throw is there, it should be an incomplete pass.

The referees got creative with the rules on that one.

It was an "empty hand" play. The ball was knocked loose from his hand, thus losing control and his momentum carried the ball forward. You can debate whether or not it's a good rule, but the rule was applied correctly and that was a fumble. And I, unlike Rich, have seen that call made many, many times on other quarterbacks. I don't think it was a case of official bias against us. The call was correct.

The most important word you said was "forward."

If the ball was moving forward when he lost it, well of course it was incomplete, and I'm sure you would agree. My point is, I don't think the ball could have traveled as far if he didn't have some sort of control over it as he threw it. If it wasn't going forward, then it would have dropped at his feet.

He threw it. Might call it an ugly throw, but he threw it. I've seen Brady get that all the time.

But he did not have control of the ball when he "threw" it. The ball was loose in his hand, and that is an "empty hand" play. The rule was applied correctly. And if you don't think he could have gotten the ball that far without possessing the ball, test it yourself. Rest a ball in your hand and see how far you can fling it with momentum. You don't have to have full possession of a ball to fling it a good distance.

I agree with you, this is how the rule should be. He still flung that thing forward, hard to see that as being called a fumble. It didnt just fall out of his hand.

Watching it was close. The wierd part is everyone stopped play and there wasn't a whistle. Either way the play was called on the field, there wouldn't have been enough evidence to over turn it on replay. So it was ruled a fumble and a fumble it is.

In a few years when Tanny is breaking the records and becomes the NFL darling, perhaps they will invent the cock rule for this play. If Tanny cocks the ball, it's not a fumble.
