The moments of excellence Chad Henne exhibited occasionally during his four seasons with the Dolphins were on display again when he relieved injured Jacksonville starter Blaine Gabbert 3 1/2 weeks ago.

Taking over on the Jaguars’ second series, Henne became the first quarterback since Steve Young in 1987 to come off the bench and throw four touchdown passes with no interceptions, hitting 16 of 33 passes for 354 yards. The Jaguars almost pulled off an upset, falling 43-37 in overtime at AFC South leader Houston.

Henne was solid the next week in a victory over Tennessee, but the past two games were more typical of the inconsistency Henne showed in going 13-18 as a starter in Miami. He completed 39 of 84 passes (46.4 percent) while throwing one TD pass and three interceptions in losses to Buffalo (34-18) and the New York Jets (17-10).

Considered the Dolphins’ quarterback of the future when he was drafted in 2008, Henne became an afterthought when a shoulder injury in Week 4 cut short his 2011 season. He had what he called a conversation with former Dolphins coach Tony Sparano about joining him with the Jets and also considered Seattle, but ultimately chose Jacksonville, for whom he’ll start against Miami at 1 p.m. Sunday at Sun Life Stadium.

First-year Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey was glad to get Henne, whom he called an excellent mentor who is now a good starter.

“His experience and leadership and his field command were very important,” Mularkey said, “especially (with) having a young quarterback like Blaine.”
