Post OT - ESPN drops Hank Williams song after Obama comment
We have a political section, but, I am going to post this in the Dolphins forum and then move it to the political forum if it gets too political.

Quote:
ESPN drops Hank Williams song after Obama comment

Bristol, Conn. — ESPN pulled Hank Williams Jr.'s classic intro song from its broadcast of Monday night's NFL game after the country singer famous for the line "Are you ready for some football?" used an analogy to Adolf Hitler in discussing President Barack Obama.

In an interview Monday morning on Fox News' "Fox & Friends," Williams, unprompted, said of Obama's outing on the links with House Speaker John Boehner: "It'd be like Hitler playing golf with (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu."

Asked to clarify, Williams said, "They're the enemy," adding that by "they" he meant Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

Anchor Gretchen Carlson later said to him, "You used the name of one of the most hated people in all of the world to describe, I think, the president." Williams replied, "Well, that is true. But I'm telling you like it is."

"While Hank Williams Jr. is not an ESPN employee, we recognize that he is closely linked to our company through the open to 'Monday Night Football,'" the network said in a statement. "We are extremely disappointed with his comments, and as a result we have decided to pull the open from tonight's telecast."

It's his opinion and has nothing to do with ESPN. This polictical correct society is killing us. He's right, Obama and Boner are total opposites.

Yahoo! said "Williams compares Obama to Hitler"

Way to totally mess up the quote. He wasn't comparing Obama to Hitler...

Nope he was comparing the meeting bewtween Boner and Obama to Hitler meeting with the Prime Minister of Isreal. Dumb analogy, but not enough to warrant all this drama. It's his opinion, this country is going down a slipperyslope with all this kind of BS.

Williams called the President of the USA the largest mass murderer in recent history.

Then he called the President and Vice President "the enemy".

A lot of conservatives have been off the rail for some time.

Liberals protest, Conservatives plant bombs and try to shoot you.

Bush started a unneeded war in Iraq which killed and injured 1,000's of Americans, over a Million people of Iraq have died and millions more forced to leave the county.

He is the only president to cut taxes during a war

Sorry, no getting started on a rant here.

Peaceful liberals like the "Weathermen Underground" of the 60's and 70's.
"Weatherman, known colloquially as the Weathermen and later the Weather Underground Organization (abbreviated WUO), was an American radical left organization. It originated in 1969 as a faction of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS)[2] composed for the most part of the national office leadership of SDS and their supporters. Their goal was to create a clandestine revolutionary party for the violent overthrow of the US government.[3]

With revolutionary positions characterized by Black separatist rhetoric,[2] the group conducted a campaign of bombings through the mid-1970s, including aiding the jailbreak and escape of Timothy Leary. The "Days of Rage", their first public demonstration on October 8, 1969, was a riot in Chicago timed to coincide with the trial of the Chicago Seven. In 1970 the group issued a "Declaration of a State of War" against the United States government, under the name "Weather Underground Organization" (WUO). The bombing attacks mostly targeted government buildings, along with several banks. Most were preceded by evacuation warnings, along with communiqués identifying the particular matter that the attack was intended to protest. For the bombing of the United States Capitol on March 1, 1971, they issued a communiqué saying it was "in protest of the US invasion of Laos." For the bombing of the Pentagon on May 19, 1972, they stated it was "in retaliation for the US bombing raid in Hanoi." For the January 29, 1975 bombing of the United States Department of State Building, they stated it was "in response to escalation in Vietnam."[

Learn your history before you spout off.

Hitler and Netanyahu are not on opposite sides. They weren't even leaders at the same time. Israel never existed in Hitler's life time, and saying they are on opposite sides just because one is Jewish and the other killed Jews is asinine. They're not on opposite sides -- their paths never even crossed.

Hitler is one of the most evil men in the history of mankind and mentioning Obama's name in the same sentence as Hitler is simply inexcusable, no matter where you fall on the political spectrum. Same goes for liberals that compare Bush to Hitler. Just completely off the reservation.

Saying Obama and Boehner are on opposite sides, or that Obama is "the enemy," is exactly what is wrong with this country. Let's cut the hyperbole folks. Obama and Boehner disagree politically. That's it. They may like each other personally, that is possible you know. And like it or not, these two men need to cooperate and cross party lines or this country will not get anything done for the next year and a half.

All this hate from both sides... everybody just needs to relax. Obama doesn't hate this country. He is not a socailist. He's not out to ruin the United States. He wants what is best for this country, just like George W. Bush did. They're both patriots. They just may have a different idea of what they think is best than you do. Let's cut the crap and do a job for once. Sheesh.

I most certainly do not like Obama or his positions, but your post is spot on. Kudos to you for cutting through the bs.
The comment was dumb, but I agree with others, we are too PC in this country. He is entitled to his opinions, even if they aren't fashionable. As for ESPN boycotting him, I think it is about as silly as when they did it to Rush Limbaugh. His (Rush) statement may have been lacking tact, but it wasn't meant to be a racist comment, but was certainly twisted that way because of who he was.

