I would like to hear the fan reaction but it sounds like we got a pretty good player. I assume he fits the zone blocking scheme or maybe the staff knows he can learn it.

Young talented player who does fit the scheme plus he offers competition to Jerry which also knocks off another need

This guy is coming off a torn ACL on 11/25/13.

"Louis started 11 games last season before suffering a torn ACL in a Nov. 25 game against the Minnesota Vikings at Soldier Field. Louis was injured on an illegal hit by Vikings defensive end Jared Allen."

"Recklessly desperate" Ireland is at it again. :hithead:

He is not leaving any rock unturned. Love it.

I like it... it creates competition and at the very least it adds depth.

The more depth that can be obtained now, the more freedom they will have on draft day.

Here is a tweet from Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald discussing rumors of moving Jerry to right tackle.

Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley
Curious where all this John Jerry-to-right tackle talk came from. I wasn't at the owners meetings, so if Philbin brought it up, I missed it.

This from Rotoworld.com on Louis and when he will be ready.

Dolphins agreed to terms with OG Lance Louis, formerly of the Bears, on a one-year contract.
It's a strong signing for the free-spending Dolphins, and could be an indication RG John Jerry's time in the starting lineup — or perhaps with the team — is through. Save for Brandon Moore, Louis was the top guard still on the market. Louis is recovering from a torn left ACL, but is expected to be ready for training camp. With their interior line now set, the Dolphins need to figure out what they're going to do at tackle.

This fits the profile of what Ireland has been doing in free agency. None of the players signed are over 28 years old.

I wouldn't be surprised if they gave Jerry the chance to compete for the RT job. He's also a capable backup for LT and if I recall he did okay there when Long went down in 2011.

Probably rules out Cooper at the 12th pick unless Louis is nothing more than a depth signing.

Hopefully he can push Jerry or possibly win the job outright. Either way, I'd like to see us draft at least one interior offensive lineman this year.

Exactly.

Why not just draft a young and HEALTHY guy?

Lemme guess, because Adrian Peterson is superman, Lance Louis will be too? LOL

While I would argue that an ACL injury just isn't as bad as it used to be (players recover much more quickly now), I do 100% agree that we'd be better off drafting someone. I personally am a big fan of Barrett Jones from Alabama. The guy played left guard, center, and left tackle while at Alabama, and he played every position at a high level. I believe he projects as a 3rd round prospect because he's projected as a guard or center at the next level. I'm still hoping we take someone like Jones in the draft and let him compete with Jerry and this guy. Hopefully the deal is similar to Garrard's contract last year where we can evaluate him in camp and cut him before the season if he isn't up to par.

The Dolphins still probably will draft a OG, but probably later in the draft right now. He is on track to be ready by camp and I do believe the Dolphins had their doctors examine the knee before making the commitment.

It's a one year deal on a solid, young OG.

Ya, but this is a 300lb man we're talking about. You know how much of that weight bares down on those knees?

Recovery time is one thing with these players, the other matter is getting confident in doing the things they used to and putting weight on it. I still see the common theme when people talk about it as though most of them don't feel quite normal until year 2. We're talking about a man who tore his ACL at the end of November.

Did I miss something? Did Miami already have their draft???

Long ways to go yet folks. This is a starting lineman caliber talent, so lets hope he comes back 100% as he will help bolster a weak line. Check out the cheap shot on Lance Louis that got him injured.

From the Bears website.

They may still draft someone. He could just be to add depth. They do have 11 picks.

I would expect it. He is only on a 1 year deal

The Dolphins will probably draft a OG later in the draft, probably mid to late in the draft. But if Lance is ready by camp, he will be battling for if not the starter. He is not a depth guy.

Definitely agree. This kid is athletic and has been a starter. Fully expect him to push Jerry aside for the starting nod. I am quite sure Miami's medical staff understands his recovery progress to have made this deal.

Its been a few years now, but coming out of San Diego State, Louis ran a 4.76 40 at his pro day and at over 300 pounds.I know the lineman don't have to be sprinters, but that shows you he is athletic with that kind of speed/agility.

Probably because they are taking a flyer on him because he's injured. If he comes back 100%, we've got a solid RG.

Quote:
The Dolphins have warned RG John Jerry not to report to OTAs out of shape.
"It’ll be interesting to see," coach Joe Philbin said. "The big thing we said to him when he left is we want to see how much you weigh when you come back for the offseason program." Jerry reported to 2012 training camp at nearly 400 pounds, and has always struggled with conditioning. The Dolphins ratcheted up the pressure on Jerry by signing veteran Lance Louis. Jerry could lose his starting job even if he's lost the pounds.
