It's amazing at how important a back up quarterback has become. You could have all the pieces in place, but if you lose your starting QB without a viable option behind him and not make the playoffs. With Matt Moore's slow learning curve in learning a new offense, he may do even better long term to take a back up job worth $5 million a season. With quarterbacks coming out ready to start in the NFL, I'd like for the Dolphins to do their homework and draft someone in the middle rounds rather than pay a backup $5 million a season. I don't think free agency allows this luxury.

Quote:
Dolphins desperately want Matt Moore back

BEN VOLIN: The most coveted free agent from the Dolphins’ roster this offseason might be a guy who played just 56 snaps in 2012 – backup quarterback Matt Moore. He could fetch a two- or three-year contract worth $5 million per season. The Dolphins, though, badly want Moore back. Several members of the organization – Ireland, Tannehill, offensive coordinator Mike Sherman – have called in the past two weeks to lobby him to come back. Sherman called Moore five times last week alone. And don’t rule out a return. Moore likes it in Miami and has become friends with Tannehill, and would come back if a significantly better opportunity doesn’t present itself.

NBC SPORTS: The Dolphins want Moore back "badly," but it's unrealistic to think he'll re-sign unless Moore simply decides he wants to hold a clipboard. (Marc Bulger, Kyle Orton, and Billy Volek have done that in recent years.) We still expect Moore to pursue an opportunity to start, and teams like Cleveland, Arizona, and the Jets could give him a much more realistic chance than Miami.

I don't think Moore has a slow learning curve.

I just don't think he is a practice player, but when the live bullets fly, he takes it to another level.

Hopefully Moore gets his heart broke and decides to stay in Miami. I'd like to see him stay on as our backup. He's an excellent backup.

Possibly, but he didn't play well last preseason ... which isn't really a "real" game either.

$5 million a year? Being a backup QB in this league is a nice gig, if you can get it.

To me it seems the exact definition of a good back up QB... He is a guy you feel comfortable with not taking a lot of snaps in practice yet will still be able to step right in during a game if needed.

There are guys that embrace it. Moore could easily bank money, conserve his body and still end up competing for starting jobs at different teams, menotring young QB's etc.. Its an actual desired position, that is why our team is trying to get him to stay so badly. Well Ireland sees potential future trade as well Im sure..
