DAVIE—

The Dolphins remain adamant they did the right thing in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 23-21 loss to Buffalo when they passed 13 times among their 16 plays from scrimmage. The coaches felt they had to be aggressive instead of sitting on the lead and milking the clock.

"I don't think you can protect a 21-20 lead in this league," offensive coordinator Mike Sherman said. "I think you have to be fairly aggressive."

Sherman said he's been involved in games in which he tried to protect a 21-20 lead and ended up losing, 27-21.

"We're going to be aggressive with a one-point lead in the fourth quarter," Sherman said. "We're not going to sit on it."

Beyond that, the Bills were showing eight-man fronts, and the Dolphins have said they'll almost always pass against an eight-man front because they think it gives them a great advantage.

...

I agree with this philosophy. I also agree with sliding help to a side that needs it.

I don't disagree with that............but you have to protect your weak right side and contend for Williams, especially after you watch your QB get body-slammed to the ground.

Can't say it enough. Clabo failed them when needed most. If they wanted to pass then fine, but you needed someone to help Clabo, not let him go 1 on 1 with Williams.

A play action roll out would have been perfect on that 2nd and 8. Tannehill either gets more time to throw or can scramble to keep the clock moving.

In such an important moment in the game, ya I struggle to understand not sliding protection to that side.

Understand being aggressive and agree, but after the sack on Tanny I do not understand not providing Clabo help

Here are Miami's last 4 possessions. Their running strength is between Pouncey and Incognito. They ran 3 times and twice was to the right. I am getting tired of hearing that they feel they did the right thing. It didn't work, so, they didn't do the right thing.

2-D.Carpenter kicks 74 yards from BUF 35 to MIA -9. 34-M.Thigpen, Touchback.
1-10-MIA 20 (14:16) (Shotgun) 17-R.Tannehill pass incomplete deep right to 11-M.Wallace.
2-10-MIA 20 (14:11) (Shotgun) 17-R.Tannehill pass incomplete short left to 18-R.Matthews (37-N.Robey).
3-10-MIA 20 (14:07) (Shotgun) 17-R.Tannehill pass short middle to 11-M.Wallace to MIA 27 for 7 yards (23-A.Williams).
4-3-MIA 27 (13:29) (Punt formation) 2-B.Fields punts 35 yards to BUF 38, Center-92-J.Denney, out of bounds. PENALTY on BUF-93-J.Westerman, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at BUF 38.

1-10-MIA 20 (10:27) (Shotgun) 17-R.Tannehill sacked at MIA 11 for -9 yards (53-N.Bradham). PENALTY on BUF-24-S.Gilmore, Defensive Holding, 5 yards, enforced at MIA 20 - No Play.
1-10-MIA 25 (10:06) (Shotgun) 26-L.Miller up the middle to MIA 26 for 1 yard (99-M.Dareus).
2-9-MIA 26 (9:32) (Shotgun) 17-R.Tannehill pass deep left to 82-B.Hartline to MIA 45 for 19 yards (24-S.Gilmore; 35-J.Leonhard).
1-10-MIA 45 (8:55) (Shotgun) 26-L.Miller right guard to MIA 46 for 1 yard (53-N.Bradham).
2-9-MIA 46 (8:14) 17-R.Tannehill pass short left to 82-B.Hartline to BUF 45 for 9 yards (24-S.Gilmore).
1-10-BUF 45 (7:44) (Shotgun) 17-R.Tannehill pass short right to 10-B.Gibson to BUF 43 for 2 yards (31-J.Byrd).
2-8-BUF 43 (7:02) 17-R.Tannehill sacked at BUF 48 for -5 yards (94-M.Williams).

1-10-MIA 48 (3:39) 33-D.Thomas right tackle to 50 for 2 yards (55-J.Hughes).

1-10-MIA 46 (:23) (Shotgun) 17-R.Tannehill pass incomplete short right to 11-M.Wallace (21-L.McKelvin).
2-10-MIA 46 (:19) (Shotgun) 17-R.Tannehill pass incomplete deep left to 82-B.Hartline.

Thanks for posting that Dave. My face is officially back in my hands Mike Sherman style.

I remember all those drives well. That first incompletion to Wallace was just barely mistimed and would have been a big first down.

Here is the killer - the shotgun runs to Miller for a yard. First, your starting the guy back a few extra yards. 2nd, these plays are easily telegraphed and aren't consistently working. 3rd, Thomas not out of the Shotgun was at least getting 3-4 yards per try. That was also setting up play action rollouts.

I keep thinking of that TD pass to Clay. Just a quick outside throw that could move the ball and keep the clock moving.
