 Dolphins seriously considering Xavier Rhodes
Quote: The Miami Herald has been told that the Dolphins "really like" Florida State CB Xavier Rhodes. Reporter Armando Salguero expects the Fins to "seriously consider" drafting cornerbacks, presumably with the 12th overall pick. Defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle runs a zone scheme, and Rhodes is more of a bump-and-run corner. He's 6-foot-1 1/2 and 210 pounds, though, and could replace Sean Smith. No shocker here but now that we found a suitable receiver I would definitely be happy with Rhodes for our first pick at #12, FSU usually produces some good DB's as well, and Kevin Coyle could mold his own corner into a solid product

Re: Dolphins seriously considering Xavier Rhodes
Yep. It looks like Miami will address their DB needs in the draft. Read that the Dolphins ran the Mississippi State Pro Day in regards to the DB, and the staff have been involved with working out the DB at a lot of the Pro Days.
Quite sure they will be at FSU Pro Day on the 19th.

Re: Dolphins seriously considering Xavier Rhodes
I would love to see a scenario where we're able to get Rhodes in the 1st, Rambo in the 3rd, Mathieu in the later rounds (5th-7th), and sign Antoine Cason in free agency. Then our secondary would look like this going into camp:
CB - Cason, Rhodes, Patterson, Marshall, Carroll, Mathieu S - Jones, Clemons, Wilson, Rambo
While it wouldn't be an elite unit right away, it's a good start.

I believe corners are only as good as a pass rush. Just like I believe WRs are only as good as a Qb...see ARZ. JMO.

That being said though, if you can get a very good CB and he offers better value any other player, I think you take him. Phins, smokescreen? Could be, but Rhodes has to be a consideration. He is now in that group, which has indeed changed with what the Dolphins have done in FA so far.

Re: Dolphins seriously considering Xavier Rhodes
At this point after signing WRs, LBs and Keller, I would go with OL or guard. A NFL team only goes as far as it's QB goes and an OL or guard would open up the running game and then we can go over the top with our new "weapons". Corners never win a SB for you. JMO.

I have been preaching OL and DL for a good bit of time on this board, so we agree on that. But to say this team does not need DB is a not good.

I didnt want to go corner with our first pick but now I very much believe that we will. Most likely Rhodes, possibly Trufant.

I never said that, I said I don't like drafting them in the 1st rd. There is another thread where I said take one or more in the 2nd-3rd rds.

I will make a last comment on this and let it be, because me and you disagree on this. Most folks think you can get OG later in the draft, but IF he offers such value and has potential to be a great player like Wommack can be, I have no problem taking him in the 1st round. I feel the same way about cornerbacks as well.

Re: Dolphins seriously considering Xavier Rhodes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GELytS0ne24In this video he looks plenty physical. Amazing tackler. But I do have doubts about his speed at the next level. It seems like defenders were getting a step on him. I would prefer to take Werner if available (i think there is a likelihood) in round 1 and take a corner in round 2 and one in round 3. Maybe take Jamar Taylor and Leon McFadden. Would also like Brent Grimes. Those are 3 nice corners to field.

Re: Dolphins seriously considering Xavier Rhodes
Looks like Armando has changed his tune. He's now hearing the Dolphins are not that interested in Rhodes because he is more of a press corner and they want to run more of a zone scheme (which I hate, btw). Quote: Last week, I said the Dolphins were heavily interested in Florida State cornerback Xavier Rhodes. I jumped the gun.
Rhodes is a fine player. He looks the part at 6-1. He plays with some nastiness. And the Dolphins do indeed like him. But that has to be measured in degrees and I was told recently that he probably isn't the guy in the first round because he's not a 100 percent system fit for the Dolphins.
Me: :-(
Rhodes needs to be in a system where he's getting his hands on a receiver. He might be able to learn the discipline of combo coverages that inlcude a lot of zone work and playing quarters. But that's not his game. He's more a press corner, folks.
So there's that.

I do believe there is a such a thing as putting out false information, especially when it comes to NFL teams and their draft intentions. That said though, if you are wanting to pat yourself on the back that much and are willing to overlook this fact, go right ahead. Personally, a kick in the butt sounds more in line for being so gullible........

I had been thinking the "interest" in him was the smoke screen. We'll see which is right.

Re: Dolphins seriously considering Xavier Rhodes
I think Xavier Rhodes, Bjoern Werner, Tavon Austin, Jonathan Cooper and Chance Warmack are all in play at #12.
Yes, I think the Dolphins could look to take an OG at #12 as well as Tavon Austin STILL being in play.

Re: Dolphins seriously considering Xavier Rhodes
My ideal scenario would be that we are able to sign Brent Grimes in free agency, use one of our second round selections to trade for Albert, and then select Desmond Trufant with our 12th pick (or Bjoern Werner if he is there, but I see him going in the top 10).

Welcome to the boards! Thank you much! That's the thing, for once I don't feel like my ideal scenario is something that is out of reach for us. It's been a while since things have looked up like this. I have to (finally) give some credit to Jeff Ireland for putting things together for us. It doesn't mean anything until we get on the field, but it's nice to be excited about what I see on paper for once
