I gotta say the talent on this defense is amazing... we're 1 pass rusher and 1 defensive back shy of an elite defense.
For sure.
Come on Ireland. Spend some money and get us both next year!!
We won't have the money to make two big free agent signings, or even one for that matter. After we re-sign Long, Hartline, Fasano, Bush, Smith, Starks, plus sign our rookies we'll have very little if nothing much left. I think I read somewhere that we're only about $45M under the cap right now.
Long - $10M
Bush - $6M
Hartline - $6M
Smith - $8M
Starks - $5M
Fasano - $4M
Rookies - $6M
Total - $45M
Now go easy on me because these are all estimations, and I'm sure the actual contracts could be more or less depending on each negotiation, but I think roughly this is about what we'll expect to pay each guy at the end of the day. The rookies too is a rough guess as well. I'm not even going to get into bad money from the Marshall and Davis trades. But the overall point I'm trying to make is that after we re-signed Wake last year, we left ourselves just enough money to sign the talent we have and move on.
Now if we're willing to let guys like Fasano and Starks go and draft replacements, then that will free up quite a bit of space, but as good as Starks has been in the middle with Soliai, we've got to re-sign him. Plus, I don't have a ton of faith in Clay and Engew right now, so Fasano is probably a guy you want to keep as well. Bottom line, we need to continue to build in the draft because our cap number is deceiving.
