Can McCarron be a better version of Pennington?

Post Re: 2014 QB Prospects
I don't know what to make of McCaron.

He makes the throws that has to make, but he doesn't have to make that many of them. He's protected by the best OL in college football, one of the best running games in college football, the best defense in college football…It's not his fault that he's not given the reigns to show teams that he can do more than manage a game, but at the same time he hasn't proven he's anything more than that.

His arm is pretty average, but he is accurate. I wouldn't say Pennington accurate, but he's one of the more accurate QB's in this class. Great smarts and intangibles.

I think he's actually the exact type of guy to bring in behind Tannehill. Adds a good presence in the meeting room, a very competitive guy who won't settle for being the back-up, and a dependable game manager if you need him.

I think his ceiling is probably Andy Dalton. Good enough to tag along for the ride on a good team, but not good enough to win games when it counts against great teams.

I can't say that I've studied QB tape, although I should probably start looking at these Day 2 and early Day 3 guys. Derek Carr is being hyped as a 1st round pick. If that guy falls into the 2nd round, I'd snatch him up…Talk about talent. He needs some work, but he can flat out sling it.

Wow. Just watched some video of the guy. Love the fire and leadership. Freaking playmaker who looks like he has some good touch on the deep throws.

If they have a new GM, HC and OC I hope they take a good look at this guy.

1. David Fales
2. Kevin Hogan
3. Aaron Murray
4. AJ McCarron

I like what I've seen from Fales.

so is Hundley leaving or staying at UCLA?
I've heard some good things about the Wyoming QB, as well as the Eastern Illinois QB.

How far will Johnny football fall? Do we grab him at 18? Just talking, don't kill me.

He won't get out of the top 5, IMO.

If he did fall, yes. I would draft him.

Crucify me if you wish but if Miami drafted him I'd start supporting another team. His football talent is great and I realize the Fins currently are not a collection of saints, but he comes across as an obnoxious, enabled little punk. I don't like any of the reports I read about his attitude and seeming lack of respect for authority.

No. But they didn't need one in 1984 either.

Manziel is a baller. He makes all the throws, has unbelievable football instincts and confidence (2 things that will keep Tannehill from being elite), is athletic enough to make things happen with his feet, got a lot better this year at going through progressions and not rushing decisions, has really under rated accuracy…

Talent wise he should go top 5. I don't care about his size too much, nor do I think he'll need Jay Cutler's arm to be successful.

Obviously I worry about his character like you mentioned. On game day he's as passionate about winning as any QB I've seen coming out of school. He shows good leadership qualities. But to be successful in the NFL you have to maintain that same attitude Monday-Friday, and not be an idiot in the off season. That remains a question obviously.

He already comes from money so I'm not overly worried about newfound wealth suddenly changing him as a person. Right now it has strings attached, and once he doesn't have to live off of daddy's trust fund I could see him flaming out from substance abuse and too much partying.

The only first round guy I'd be okay with Miami taking should he slip would be Derek Carr.

Unfortunately I don't know if Miami has the resources to grab an extra QB this year because of the holes on the o-line, RB, TE and DT.

I'd be shocked if it was anything earlier than 5th or 6th round. Philbin loves Devlin.

I still think if the talent is there you have to take a chance on a guy in the draft.

I love having Matt Moore as a quality backup, but I wouldn't be surprised if they traded him to fill some holes and drafted another QB in a later round, maybe someone like T Boyd.

Not sure he has a heck of a lot of trade value with a 4 million dollar cap hit. I'd be more worried of Philbin's faith in Devlin causing Miami to release Moore. We witnessed with a lot of teams this year what happens when you don't have a viable back up (GB), or when you do (Chicago).

I think a QB will come much earlier than you anticipate Jammer. I don't think Miami is as high on Devlin as we think. They should realize they need better behind Tannehill.

I'd have to think those first 4 or 5 picks are used to restock the OL, get a DT, a TE upgrade and a more complete HB.

Well.. As long as he can play football I'm probably on board to be honest. I just feel like he's gonna be a flop in the NFL honestly.

No way we waste a pick on a QB when Philbin must win now. We have too many needs.

I have to agree with PR about Derek Carr. If he's there at 19 I'd consider it simply because he makes ALL of the throws and just needs some things cleaned up. I think he'll be the star that everyone hoped his brother would be.

