Thoughts?

Quote:
Dud: You spend a high pick on a rookie, then it’s likely at some point you’re going to want to see what you’ve got. Well, the Dolphins got a good long look at Jonathan Martin (-22.0) and they’ll know he’s got a long way to go before he becomes the player they drafted him to be.

I think the fact that Miami resigned Hartline and Moore means they are moving on from Long and seeking a less expensive OT through free agency and the draft. But I'm not sure I would call Martin a dud. He definitely got a lot of playing time and Miami knows he needs to get stronger. Lets see what he did over the offseason to improve his upper strength. I do hope Miami finds a way to land Eric Winston as he would help.

He's a rookie, he's cheap... and he started. I call that a win in my book.

The experience he gained was good Ski, but he struggled and got bull rushed on a regular basis. Cheap means nothing if he does not get BETTER and get's Ryan Tannehill crushed on his blind side if he is the guy that will be moved to OLT.

He needs to improve A LOT.

The concern I have from my perspective is that Martin appeared "soft" in my opinion.

Reminds me a lot of when Wade Smith first came out, of course over time, Smith became a starter in the NFL and a serviceable one at that, so perhaps it will take Martin time, but right now I don't see something hard nosed in him...yet.

He did?
I thought he was decent for a rookie who got no offseason conditioning, played RT for most of his rookie year and was thrown into a position after an all pro was injured. Let's see how he does in camp before we can judge him as a LT in the league.

Like Smith it most likely will be with another team. Smith BTW made the Pro Bowl this year, after a very solid 2 Yrs in KC followed by 2 more very good yrs in Houston. Miami gave up on him far to quickly, which IMO is their norm.

Martin had a really rough start to the year. In that Texans game in particular he looked overmatched. However, as the season progressed he did play much better. This team can win a title with someone Martin's caliber playing OT, they can't win it with the current crop of WR/TE.

What's sad is the fans give up on players 2 weeks into their rookie seasons. It takes te team 2-3 years.

Despite your hilarious response, he still sucked. All you have to do is look at the number of sacks and hurries he gave up. A more powerful argument than what the heck you posted in your reply there...

And I still say he played a lot better at left tackle than right tackle. A cheap way to replace Jake Long would be to bring in Eric Winston at right tackle and leave Martin at left tackle.

Let's just hope that he shows improvement in his second year. Vernon Carey couldn't crack the starting lineup in his rookie season as he was a slow developer. He turned out to be a very good offensive lineman for us.

Sign Winston, draft a guard to replace Incognito and our O Line is set!

I see people saying he "played much better".

Much better? A lot better? That's an exaggeration. This kid never did anything "much better" at any point in 2012.

Dave, can you please pull up the game by game analysis by Pro Football Focus? We'll see how much better Martin got as the season went on, because I remember him getting wrecked by the 49ers when he moved to left tackle and I seem to recall him giving up a ton of hurries both on the right and left side. And I also seem to recall him being one of the lowest ranked starting tackles for the 2012 season.

So what? That was one game. Martin was regularly getting planted on his butt throughout 2012.

Dolphins OT Jonathan Martin's 47 quarterback hurries were the most among offensive tackles in 2012.

After moving to left tackle in early December, Martin allowed 17 hurries in just under five games. Jake Long had allowed 10 hurries in just over 11 games. With Long seemingly determined to land a market-setting deal, the Dolphins could have major pass protection issues in 2013.

Thanks Rock.

This should be included in every post posted on this forum for the next month... so that it can sink in for those who think he wasn't that bad.

I get that he was a rookie and that he could improve (he definitely can't get worse) but he has a long way to go towards being a good tackle on EITHER side.

In 312 snaps as MIA starting LT Jonathan Martin allowed 2 sacks, 2 QB hits & 17 QB hurries. 4 sacks, 2 hits & 30 hurries in 741 snaps at RT.

So here is how the percentages break out.

Right tackle

Sacks allowed: 0.53% of snaps

QB hits allowed: 0.27% of snaps
QB hurries allowed: 4.05% of snaps

Left tackle

Sacks allowed: 0.64% of snaps

QB hits allowed: 0.64% of snaps
QB hurries allowed: 5.45% of snaps

Yeah... clearly he was much better at left tackle.

He played consistent all season. Not really improving much, but his level of play didn't fall off when he went from the right side to the left.

giving up 6 sacks in a season doesn't sound too bad. There are teams that give up 6 sacks in a game.
And I'm sure alot of the hurries were aided by our lowly receiver core not getting open quickly.

It's not just sacks, it's hurries as well. If we had a statue back there for a QB there would've been a lot more sacks.

I knew someone would try to pin the blame of his performance on some other aspect of the team though.

everything works in symbiosis in a timing offense. With a year under his belt I expect Tannehill to make quicker decisions. I expect Miami to have better receivers who get open more regularly, I expect a legitimate downfield tight end threat instead of fasano. The same way defensive backs jobs are made easier by pass rushers, same goes for offensive tackles. They are helped out when the passing game is in sync with the QB and receivers.

Right.

Every player at every position will make a jump then next year according to this theory.

I would hope that the offense as a whole would get drastically better in year 2 of the Philbin era. Especially if he and Ireland want to keep their jobs.
