MIAMI GARDENS —
Pat Devlin, in perhaps a last-ditch effort to remain on Miami’s roster, struggled Thursday night to show the Dolphins why they should keep him as their third quarterback.
Coach Joe Philbin has said he would consider going into the regular season with just two quarterbacks — starter Ryan Tannehill and backup Matt Moore. ...
The 2013 preseason has been less kind to Devlin. He finished it Thursday’s game completing 39 of 67 passes for 418 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
The Dolphins, playing against New Orleans’ reserves, moved the ball inside the Saints’ 20-yard line five times in the first half but scored only one touchdown, settling twice for field goals.
Midway through the first quarter, Devlin threw an 8-yard touchdown reception to rookie tight end Dion Sims.
It went downhill from there. Later in the quarter Devlin overthrew tight end Michael Egnew in the end zone.
Early in the second quarter, the Dolphins couldn’t score when they had the ball 1st and goal on the Saints’ 8-yard line, including three attempts from the1-yard line. Devlin missed a wide open Sims on fourth down, throwing the ball low.
On Miami’s next drive, Devlin threw an interception from New Orleans’ 8-yard line.
In a halftime interview, Philbin didn’t criticize Devlin.
“He made some good throws, but … we’ve got to be more productive down in the red zone,” Philbin said. ...
