Purely speculation on Omar Kelly's part but I could definitely see it being an option if the tender on him is less than a first.

The Dolphins had a VERY high opinion of Dennis Pitta, a RFA, when he was coming out in the draft. I'm starting to think he's an option now.

He's tendered for a second now i like the option because he is a good tight end and will hurt the Ravens badly but for a 2nd? im not sure if he's worth that i rather Finley

He had 60 catches and 7 TDs last year. Will be 28 this season. He's bigger than Keller, not sure about the speed.

A 2nd rounder for a proven commodity versus a rookie project is fine with me.

I agree with Kelly, Miami is up to something because the TE position is too important to mess with in this offense.

Pitta runs a 4.6 40.

Here's the question you should ask yourselves.

If you took a tight end in the 2nd round and he caught 50 passes for 600 yards and 5 TDs a season, would you consider it a successful pick?

I think it would be. Unless of course we're trying to form an offense based on the TE then those numbers would fall short.

Depends on the plan i guess.

I disagree here. Finley has been plagued with injuries and inconsistencies. While Pitta hasn't exactly flashed a "dominant" play style, he's certainly been a solid TE who has a knack for finding holes in the defense and bringing down the tough catch.

With the acquisition of Wallace to be our deep threat and with the resigning of Hartline to be our short to intermediate guy, and with Bess on the roster as the slot receiver (for now), I think the role of a tight end in this offense would be as a complimentary player, not the main focus. But a guy to help keep the chains moving and be a threat in the red zone.

Is there much difference in using a 2nd to get Pitta or using a 2nd to draft a guy like Ertz at this point?

Just the money involved. Pitta would cost more. But that's the price you pay for getting proven productivity. Also, Ertz may not be there when we pick.

This board would be lit up like a Christmas tree in Dec. talking rookie of the year.

We could also look at Ed Dickson, who is also a Raven and is also tendered, but with a third round tender. He had a productive 2011, 54 catches for 528 yards and 5 TDs but dropped off last year with the emergence of Pitta.

This would be less of a sure thing than Pitta, though.

There are still teams with TE needs out there so I'm not as comfortable hoping one falls to Miami in the draft.

Miami already invested picks in Clay and Egnew, and its possible one develops. I'm on board for the proven commodity. Ravens are in a position of weakness with their cap and could prefer to gamble on a guy to match up with Dickinson.

Big question here is how much Pitta wants. Cook's signing screwed up the market, as did Fasano's.

Cleveland is said to be looking closely at Fred Davis and Brandon Myers. Why aren't we looking at these two?

Forget Davis .... injuries and PED's.

Myers is a meh option. He's the 2nd TE if you're even going to consider him.

We need THE guy as our #1 TE. Right now that's either Finley, Pitta, or a draftee. Personally I think Finley with Mike Wallace would be freakish.

I agree that adding Finley would make Tannehill's weapons absolutely freakish. Pairing Finley up with Keller would give the Dolphins a tandem similar to Gronkowski and Hernandez. One elite receiving tightend can give teams fits, but two will haunt their dreams. Teams just aren't built to handle two elite big men in the redzone. But Pitta would also be able to fill that role as well. He's an emerging talent himself. While not the explosive athlete Finley is, Pitta is still a formidable player with great skills.

Don't forget Clay! Unless you are an opposing defense, then by all means, forget him.

I'm really not sure what the obsession what Finley is... he's certainly not better than Keller... and neither of them have been overly impressive in their careers.

Here are their career stats:

FINLEY
Image

KELLER
Image

Here are the positional rankings for TE's in the passing game according to pro football focus:

2012
Keller >> 15th
Finley >> 41st

2011
Keller >> 30th
Finley >> 22nd

2010
Keller >> 48th
Finley >> Not Ranked

2009
Keller >> 45th
Finley >> 7th

So Finley does have the highest ranking of the two... but way back in 2009. Keller has the more recent positive ranking, but still lacked consistency. It's clear both would be a complimentary player... but to be honest based on what PFF has seen, neither of them are very dynamic pass catchers.

In 2011, Keller was ranked 6th in yards and 9th in receptions.

The reason PFF rates him lower is because they take into account catches per target...

But see... the QB has to be accurate... and he had Mark Sanchez throwing to him.
