Post Randy Starks flips off Miami sideline
After he got his sack in the 4th, Starks gave (I'm assuming) Philbin the finger.

I know he's unhappy about his contract situation, but grow up dude. Good job getting fined a ridiculous amount.

Well Starks is a beast. He was the franchise player last year and lost his starting job because he didn't attend off-season workouts. Philbin may not like players who are vocal but they aren't going to win anything without talented players like Wallace and Stark.

This is a coaching issue. If they stick to their obstinant ways, they might trade Starks which would be a big mistake.

This is a reason why this team has sucked for so many years. It's business Randy, like I said earlier in the year. Just play, you are getting paid very well. Hopefully this is a misunderstanding and it will be cleared up tomorrow.

Anyone else worried about team chemistry...Starks,Wallace,and Mathews all seemed to have an issue today in a win.
If Starks really did that to the coach there is a serious problem going on in the club house...The Wallace thing could just be the media making a problem by reading too much into what was said

Scramoron lost his team year one with things like this.

Starks has always been a team guy. There has to be more to the story here.

When I saw it I thought he was holding up a 2 cuz it was his second sack.

I wanna be worried or even sad but that picture is so friggin funny to me. Lmao

Step up your game coaches. This guy deserves to be treated like a starting Vet (well before this) cuz he had a better game than Odrick, on limited time

Mathews? What did he do? He should be lucky that he's even on the team.

He should've never had his starting spot taken in the first place. His holdout is a natural part of the business, it's almost cliche because it's been done so many times by players.

However, making him a backup is moronic.

I agree with you Rock. Starks holding out is just as natural as Miami franchising him. But I remember Starks made a comment a week or two ago about feeling he was being punished by being demoted so I have no doubt he is giving the bird to the coaches. But I am really curious to see how Philbin responds to this.

If Philbin is smart he'll ignore it publicly and give Starks his starting role back.

If indeed he flipped the sideline off because of his contract and benching, the whole thing is an embarrassment though. I don't think I've ever seen something like that before. Both Philbin and Starks are boneheads for their decisions.

Here is an article on the subject. I think it was in poor taste to do that if Starks was flipping off the coaches. But this is the comment he made a few weeks ago that I mentioned above.

"I've been there before. I'm not going to say nothing bad about it. It is what it is. I wasn't here so I guess this is my punishment."

Starks' version of middle finger incident

A photographer captured a picture of Dolphins defensive tackle Randy Starks holding up his middle finger, while looking directly at the Dolphins sideline, after getting a sack Sunday. Two published reports speculated that Starks was giving the finger to the Dolphins' coaching staff because he lost his starting job.

Starks is denying that was the case.

Starks' agent, Tony Paige, said Starks "told me was joking with one of his teammates. It was not intended for the coaches."

What matters, in this case, is what Joe Philbin thinks after speaking with Starks about it. But since nobody can read Starks' mind or be certain of his intent, Philbin faces a difficult call in determining how to handle this.

Even if Philbin is convinced the gesture wasn't intended for coaches, a fine is still very possible,if not probable, because Philbin wants his players to comport themselves properly.

"Touched down safely -- time to get back to work tomorrow," Starks tweeted a couple of hours ago.

Jared Odrick won the starting job fairly. He was dominant in the Pre Season and training camp (from all reports).

What are you guys talking about?

the teams that sacrafice the most are the teams that win!

So where in the annals of history has a franchise player/pro bowler been supplanted by a guy who played against scrubs in the preseason. Seriously, if this is the case, it is an NFL first.

BTW, 1.5 sacks against one of the better lines in football from the DT position....that is beast-like production and needs to be the starter. Odrick quietly had a good game but he's no Starks.

All 3 DT's will get plenty of playing time.

Starks was hurt for a lot of camp. Odrick was healthy and dominant.

I don't care what Starks did a year ago, Odrick is the starter because he played better than Starks.

And let's not forget Odrick is a 1st round pick who is finally playing 43 DT like he did at Penn St. He SHOULD be a starter on any team.

You don't replace a pro bowl starter because of injury or you're feeling butt hurt over negociations.

Tell that to Bellichick and Brady.

The difference there is Brady was better than Bledsoe. Odrick isn't better than starks at either rushing the passer or stopping the run.

FTR - Starks had 2.5 tackles with 1.5 sacks
Odrick had 1 tackle.

Odrick started.

So then Starks starts next game.

You play whoever earns the job. Odrick earned the start yesterday. Starks (probably) earned it for Indy.

I was under the impression that the coaches noticed Starks' production falling off at the end of the season. Since we are deep, we are having him come off the bench in the rotation to keep him and the rest fresh. I think the coaches showed last night they were right. I'd like to see a play count of all the players. I would guess that Starks had just as many plays as the rest of them ... aside from Cam Wake who is a BEAST.

Post Re: Randy Starks flips off Miami sideline
Patriots appear to be preparing for life after Wes Welker early this season. (Cliff Welch/Icon SMI)

Are the Patriots already preparing for life without Wes Welker? That was the buzz around Foxborough after Welker, awaiting a new contract to replace the franchise tag tender he reluctantly signed this offseason, made just three catches in New England’s Week 1 win and split time with Julian Edelman.

That topic figures to be front and center again after this week, too. When the Patriots took the field for the first time on Sunday, it was Edelman and not Welker lined up in the slot against the Cardinals.

New England’s opening possession lasted all of one play, with Tom Brady throwing in interception, but Edelman again took the field while Welker stood on the sideline after the Patriots got the ball back. Welker finally made his way onto the field late in the first quarter after tight end Aaron Hernandez limped off with an injury, sending the Patriots into a three-receiver set.

Brady said earlier this week that Welker is a “huge part of this offense” and “there are going to be games where Wes has not as many opportunities, and there are going to be games where he has a ton of opportunities.” Given that it’s Week 2, Brady probably has a point, but keeping a healthy Welker off the field early sure appears to be a statement move by Bill Belichick.

Welker has 554 catches over the past five seasons and led the league in receptions three times during that stretch; Edelman has 49 career catches and entered Sunday with 12 catches since 2010.

Edelman is also set to be a free agent after this season — though he’s earning about $615K this season, compared to the $9.5 million Welker is taking home.

Are the Patriots just mixing things up and/or saving Welker for later in the season? Or is this a purposeful move by Belichick to reduce Welker’s value and prep his team for a future without their reliable receiver?

Either way, it’s a development to keep an

Maybe this will show you some of what Miami's coaches are seeing with Starks.

Pro Football Focus wrote:
At the midseason turn Starks was our second highest graded defensive tackle behind Geno Atkins. Over the second half of the season he was our lowest graded defensive tackle. That is the dictionary definition of a season of two halves. His biggest struggles came as a run defender and he couldn’t make the consistent impact as a pass rusher to balance his contribution.
