Post Dolphins show no hope of deep passing game without WR Mike W
Quote:
By Chris Perkins

DAVIE – We still haven’t seen the Dolphins’ downfield passing game, the one that’s supposed to be led by the speedster, wide receiver Mike Wallace, and the capable one, Brian Hartline. That’s a disappointment as well as an eye opener.

The fact that’s becoming apparent is the Dolphins don’t have a deep threat aside from Wallace. None. That’s why we haven’t seen the downfield passing game in training camp yet.

It’s not a big surprise the Dolphins don’t have a deep threat to replace Wallace. After all, he’s elite. There’s not many like him in the NFL. The surprise is the Dolphins have no one else – no one – that seems to be able to run a deep route, get open and catch the ball.

There’s no reason to panic. After all, we still haven’t seen the first pre-season game so there’s no reason to be worried. But it’s a concern that the Dolphins haven’t showed this hyped deep passing game on the field. It’s also a concern no one aside from Wallace, and to a lesser extent Hartline, can come close to being an effective deep threat. ...

Wallace said Thursday he has “a lot more strength in my groin,” which means he’s getting healthier. That’s a good thing because without Wallace the Dolphins have no deep passing game. None.

I like how Perkins says "There' no reason to panic", then two sentences later says "it's a concern".

Brian Hartline can. He's far from an "elite" downfield threat... but I trust him enough to be competent should something happen to Wallace.

Brian Hartline is not going to create the mismatches on defenses without Wallace. They don't have anyone else to respect deep if he's not in there. You can also kiss that idea goodbye if the O-line fails to protect Tanny, especially Mr. Martin.

It's a West Coast offense, not an Air Coryell system.
built on short and intermediate timing routes.

So you broke the bank for one of the game's best deep threats to predominantly run short and intermediate routes? Makes sense.

they're complaining about us not having deep threats.....plural.
As if this offense is going nowhere without speed demons....
The West coast offense will move the ball steadily up the field to a variety of players.

In "theory" the West Coast offense does that. We saw last year what happens when you cannot legitimately threaten anyone deep to create separation for receivers. So they did two things, they went out and got a guy in Keller they thought could run the seam and Wallace to run the deep patterns when needed.

Jets WR Clyde Gates has been "one of the stars of camp" so far.
It's becoming an annual tradition for Gates to star in training camp and then flame out when it counts. Those 4.37 wheels aren't nearly as effective when the hitting goes live. Gates is a good bet to stick on the final roster thanks to Santonio Holmes' foot woes, but he's just a weak situational deep threat.

Air Coryell is the original West Coast offense.

What does "great" mean in terms of the jets? He isn't in jail, injured, or on another team?

I have seen this conversation before around here

Quote:
West Coast offense

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In American football, "West Coast Offense" ("WCO") is a common term for an offense that places a greater emphasis on passing than on running.

There are two similar but distinct offensive-strategic-systems of play which are commonly referred to as "West Coast Offenses": (A) originally the Air Coryell system popularized by Don Coryell; or (B) following a journalism error, more commonly the offensive system popularized by Bill Walsh characterized by short, horizontal passing routes in lieu of running plays to "stretch out" defenses, opening up the potential for long runs or long passes.

there are major difference between what Don Coryall ran in San Diego and what the NFL deems the West Coast offense today.
