Dolphins LG Richie Incognito is a candidate for offseason release.
Incognito is due $4 million in 2013 and doesn't have a long-term future with the Dolphins. He won't be guaranteed a roster spot if Miami upgrades their offensive line in the draft or free agency. Pro Football Focus graded Incognito as the No. 24 overall guard in their year-end ratings.
That's what the 'experts' keep saying, but according to Pro Football Focus, Incognito improved his play in the new offense. He was ranked 35th in 2011 but improved to 24th in 2012. Green Bay's starting left guard, Jeff Lang, was ranked 32nd in 2012.
Incognito is a solid lineman, if he can continue to improve and get better in the new zone blocking system, then he can have a future with the Dolphins. How long of a future depends completely on him. He struggled early, but did improve as the season wore on. That is encouraging to see.
I would love to see a scenario where he is retained and moved over to right guard. A situation where we sign someone like Levitre from Buffalo to play left guard and then move Incognito to right guard would really upgrade our interior line and keep teams from pressuring Tannehill up the middle. Then we'd only have to worry about who's playing tackle.
I think that if we're able to sign someone like Levitre, and then draft someone in the first couple of rounds to play right tackle, that we'll be set as far as the offensive line is concerned. Or, if we decide to retain Long and sign someone like Levitre, we could then just draft depth in the mid to later rounds.
Either way we're set.
