Bill Polian ranks Wallace, Jennings, and Bowe
Quote: 2. Polian is a rare public NFL voice. He's credible as the builder of three teams that went to the Super Bowl (Buffalo, Carolina, Indianapolis). Plus, he's out of the league a year, so his information and thoughts are relevant.
He graded NFL free agents for this off-season, and the most interesting was his ranking of wide receivers the Dolphins might chase. First, Brian Hartline wasn't in the list, showing an omission on Polian's part more than any statement.
Among the Dolphins three most-discussed receiver targets, he gave Mike Wallace an A grade and B grades to Greg Jennings and Dwyane Bowe. Here were his comments:
* Wallace: "A good route runner, has good instincts and typically has good hands, but he's small and you worry about injury. Inconsistency in the past also is a concern. Pittsburgh didn't reach a deal with him, which will make some teams wary, but this league is always looking for WRs with speed who can take the top off a defense -- and he can do that.
* Jennings, "will be a big name, but this is the classic question mark: How much do you pay a guy who will turn 30 at the start of the 2013 season and is coming off of two injury-plagued seasons?
* Bowe, "is certain to be one of the names all the gurus will be talking about, but he has inconsistent hands. The QB situation in Kansas City doesn't affect him that much; you have to catch the ball when it's thrown to you. Bowe will intrigue some people, and others will shy away." http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miam ... 9559.story

Yeah, but WK13 said we shouldn't go after Wallace, and I trust him more than a guy who has actually built successful NFL teams...

Boldin is said to being cut for salary. Or atleast available by trade.

Imagine Wallace and Boldin. That in itself would make a great off-season.

Re: Bill Polian ranks Wallace, Jennings, and Bowe
I don't think Boldin's going anywhere... he's Flaccos favorite target in the redzone you gotta think they'll come to an agreement somehow.
If he did get cut there'd be a lot of teams jumping on that bandwagon.

Wallace, Boldin and Bess would be an excellent trio........draft a top tight end in the first two rounds and we should be set.

For the honor that it is to play here maybe Jennings , Bowe and Wallace take less to all come here and then we have our big 3 like the Heat.

In order to have a Big 3 like the Heat. We'd need Megatron. Larry Fitzgerald and Wes Welker.

Rich wrote: Yeah, but WK13 said we shouldn't go after Wallace, and I trust him more than a guy who has actually built successful NFL teams... Where does Bill Polian say the Miami Dolphins should get Mike Wallace? While I did catch the part about him being a good receiver who has question marks due to him being rather small and also not reaching a deal with the Steelers (something that would make teams wary of him), I must have completely missed the part where he endorsed Wallace to the Dolphins and said it was a match made in heaven. I also missed the part that he's worth big time $$$ and that Polian would sign him if he were available. Polian isn't saying anything earth shattering here. Wallace is a good receiver, and Polian is acknowledging it. I never said Wallace wasn't a good receiver myself, I merely said I didn't think he would be a good player for the Dolphins to target. Mainly because of his holdout, the fact that the Steelers have seemingly given up on signing him, the fact that he's coming off injury, and because he reportedly wants a huge contract. I think Wallace is a good receiver, I just don't think he's elite and worth throwing big money at. While he has elite speed, the rest of his game isn't anything special in my opinion. Or at least not $10M a season special. Personally, I hope the Dolphins draft a pair of receivers early and call it good.

Welker isn't worth 12 million...He drops alot of passes and can't catch a pass over his short little arms. When a good team wants to shut him down they do...He is a complimentary player They can have him.

I agree with you Kev, Welker continues to put up big numbers, but if a team puts up $12 mil/yr, they're paying him for what he did as opposed to what he'll do.

We should be wary of the Steelers, a team famous for letting free agents walk, not reach a deal with Wallace, but should not be concerned at all about the Packers not resigning a 30 year receiver who is developing a pattern of injuries. WK13 Logic 101.

Re: Bill Polian ranks Wallace, Jennings, and Bowe
I don't think its a question of Miami trying to sign Wallace, they will, its a question of how many teams are competing for his services. I think he's the one guy who can be picky about where he wants to go. The markets for Jennings and Bowe might not be as big as some think. If we can sit here and point out flaws on a fan site I'm quite certain the GMs and scouts have recognized the buyer beware label.
Bowe is the guy to be wary of.

ESPN Scouts Inc did a write up comparing Keenan Allen to Anquan Boldin. I'd post it but it requires Insider. They included Da'rick Rodgers from Tenn Tech too, but I believe he has serious attitude issues. I know some guys here don't prefer Allen, but he does seem like a playmaking possession receiver in the mold of Boldin.

