The safe pick, as they see it, is for Miami to select North Carolina guard Jonathan Cooper.

That offensive linemen represent the "safe" move for three of four AFC East teams [Bills: Lane Johnson, Jets: Chance Warmack] shows a couple of things: 1. That this draft, while shy on elite skill-position players, has terrific depth at tackle and guard; and 2. The O-lines in this division need some work.

For Miami, a pick of Cooper would mark the third time in three years this franchise has spent a high selection on a lineman (Mike Pouncey, Round 1 in 2011; Jonathan Martin, Round 2 in 2012). But Richie Incognito, despite a solid 2012, is not an ideal fit for Joe Philbin's zone-blocking scheme, and the Dolphins just signed Lance Louis on a one-year deal to replace John Jerry.

The athletic Cooper could make Incognito (and his $4 million salary) expendable or push Louis on the right. Either way, he'd help.

Sooo in other words, we can wait to address the OT position and not trade up.

Yea, I guess we need another thread debating a trade...lol. Seriously though, I hear that there are three elite tackles and then the talent drops. Then I read that it's deep. I guess in two weeks all questions will be answered.

Agree to disagree.

I still see no guarantee that all three offensive tackles go in the top ten. While it is a possibility, there is still a very real chance that Johnson is still there at 12. Or it wouldn't be hard for the Dolphins to trade in front of San Diego to get him either.

For sure. I don't know the draft as well as you do. I hear you and some others saying we need to trade up, but then I read an article that says it's deep. Any players can bust and any can boom. I don't know what we are disagreeing on. We disagree with trading up.

Not my intention to push your buttons or anything, I just love debate and happen to disagree with you. Hopefully no hard feelings.

No problem buddy. I like the debating too. I believe in being respectful to each other even if we strongly disagree.

Agreed. And if you feel disrespected I sincerely apologize. Again, that was not my intent

I hope you are not talking about me. If you are, I didn't mean to disrespect you either. I've givin you props about your draft knowledge and I respect that. I don't know to much about these college players. I have seen way too many busts to trade up. IMO you only trade up to grab a stud QB. I have heard from you and some other bloggers, sports writers and talk show hosts that there are three tier one OL in this draft. I've also heard from the blogwriters, sportswriters and talkshow hosts that this is a deep OL class and that there is value in the later rounds. It's actually funny though, since no one knows how these players will turn out. ANyway, again, thanks for the draft knowledge Sweve.

I really don't care for where we are sitting in this draft. I'd rather trade down or up, but I don't like the value vs need at 12. I would trade up for an elite corner, but I don't think it would be wise to trade up for an OT. We certainly need to address the OT early, but so do we need a couple good corners -- or at least one solid one this year and next.

Oh jeez. That's worse than trading up for an OL. I would actually trade up for a longsnapper or punter.

Well, it's hard to find a good quality towel boy these days. If you want that high quality H20, you need to trade up to get the best.

Mak a question out of curiosity. I agree that no one knows for sure how a player is going to turn out. With that out of the way do you think that people who, do try and evaluate players the best they can, say that there are only 3 top tier players at a position and then saying that same position as being deep are contradictory statements?

Yes, but I haven't heard anyone contradict themselves on the boards and/or the talking heads on tv/radio. Swerve believes there are three stud tackles. Other people believe the class is deep. Me, I have know idea. That's why I ask questions and listen. I just don't believe in trading up for a player (unless a QB). Maybe that's why I'm not a GM...lol

Mak is it possible that in an evaluation there are 3 elite players at a position and then maybe there are 6 to 8 really good players at the same position? So you could possibly get what would normally be a 2nd round talent in the 3rd round or something like that?

So both positions could be correct. There maybe 3 elite players at a position and that position is also deep in that quality talent (not elite) lasting into rounds that is usually does not.

Just because there are only 3 top-tier guys does not mean that it isn't a deep draft. Just because a guy is a quality starter doesn't mean he's going to be an all-pro. The top 3 guys have consistent all-pro potential. There are 6-10 other guys that are not quite "all-pro" material, but will be good quality starters in this league

Nope. You're all good Mak. You're as entitled to your opinion as I am.
Thanks for the compliments.

That's my beef with the media as far as the tackles go. I think they are misleading people.
