:)

$8 million for a cornerback who cannot catch interceptions. Yeah, right.

Quote:
Free agent CB Smith wants $8-10M per season

Free agent CB Sean Smith is expected to seek $8-10 million annually on the open market.

Smith and his agent anticipate a deal somewhere between Brandon Carr (five years, $50 million) and Jason McCourty (five years, $43 million). Per the Miami Herald, the Dolphins don't believe Smith is worth that much and for good reason. Although very physically gifted and only 25, Smith struggles versus smaller, quicker receivers, and Pro Football Focus charted him with more combined first downs and touchdowns allowed than any NFL cornerback in 2012.

Cornerback was already high on the list, but with Sean Smith wanting that type of money, I expect him to be gone.

Sean has the potential to be a special player, but so far Miami has only seen little previews of that. He is quite simply not worth that type of money.

Right now, cornerback has become one of THE priority positions to be addressed in the draft or free agency.

Really hoping Milliner falls to us.

this is why i would give away Odrick for a 2nd or high 3rd. Grab 2 corners in the top 90 picks. This draft is strong at corner in the top 120 picks.

We want 4-6 picks a year Sean...really? So in other words, 2-3 will work.

Good luck finding a GM stupid enough to give you that much Sean.

Good luck Sean. The way teams spend and make poor decisions though, I will not be shocked if someone does pay him.

Miami has (2) 2nd round picks and (2) 3rd round picks. There is no need to weaken the defense by trading away a talented DE/DT that you still have right to at a relatively cheap cost.

Miami lacked foresight in trading Davis. I was afraid of when they made that trade it would not only weaken the sec, but also put Miami over a barrel with Smith..

Smith's agent know this.

The more I look at the trade, the more I have come to your side on this argument. I was very disappointed in Vontae and the fact that he came to camp so out of shape was unprofessional. Other factors that came out made what was going on with Vontae disappointing.

With that in mind, he still performed on a far more consistent basis than Sean Smith and they had him under contract for a year longer.

sure there is. that would give us 6 picks in the first 3 rounds,....for WR, OT, CB, DE, CB and TE
we need picks!!!

Well if he is nothing special, then why would a team pay his contract & give up a 2nd or a high 3rd for him?

No. We need quality players. Not a quantity of mediocre Day 2 guys; half of which won't pan out.

better fit for them. 5-technique defensive ends are hard to find in a 34 defense.

I like Mike Jenkins also...he has a chip on his shoulder and has a lot to prove next year. Hopefully Ireland still has some connections in big D to get some inside info on him.

Cary Williams is a bit of a hothead. But then again, we need a guy like that on defense.

Dolphins CB Sean Smith could be gone

With a month to go before NFL free agency, there isn't a lot of serious talk yet, but one name getting some play already is Miami CB Sean Smith. Two NFL execs said they expect at least a half-dozen teams to pursue Smith and figure his average salary will surpass $8 mill per, which could take him out of range for Miami despite its large pool of cap space. The price could get to $10 mill per, along the lines of Dallas CB Brandon Flowers and St. Louis CB Cortland Finnegan last year in free agency. Smith isn't a great ballhawk (5 INT in four years), but he's a big corner (6-foot-3) and works effectively in press coverage.

Like I've been saying, I think the franchise tag is a serious option. They paid 12.5 million to keep Soliai around for a year. They'll spend 10 million for Smith.

I've been easier on Ireland than most. But if he franchises Smith I'll call for him to be fired that very moment (but I'll take it back if the move is so they can trade him for a 1st round pick)

I hope some team gives Smith $10m a year, just so long as it isn't the Dolphins. They will feel the salary cap pain of vastly overpaying a mediocre player. And they will give the Dolphins a compensatory pick.

RT@oose90: If Sean Smith doesn't return what do the Dolphins do at cornerback?ยป Probably draft one, and I'm told there will be good, cheaper cornerbacks on the market once this round of salary cap cuts takes place.

MY TAKE: Everyone knows I'm a Sean Smith fan, but re-signing this former second-round pick isn't a major priority in my opinion. And placing the franchise tag on him isn't an option.

The price for veteran starting cornerbacks in the NFL is roughly $6 million a season, and considering Smith has been the biggest bargain on the team for four seasons look for him to chase the money. Even though Smith's performance for the Dolphins hasn't been steady there will likely be a market for him because of his measurables (6-foot-3), experience (four year starter) and durability (has never missed a game).

If you look at Kevin Coyle's history in Cincinnati he's used draftees and stopgap players to build respectable Bengals secondaries, and I'm guessing that will be Miami's approach because they don't seem eager to re-sign Smith before free agency starts.