I will say though, I don't believe he directly referred to Obama as Hitler. Though he called Obama they enemy, he never specifically identified any of those personalities to one another. He generally referred to the involved parties as being polar opposites, just as a Jewish Leader and Hitler would have been polar opposities. I think the fact that they lived in different times, while technically correct, is a bit semantical; bottom line is they wouldn't be friends.

From a business perspective I see exactly why ESPN did it. Even if they didn't care what Hank said, some of their sponsors or someone on the Board or "fill in any more important money donors here" may have been offended by it and thus it could affect their relationships with that party.

This was purely a business move, and the right one in my opinion.

It's an analogy. It's intended to make a point, not be precise or anally retentive. And often times, analogies can be exaggerative for purposes of having an impact.

Did you even see the comments when he made them?

No, you heard it in the media and based on the context you've been fed, you've made a judgement.

THAT is what is wrong with this country. People being swayed by soundbites rather than facts.

Just a family tradition....

..zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....

being 0-4 sucks.

It's simple. Yes, you have a right to free speech.

No, that doesn't mean others are forced to hear it, condone it, or agree with it.

ESPN is a business. They did not condone it. They have a right to not air anything they don't want to. End of story.

It's not about PC. Any time you talk about the President and Hitler in the same sentence, you better hope your analogy holds more water than this. Stupid move. You have a right to say stupid things, but it doesn't take away from them being stupid.

What was this guy doing being asked political questions anyway. Fox knew he was gonna do something like this. A huge ratings coup for them. Shouldn't this guy have been on CMT (or whatever the country music channel is) Maybe ESPN will get a TI version of the song now.
I never really watched that Fox show in the morning. I always got the impression the woman sitting in the middle was a puppet with the 2 guys pulling her strings to make her talk & move.

If he had just said that quote and then backed it up with the whole opposite sides defense, then yeah, it wouldn't have been as bad.

It was this:

"Who's the enemy?"

Hank (shouting) "OBAMA!!!!!!"

That got ESPN rightfully upset. All this talk over what his horrible, outdated, inaccurate and poor attempt at an analogy is missing the point.

I don't agree..that's limiting free speech and assuming that we bow down to the President. I didn't vote for him, and he's put us all in a terrible situation. To ask me to speak kindly of him in public just because some other idiots voted him to office is completely unfair and bordering fascism.

I'm not talking about limiting free speech, all I'm saying is if someone, anyone, compares a US president to Hitler, there will be public repercussions. Presidents are bound by certain checks to prevent any of them from being anything close to Hitler. The vetting process also ensure nobody of such low character would ever hold the office. I agree Obama sucks, but that does not mean his intentions are not good. Nobody gets in that office to deliberately cause harm or 'suck'. It would be Un-American to say you couldn't talk trash about the President, but it is also Un-American to compare any of them to Hitler. No President is the "enemy". They are opposition at wost.

I agree that there will be repercussions, but to assume that there isn't corruption in the political system is just living in bliss. Who's to say that we won't some day vote in a guy that is comparable to Hitler? It's possible...these guys are pieces of garbage in it for the money. I don't think it's unAmerican to call out a President, especially if he starts spouting off propaganda and starting wars....

Do you think people in Germany knew Hitler was Hitler? People have to challenge the status quo, they have to challenge and question motives.....or else things like what happened in Germany in the 1930s will happen.

That said, I don't think OBAMA is comparable to Hitler, but I certainly don't agree with the notion that he's in there help Americans. He's in there to take care of his agenda, which is put together by his party, which is put together by whatever corporation owns them.

No, he did this:

Anchor Gretchen Carlson later said to him, "You used the name of one of the most hated people in all of the world to describe, I think, the president."

Williams replied, "Well, that is true. But I'm telling you like it is."

Then he said he was the "enemy."

The above is bad enough.

Sheesh.

Well said.

And I couldn't care less about the political opinion of a country singer.

One thing being missed is Hank's assertion that having political rivals meet is somehow stupid and wrong. I wonder how he expects anything to get done without compromise on both sides.

I agree; that assertion is very limited.

Even if Hitler was elected, there is no way he/it could do what Hitler did. Our government is set up that way.

Think what you want about Obama, but let's not re-write history. Barack Obama did not start any of the wars this country is in right now.

And he is not the first to use "propaganda" as you call it. It's called a press secretary, and every president since Eisenhower has had one.

Of course there is corruption in the political systems. It's a problem on both sides of the aisle. As I said in my earlier post, Obama is not an evil man. He just disagrees with you. I think we can all agree Hitler is an evil man. Therefore, comparing Obama and Hitler is just silly. I agree, calling out a president is by its very definition AMERICAN. It's one of the great things about this country. And if you don't like a president, you can vote for his opponent next time. But comparing any person to Hitler is demeaning. Unless that person is equally evil.

Guantanamo Bay? Heck, even during the 40's the US set up its own concentration camps for Asians. What about the extermination of Native Americans?
Right now they are suppressing gays (although progress is being made). We're a world power that is policing everyone and saying that everyone should do what we do, or else.
Pretty sure that was the rhetoric of Nazi Germany. People look at Nazi Germany as some sort of fictional tale, but this stuff is happening every day, we just choose to believe that the Nazis were the only true evil because of what we've been taught and how the media has portrayed it...it's become cliche even.