If AJ McCarron is still there in the 3rd I'd consider it as well. He looks like a great backup/game manager in the making.

Depends who is on the board I guess. If you see a guy who you think is an immediate starter you grab him.

I know he doesn't have the height and weight but the kid has all the immeasurable! I watched 4 UGA games this year and was very impressed with him. Tore his ACL so he should be available in the 3rd or 4th round. We should snatch him up!

I really have no problem with this. Miami can plug a lot of holes via free agency and draft for value. Worst case scenario you have RGIII/Cousins with people asking if Garappolo will be traded.

A lot of people a very high on Fales. I like Carr but I don't think he'll last beyond the top of Round 2.

We drafted an OL, 2 dbs, a DE, a LB last year to fill holes and none of them did....yet. If there is a QB that can push RT or beat him out in a year or two, I'm all for it. The problem is that Philbin is a lame duck, he's gonna draft to win now which could turn out to be good if they pick starters. A rookie QB will not contribute this year.

Look at TB last year. Freeman was questioned but still considered the starter. Hickey seems to have input on the drafting of Glennon. That could totally play out in Miami this year, especially if Philbin is already floating the idea that he's down on Tannehill and "his" rookie will need time to develop. Buys him another year with his buddy Ross in this unholy matrimony.

I'm still on board with drafting a QB.

Honestly, after the first round guys, none of these QB's really get my juices going.

Based on what I've seen I wouldn't spend a #2 on Garappolo, personally. That said, I need to study him a lot more in depth before I'll put that in pen.

Garappallo is the only one I would want, and only if he slips to us in round 3, not round 2.

Starting to see some doubters now on Derek Carr.

Post Re: 2014 QB Prospects
I spent the night really watching and breaking down a few of Carr's game tapes. Here's what I came up with:

Quote:
Strengths: Arm strength, quick release, ball location long and short, foot quickness and athleticism, good size, gets rid of the football quickly, confident passer.

Weaknesses: Pocket presence needs to improve…always in shotgun/spread and not much experience under center…pressure affects him a lot.

Overall Impression: Throws a tight football with good velocity to the sideline and down the field. He has a really quick release with little wasted motion, keeping the football high and a nice compact delivery. Even when his feet aren’t set, Carr shows the ability to be accurate and throw with nice tough from awkward situations/throwing angles, and while moving back or laterally. Possesses the arm strength to make every NFL throw.

Good ball location, throwing it where only his man has a chance to make a play down the field, and throwing it where receiver can get YAC on short throws…His screens and swing passes are very good, with the ball in a spot that doesn’t have receiver lose momentum up field and/or towards the sideline. Is able to throw into tight windows and “throw a receiver open” with good anticipation. Can throw it into a bucket down field.

Shows the ability to make plays with confidence in critical situations. Seems to grow in confidence and urgency in the red zone and is very productive.

He shows the ability to read and look off a safety, but can he go from one side of the field to the other when going through progressions? Not much of that on tape, and when he does, he doesn’t see where he’s throwing well enough…Carr sticks to his first read too often, not moving on even when he is covered; can go through progressions with clean pocket, but offense is designed to get rid of it on 3rd step in drop.

Carr needs to step up in the pocket quicker when the pocket is collapsing, often staying in a small box within the pocket and taking hits or getting sacked because of it. He doesn’t feel pressure well enough. He panics under pressure too often, making panicked decisions and letting it affect his accuracy…he’s not willing to step up into pressure enough and would rather throw off his back foot or rush the throw.

Overall, Carr has good physical tools; his arm strength is very good, his accuracy and touch down the field is good, and throws with good ball location to entire field. He has good size, athletic ability, and a quick release to go along with that. However, a lot of Fresno State’s offense doesn’t translate to the NFL, and Carr needs to feel and deal with pressure better; in short, he looks soft sometimes. He also needs to learn how to read defenses from under center and go through progressions more often and confidently.

While he has the physical tools to succeed, I am not sure he can get over his struggles to deal with pressure and he will need time to adjust to an NFL offense.

I was thinking about it after I wrote that, and I realized I had almost the same exact thoughts on Nick Foles coming out.

I guess it all depends on how teams view Bortles, Bridgewater and Manziel, but I have serious doubt that Carr makes it past Minnesota in Round 2. Houston, Jacksonville, Oakland, Cleveland, Tampa Bay and Minnesota will have had two shots (Cleveland three) by that point.
