I hope Carp has his bags packed. Sturgis is going to be da man.

That 58-yard field goal by rookie Caleb Sturgis and his repeated ability to kick the ball in the end zone (6 for 6) and get touchbacks (4) seems to give him an edge currently in the kicking competition. Good night for him. Tough night for Dan Carpenter, who didn't kick at all.

I'm glad Sturgis is looking good...............but except for two weeks last year, Carpenter has been a very solid kicker.............assuming he's cut, he wont be unemployed long.

It's a salary cap move, plain and simple. Carpenter missed some clutch kicks last year, kicks that could've given this team a winning record. He's making over $2 million a year while Sturgis is making $400K. If your kicker is not gonna make clutch kicks, he doesn't deserve over $2 million

plus with Carpenter we know we have no shot to win a game if we stall on the opponent's 42 yard line with 12 seconds left and down by 1. But from 56 to 60 yards out we have a shot with Sturgis.

a big reason why the Vikings made the post season was that Blair Walsh nailed 10 field goals from 50+ yards out.

I agree. Carpenter still is a very good kicker, but he's showing signs of decline on the long stuff as he's not the consistent kicker that he used to be. I remember Jimmy Johnson trading Pete Stoyanovich to the Chiefs because he said he didn't believe in paying a kicker that kind of money. I think a lot of us were in denial that one of our favorite Dolphins kickers was on the decline as well.

I'm not so sure on the decline is a good way to describe kickers still in their 20s. Maybe not working hard enough during the off-season...I'm sure fat salaries tend to make that a reality.
