Last weekend, we shared Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald‘s report that impending Dolphins free agent safety Reshad Jones has yet to have any substantive contract talks with the team.

Jackson reports that defensive tackles Randy Starks and Paul Soliai are in a similar spot to Jones. Per Jackson, the Dolphins haven’t made a multiyear contract offer to Starks since the early days of the offseason before they slapped the franchise tag on him. That offer was reportedly well short of what Starks is looking for, which led to the tag and a July 15 deadline to land a long-term deal.

Soliai is in the final year of a two-year deal, but the team hasn’t approached him about staying around in 2014 and beyond.

Unless these guys are willing to sign for a discounted rate...........I don't see why the team should be in a hurry to enter contract negotiations. Who knows what our needs will be in 2014 or how they'll play this year............either one could fall off, get injured or be seen as non-essential past 2013.

The Dolphins have not done a good job of drafting big bodied defensive tackles to take over for aging starters. It's not a knock on Soliai or Starks, but their prime years are probably behind them. Hopefully we can keep one of them, but with the move to the 4-3 defense I'm not sure if we need a big bodied guy like Soliai that just stops the run. I think players like Starks should be rewarded for playing any position the coaches ask of him. He gained weight for the DT position when they asked him to move to the middle.

Why would we not?

Obviously you were no fan of Tim Bowens then.
