Armon Binns stood out in spring practices

The Miami Herald reports "nobody on offense helped his stock more" this spring than Dolphins WR Armon Binns.

"I don't want to jinx him ' I'm usually the kiss of death ' but [Binns] is playing faster," said coach Joe Philbin. Claimed off waivers from the Bengals in December, Binns caught six passes for 67 yards in three games with the Dolphins. He's heading into training camp as the No. 4 receiver.

I hate this month of football. Lega-doo-doo was building himself the SAME rep during camp last year, hopefully Binns isn't the sequel to the Lega-doo-doo drama. He pretty much cost us the game against New England in Miami.

I'm still inclined to believe that Matthews has a better shot to pan out as a good receiver than Binns does, but I could be wrong

LOL. I was thinking about Roberto Wallace, too, from last year. He's with the Titans now. He has good size and ok hands, so, he'll get a shot, but his speed will have him cut in the summer every year.

I'm holding out hope for someone from the back of the pack to take the next step forward. He dropped those two balls in the last game of the season. That's when you add contact to the equation.

Here's a little Pro Football Talk hype on Binns from today's PFT blog:

Quote:
Binns, a relative newcomer himself, arrived via waivers in December. The Bengals cut him to make room for center Kyle Cook, who was emerging from short-term injured reserve. The Dolphins pounced.

Brian Hartline has called Binns the best waiver-wire pickup during Hartline’s four seasons in Miami.

Per the Sun-Sentinel, Binns played so well in practice last season (the paper calls him “dominant”) that Binns played slot receiver for the final three games. It carried into the offseason with Binns being “consistently one of the top playmakers” and the “biggest red-zone threat” on the team.

Binns’ biggest attribute is the speed with which he plays the game.

Should we just go ahead and cut him now? Why waste our time, right?

I love all these feel-good stories around this time of year.

Everything I read up until preseason I take with a grain of salt. I really don't pay attention to it. Been here before as a long time fan.

lol...hartline...the best waiver pickup since I've been here. Teams don't waive starting caliber WRs. We will see though. I remember 2 dropped passes that killed us.

Binns doesn't need to be a starting caliber WR, just demonstrate that he can add depth and another weapon. We already have our starters in Hartline and Wallace.

Binns is a young player. Not unheard of for young players to improve and develop into legitimate NFL players.

Give Binns a chance. He had some drops but was productive early last year. He doesn't have to be the next Miles Austin to be a solid contributor. He strikes me as that guy who won't have a ton of catches but could find his way into the end zone 4 or 5 times if defenses have to focus on the likes of Wallace, Hartline and Keller.

If he flops then oh well, not much was expected anyway.

I don't know much about BINNS. But WRs often take 3-4 Years to "arrive". So, what's his "40"? And how much size does he actually have? Did he "grow up" in a bigtime program? And just how coachable is he? Lastly, does he have any "upside" left, or have we seen all that we'll ever see?

I agree. Here is an article from the Miami Herald from 8/2012 stating Legedu Naanee has "rocketed to the top of the depth chart after a string of solid practices". I'd love to see Binns become the next Calvin Johnson. I'm just taking all this for what it is. Reporting filler/fluff in the off season.

BY ADAM H. BEASLEY

Quite literally, Legedu Naanee’s name means “Good is coming.”

It just hasn’t arrived yet, at least in the NFL.

But after two teams, two foot surgeries and five nondescript seasons, good — and perhaps even more — might just be around the bend in Miami.

Naanee, the journeyman receiver who signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins in the spring, has rocketed to the top of a team’s depth chart after a string of solid practices. Naanee, who caught a team-high five passes in last weekend’s scrimmage, is projected to start Friday’s exhibition opener against Tampa Bay

Just about every year, there is someone who 'stands out' in the underwear portion of the offseason. Once the pads come on, can he separate from defenders is the real question. We've seen this kind of player come and go thru time...Nanee, Armstrong, Roberto Wallace...the list goes on...

That's not to say that he won't develop further, but showing up with ripples and flash in minicamp and OTAs is not the same as TC...

And TC isn't the regular season.
