Marino went down with an Achilles injury (I had just taken my son home from the hospital as he was 3 days old, and propped him up to watch the Fins/Browns game when it happened). The Dolphins were 9-2 at Thanksgiving only to lose their last 5 games. Winning with Pederson just went to show how good Don Shula was even as he was winding down a Hall of Fame career.

November 14, 1993: Dolphins beat Eagles 19-14, Shula wins #325

In a November regular season game between Miami and Philadelphia, one of football’s most hallowed records fell. Legendary Dolphins head coach Don Shula recorded his 325th victory, the most ever by a coach in the National Football League. Shula toppled Chicago Bears legend George Halas’s mark of 324, and went on to finish with 347 career wins.

“It was one of those things where it was my rookie year, and to come from Penn State, playing with coach (Joe) Paterno and then being able to play for Coach Shula was just amazing. For him to break the all time record in my rookie season, that was special, especially since a lot of people didn’t know who the quarterback was with Doug Pederson being the quarterback on that day. So that was a lot of fun.”

The way that season ended, I would've fired Shula if I was the owner. You don't pull a choke job like that on my team and expect to keep your job. No excuse for that collapse.

Choke Job? :hithead:

While I'm not huge on the later yrs of Shula's ability to coach. This comment is really out there. There is not a coach that could overcome the loss of his starting Qb, backup Qb & playing with a 39 Yrs old Qb who was an average Qb in his prime. Plus add to the fact Miami lost their top CB in Vincent & starting DLman in Webster.

Sometimes things are what they are. Just bad luck.

If an owner fired a winning coach for not overcoming all that, then that owner is destined to have a losing franchise the entire time they are the owner.

So you would have brought in the next era of Dolphins football a couple of years earlier...

Firing Shula after that season would have been far worse than the way he was eventually fired.
That season was actually a pretty decent coaching job.

I feel like I may be too young to say anything intelligent about the season, but from what I recall (at the ripe old age of 6), it was far more just a string of bad luck than it was bad coaching on the part of Shula.
