Post Mike Wallace's Contract
Per Rotoworld

3/12/2013: Signed a five-year, $60 million contract. The deal contains $27 million guaranteed -- an $11 million signing bonus and each of Wallace's first two base salaries. Another $5 million is available through incentives. 2013: $1 million, 2014: $15 million, 2015: $9.85 million, 2016-2017: Under Contract, 2018: Free Agent

$11 million signing bonus amortizes to $2.2 million a year.

Base salaries

2013 - $1 million
2014 - $15 million
2015 - $9.85 million
2016 - $11.45 million
2017 - $11.45 million

Cap hit

2013 - $3.2 million
2014 - $17.2 million
2015 - $12.05 million
2016 - $13.65 million
2017 - $13.65 million

Cap Savings (if released or traded)

2015 - $3.25 million
2016 - $7.05 million
2017 - $9.25 million

Not taking the June 1st designation into account.

So it appears the Dolphins are taking advantage of a lot of 2014 cap space and then dropping Wallace's cap number for 2015-2017 so the team is not handicapped in future years.

Really big numbers and that 2014 number is huge. However, as with Ellerbe's contract, they got creative with the base salaries so that the cap isn't wrecked for 2015 and beyond.

No one will mind the contract as long as TDs roll in.

5-8 td's a year..Asking for more than that would be a little too high on the expectation.

He has a roll to open other things up and make a big play a couple times a week.

Indicates to me the Fins are thinking about what they hope is RT's next contract.

Good observation, check my 2014 cap thread.

Chess, not checkers.

The entire Dolphins WR staff only accounted for 3 TDs all last season.

It's not just about his own TD totals, but how much he can free up other WRs.

At least I hope so. I heard the same about B Marshall.

Well there are probably two answers to your question. The first answer is did you read all of the 1st post that Rich has on this thread? A logical reason is mentioned there.

Some people only hear or acknowledge what they want to.

I also addressed his question here:

Quote:
Contracts for Wallace and Ellerbe decrease in cap value for 2015, making it easier to resign other valuable players or bring in an additional free agent or two during that offseason, barring the Dolphins going nuts again in 2014 (which I don't see as realistic).

You shouldn't be dipping into the FA market for major acquisitions every year. You will never have a TEAM if you do that (and you seriously have to question the talent evaluation process).

2014 should be about draft picks, resigning and/or extending guys and a few minor FA acquisitions. Therefore you shouldn't need huge amounts of cap space.

But freeing up some for 2015 will allow Ireland to do things like rework/extend RT's contract, or look for a FA to come in and replace him (hopefully not). And to bring in a major FA in a key spot.

IMO, Ireland is doing just about everything perfectly right now.

Guys, I just wasted some of my morning deleting the back and forth crap in this thread. Take the childish arguments to PM or go away.