Re: Bill Polian ranks Wallace, Jennings, and Bowe
Ok heres some food for thought: approx estimates of career numbers for full 16 game seasons. I reviewed their career stats, and made eye ball assumptions here, lets take these figures as ball parks and not critique where i came up with them from, this is just for arguments sake.
Larry Fitzgerald (age 29): 1000-1300 yards, 6-10 TDs, 75-90 receptions= $10 million and PICKS!!
Mike Wallace (age 26) 1000-1200 yards, 7-10 TDs and 50-60 receptions= $8-10 million...
Jennings (age 29): 950-1150 yards, 5-10 TDs and 60-75 receptions= $7-9 million
Bowe (age 28): 900-1100 yards, 5-7 TDs, and 70-80 receptions = $6-8 million
Welker (age 31): 900-1100 yards, 5 TDs, 90-110 receptions = $6-8 million
Boldin (age 32): 800-1000 yards, 4-5 TDs, 60-75 receptions = $5-6 million
Hartline (age 26): 800-900 yards, 2-3 TDs, 60-70 receptions = $4 million
Randy Moss (age 35): 500-600 yards, 3-5 TDs, 30-50 receptions = $3-4 million
Cruz (age 26): 1000-1200 yards, 10 TDs, 80 receptions = $5-7 million AND DRAFT PICKS!!
Titus Young (age 23): 500-700 yards, 5-7 TDs, 40-60 receptions= $3-5 million
Ok so here are a majority of the options out there. Assuming that Bess (under contract) will play slot, we will need to find 2 starters for the flanker positions using FA and/or draft. I would hope Miami would be willing to invest at least $10 million in its pursuit, maybe more (closer to $12 leaning on the FA), maybe less (about $8 leaning more on the draft), but lets assume a high 1st round pick would be in the neighborhood of $2 million for year one with the new rookie wage scale. a 1st rounder plus an $8 million dollar FA seems about money wise, maybe we expect more, maybe Ireland will be stinger but i hope the former. My thoughts would be...
1.) Im still for swinging a second rounder for Fitzgerald and drafting a WR high in the draft as an option, proven commodity there, and some one to groom, the age is about right, and it would seem logical (especially if a packaged deal for Odrick instead of a pick may be possible) (approx $12 million)
2.) Retain Hartline and sign Jennings (probably the least sexy pairing out there, but this would keep continuity with Tanne, and bring in a player that would hit the ground running in system fit. If Hartline can be retained for $4.5 million, and Jennings brought in at $7.5 million, we are at the $12 million threshold)
3.) The economical win now, high risk move: Re-sign Hartline, bring in Moss, and Boldin (if all three could be had at about $12 million a season..... Hartline $4 home town discount, Boldin @ $4.5 just short of his current, and Moss for $3.5 which would definitely be over paying) This could give a nice 4 wide approach with Bess, and would bring immediate production barring character issues (Moss) but age would be a factor here
4.) Draft 2 and call it a day
5.) other combinations
The way I look at it, I like Wallace's speed, but I am not enamored with his receptions, hes 3 catches and done every game, been a victim of his production fantasy wise for 3 years...
I like Jenning's familiarity, but not his age, nor his injury history. I think he could be a solution, but we probably would only get 2 good years out of him before he becomes donald driver like
I like Bowe, but not his butter fingers. I think he could have been had before the trade deadline for a 2nd round pick, and we could have worked on an immediate and cheaper contract then, so I have a feeling he isnt even being considered
I like Hartline, if and only if a red zone threat is paired with him. Re-Signing hartline means Wallace for the big splash, or Jennings for the familiarity, either option works, but the latter is probably not gonna be as well received as the fan base would like.
Either way, I wrote this up to offer opinions other than who we like best and why. or who is older and older is worse. Or who suffered from bad QB play. This was more a basic idea of stats brought to the table and the economics in simple form. let me know what you guys think

Re: Bill Polian ranks Wallace, Jennings, and Bowe
I prefer Bowe out of the free agents. Talented and relatively young. Has been playing on a crap team with crappy QB's and still is productive. I am leery of anybody the Steelers are letting go of...
Draft a top WR in April. If we can add a quality tight end, then fine.....but Fasano can certainly hold the fort down while the team fills other gaping holes in its roster.

Arizona has a new coach and potentially a new QB. Making both of their lives easier will be the first priority and Larry Fitzgerald is the answer to that. If Miami wanted to send a pair of 1st rounders and Odrick then perhaps Arizona would listen.

What are you talking about Jammer? Why wouldn't Arizona trade their franchise player, who is also unbelievable in the community and is the only reason the national media spends two seconds thinking about the Cardinals, right before drafting a young QB?
I think we should swing a 3rd for Megatron...Maybe give Indy a couple of 2nd round picks for Luck?

Doesn't mean he will be a bad pick, but in Rd. 2/3 IMO his talent is worth the gamble. jammer wrote: I know some guys here don't prefer Allen, but he does seem like a playmaking possession receiver in the mold of Boldin. Allen would be fine, but to land him Miami will need to use the No. 12 pick & frankly I do not think he will be worth that high of a 1st. If Miami goes WR in Rd. 1 then they should try & trade back. I personally do not see a huge difference between some of the top guys.

I know Miami did not have Tom Brady during these 6 seasons and perhaps people will knock all the underneath catches, but this guy has been a player. Hard to question his ability to have added value moving the chains for the Pats over the past 6 years. I will also add that he has been a thorn in Miami's side ever since he left.
If Mike Wallace is the "best" in free agency, then I hope Miami goes after him. This team needs help in the worst way.
I am not suggesting him as an option, just playing devil's advocate to those that think he isn't all that.
