glad we "reached" for Tannehill this past draft
I think he's better than every QB prospect in the next draft class and he's using this season as a stepping stone for next year. Glad we didn't wait for Barkley. Quote: ESPN's Adam Schefter stated on Mike & Mike Wednesday morning that USC QB Matt Barkley is viewed around the NFL as a "late first-round pick." Schefter cited a relatively weak incoming quarterback class as reasons for Alex Smith and Michael Vick to "absolutely" have strong offseason markets. Smith is a trade candidate, while Vick is expected to be released after the Super Bowl. Per Schefter, Heisman finalist Collin Klein is viewed as a "late-round pick," and scouts "aren't completely wowed" by West Virginia QB Geno Smith. Barkley showed underwhelming arm strength as a college senior and was interception prone. We wouldn't be surprised if he fell to the second round.

Re: glad we "reached" for Tannehill this past draft
You had 4 realistic options (given that Ireland wasn't outbidding Washington for Griffin):
Give Moore a one year audition
Overpay Alex Smith to be a game manager
Overpay Matt Flynn to be a game manager
Draft a QB
I honestly think Tannehill will be fine and by fine I mean a good starting QB who will win games. Is he the answer and a franchise guy? I don't know. I like his potential better than Barkley or Smith.

If you look at those top 3 options, all come with an extreme risk of giving a big contract to guys who have not impressed in their careers outside of 2011, or a single game or two. Tannehill wasn't a reach and was the right choice for Miami. Now, let's hope he stays healthy and continues to develop.

Re: glad we "reached" for Tannehill this past draft
Us drafting Tannehill wasn't a reach, it was an inevitability once Philbin convinced Sherman to put pen to paper and be his offensive coordinator. The way I saw it, Sherman and Tannehill were a package deal. Ireland and Philbin seemed more than fine with that idea. So to me, given all that our staff knew about Tannehill, it wasn't a reach. They have a plan for this kid, and I guarantee it involves him becoming one heck of a quarterback, otherwise they probably wouldn't have drafted him 8th overall. No matter how much you like a kid, you don't stick your neck out unless you're pretty sure he's going to pan out.