Cary Williams, Keenan Lewis, Aqib Talib, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Derek Cox, Leodis McKevlin, Tony Carter, Mike Jenkins and Tracy Porter are the young (under 30), promising cornerbacks competing with Smith for their share of the free agent market. There are also a couple former Pro Bowlers, players like Carolina's Chris Gamble and Philadelphia's Nnamdi Asomugha, who will likely get released because of their bloated salaries.

No matter what route Miami goes they will have options at cornerbacks if Smith leaves. Richard Marshall, Nolan Carroll and Dimitri Patterson as the top three returners at the position and it would be wise to get younger and cheaper in the backend. The 2013 draft features 11 cornerbacks who are viewed as theis draft's top 100 prospects. Selecting one early (the first three rounds) would give the coaches someone young to develop, which is needed.

Let Smith hit the market. When offers come pouring in from teams, and the price dips down to around $5-6M a season (what I think his value will be in the open market), then put down a serious offer and complete the deal.

I agree with everyone that Smith isn't worth $8-10M a season, but we should still try to retain the guy if possible. No sense in losing another high draft pick and no sense in creating another hole.

The Fins may hold Marshall out of early-offseason workouts as a precaution, but it sounds like he's pretty close to 100 percent. Marshall is currently the top corner on Miami's roster signed for 2013, as Sean Smith is a free agent. Expect Marshall to open the season as a starter barring something unforeseen.

Tell me that isn't a depressing thought. Something tells me the Dolphins add another cornerback in free agency and drafts one.

This is just a classic case of teams knowing their players best & why big name free agents do not excite me. Simply put while addressing a need does not mean you filled that need.
Like in the case of most free agents , the Dolphins (current team) know this guy is not worth his asking price. When you have had a guy for a few years you know if he is average , better than that or elite. This guy has done nothing to prove he is anything but an average player hoping the allure of a team adding a new name thus providing a false hope , over values him so he can ink a big contract.
I hope we do not over pay to keep him.

I'm definitely with you on this. Sometimes you have to let your own free agents go if they want more than they are really worth, but usually you have someone waiting in the wings via a previous draft pick. The salary cap makes the draft so important. If you have to go to free agency constantly to fill holes then you need to revisit your team's draft evaluation process.

Back to Sean Smith, I think he's out of position, myself. He can't hang with the smaller and quicker receivers that he has to cover. He'd be a killer safety. Unfortunately for the safety position, franchise money jumps $3 million from a safety to a cornerback.

What if we let Smith go, signed a free agent, and drafted a pair of cornerbacks in the first three rounds? What if we drafted someone like Milliner from Alabama, and then someone like Amerson from NC State in the mid to late 2nd? Or even the Honey Badger in the mid to late 3rd?

Then we would start Milliner and someone like Talib, Cason, Williams, etc would start across from him. After that we could let Marshall, Patterson, and the other draft pick battle for the nickel and dime slots. The loser would be depth.

While losing Smith wouldn't be ideal, it wouldn't be the end of the world. Instead of overpaying him, we could simply wind up paying a better player what he's worth.

WK - your last 2 posts (this thread & the other) has so many what if's it is mind boggling.
I can just say , what if Brady blows out his ACL gain in week one. Then we will win the division & Ireland & Philbin will be geniuses.

and we don't have to get Milliner to field a good secondary. guys like Blidi Wreh-Wilson, Jamar Taylor and Jordan Poyer are all hard-nosed corners in round 2.....and Leon McFadden and Darius Slay in the 3rd round having starting caliber talent. It's less about having 1 all-star corner and more about having a nice group of 3 or 4 to blanket a spread offense.

I'm on the record as wanting to sign Cary Williams who is a rising corner and ballhawk, and then draft Jamar Taylor and Darius Slay for example. plus we have Marshall and Patterson for quality depth.

Yes, we need a cornerback....maybe two if we let Smith go. Our defense was pretty damn good last year though, despite having to rely on Smith and whoever wasn't injured or who we just acquired from the waiver wire on the other side. The real problem has been our pitiful offense. I can see Miami drafting a top CB prospect and still being able to fill all the other gaping holes. Keeping Smith should be a priority. He can test the market and will probably not get the money he wants. After that, Miami should sign him. He isn't one of the best CB's in the league, but it is rare to have a CB tandem consisting of two elite talents. That would be a luxury on a team with so many holes in its roster.

If we end up spending two top picks to replace Smith and effectively, Vontae Davis, then I think you get another fine illustration of how awful Miami is at evaluating, acquiring and grooming talent.

Not that Miami has been good at evaluating talent, but this is not a good example of it.

Smith and Davis were both drafted in 2009 by Sparano and Ireland. These are not Philbin's guys so I can see how he might be willing to part ways. Vontae Davis was an under achiever. Showing up to practice out of shape or hung over. But you are right about Miami missing on the draft. That's why I think this is Ireland's last draft if they don't make the playoffs.
