They did poorly in the draft.

With Long gone, the Dolphins can close the book on the 2008 draft. They had four picks in the first 66 picks and have no one left (Long, Phillip Merling, Chad Henne, Kendall Langford). Throw in the fact all five players taken in the first three rounds of the 2009 draft are gone and you understand why the Dolphins are relying so heavily on free agency right now.

Makes some sense. However, let's hope with the abundance of talent in this draft that they sure up holes with top notch guys. Personally, I would rather Miami get Austin with the 12th pick (if they can) and then trade back into the first round and snag Tyler Eifert, so what if you need to part with trading a draft pick if it means getting quality starters from potentially day one.

I know their are still holes at corner/o-line, safety, so some combination of drafting smart to fill these voids is a necessity for the future versus missing badly as they did in 2009.

Long and Langford are gone because other teams were willing to pay more than the Dolphins. That doesn't suggest poor drafting.

Merling didn't turn out so well and I'm not sure if he's still in the league or not?

Henne is a backup in Jack I believe?

So 3 out of 4 are still in the league with 2 of the 4 getting good money as FA's. Of the OT leaving their respective team, Long may have gotten the biggest contract no?

I believe Donald Thomas signed with Indy to be a starter. It wasn't a bad draft, its just those guys don't fit the current model. They missed on their QB and that changes a lot.

They are relying on free agency right now, because the draft isn't until next month.
