Post Brandon Gibson believes he can succeed in the slot, but ...
... Rotoworld does not.

Quote:
Brandon Gibson believes he can succeed in the slot.

The slot is where Gibson has been lining up in OTAs. "I can run any route," Gibson claimed. "I can separate. (And) I can get open." We don't doubt Gibson has an extensive route tree ' most fifth-year receivers do ' but the latter two claims are more dubious. Gibson often had trouble separating in St. Louis, and was prone to drops and mental mistakes when he did. Gibson's 2012 line of 51/691/5 2012 should go down as the high-water mark of his career.

I don't think the Dolphins signed Gibson because they wanted a 50 catch/600 yard receiver. I think they have much bigger plans for him, especially now that Bess is gone.

Brandon Gibson is a solid WR and will have a solid year for the Dolphins. Rotoworld.com has pretty much attacked all things Dolphins, so I am not surprised to read this.

i'm projecting 54 catches.....700 yds......5 TD's as the 4th option in the passing game.
But alot of his catches will be key to keeping drives alive.

I expect Gibson to have a decent year as the slot receiver. He can play at any of the WR positions. That is why he is here now and Bess is gone. Philbin wants his receivers to be able to play any of the WR positions. Defenses are going to try and neutralize Wallace and Keller so that will allow Gibson and Hartline to see a lot of one on one coverages and have big seasons.

I'd like to see Rishard Matthews win that slot spot.

Still don''t get why we traded one of the most productive slot receivers in the NFL to make room for a guy who has never had success there.

I agree with you PZ.........I think there's a wide open competition for that No. 3 spot.

Gibson dropped 3 passes last year. 3.66% of passes thrown at him.
Bess dropped 6 passes last year. 5.71% of passes thrown at him

He had a 13.1% dropped pass rate in 2010.

Spending time scouring Rams fans sites and forums, the most consistent theme with the guy is that he's extremely inconsistent. He's also now going to be running quite a bit out of a position where he's spent very little time in his NFL career.

I'm not expecting much from him. I think he'll continue to contribute 3rd down conversion catches, which he seems to have a knack for (but then again so did Bess) .... but that's about all at this point.

I find that I am getting very little sleep now that Rotoworld does not agree with putting Brandon Gibson in the slot.

IMO, because of these numbers. 1-2-5-3-1.

Those numbers represent Bess's TD catches in his 5 Yr career.

Well, height, weight, and speed gives Gibson the edge. Athleticism definitely.

Davone Bess
5' 10", 193 lbs
40 Time: 4.64

Brandon Gibson
6' 0", 205 lbs
40 Time: 4.58

What I think makes Gibson more dangerous is that he can play outside. The Dolphins believe that he excels inside as well in their schemes. Ireland follows the multiple positions fetish that Parcells likes in players.

Now, don't get me wrong. I really liked Bess, but he had zero outside game. Remember us criticizing Philben for running Bess deep last year? I think those plays really stick out as pitiful in mind.

Gibson wasn't a starter all of those years either, he was mostly a backup.
Bess had way more opportunity to score than he did. Now i'm not sayin that Gibson is anything great but neither is Bess. And I would hope that we're not living off of short slot routes anymore. That's a thing of the past. It seems to me that Philbin, much like Green Bay would prefer to have it's receiver core average close to 6 feet tall for each guy and that they can all play out of multiple WR positions.

Have no clue as to who those numbers represent. Please let us know.

Going to guess you are referring to Gibson, but his numbers are 1-2-1-5. Half his rookie yr was spent on the sidelines.

Simple hard fact here.

12 TD catches in 77 games played for Bess. Bess's numbers have been declining.

9 TD catches in 55 games played for Gibson. Gibson's numbers have been on the upswing.

I too was a Bess fan, he contributed a lot on 3rd downs. But I have to admit that I tired of him always going to the ground after the catch, I didn't see much YAC from him. I hope Gibson is an improvement in this area.

I share this sentiment too, that pretty much sums him up as a player. He leaves little to be desired. And I couldn't stand watching Tannehill try to throw to him downfield.

Fin fans always wanted to compare him to Welker, but the difference is Welker could make things happen after the catch. Like the short hitch pass he took for a 99 yard touchdown to beat the Dolphins in that Monday nighter.

Blame the coaching staff and GM for that. They didn't acquire a legit outside receiver before the season began and the coaching staff forced Bess to run those routes.

Keep hoping .... Bess doubled Gibson's YAC last year.

Quote:
The biggest difference between the two came in their respective roles. Gibson played mostly outside, running only 39 out of 474 routes from the slot — just 8.2 percent. Bess ran 303 out of the slot, which is more than 70 percent of his total routes. Mike Wallace even had a higher slot percentage than Gibson at 12.2. Gibson is purely a possession receiver; Bess could keep his job by virtue of being the only slot receiver on the team. The biggest difference is evident in Gibson’s ability — or lack thereof — after the catch. He did not have much wiggle, as evidenced by the paltry two missed tackles he forced, and his 2.2 YAC/rec. was second-worst in the league. Bess isn’t known for his playmaking abilities, and the fact he lapped Gibson in this area is a bit startling. Of course, playing different roles had something to do with that.
