Re: 4th and 3 or less
Big difference between 4th and 3 vs 4th and 1.
Also a big difference between a 49 and 54 yard FG.
If it's 4th and 1, I run it with the J-Train. Anything else I kick the FG.
If it's a 54-55 yarder, I'll let Tannehill get it on a roll out, even at 4th and 3. I don't trust Carp from that distance, especially in Cincy where it's usually a little windy.

Re: 4th and 3 or less
If its the game winning score? Carpenter.
While he has been bad so far, I cant believe he suddenly cant do it. The guy was 91% at 40 - 49 last season and is still 72% career from that distance.
so 72% of the time it works every time.......
4th & 1 or less, the J train....

Hands down a Tannehill pass. Roll the kid out. If he doesn't see an open man through the air he'll easily pick up three with his legs.

Carpenter. If you can not use him when needed then Miami should look for another kicker. imo.

This. You pay the guy to kick field goals in clutch situations and he needs to shake out of this funk or unfortunately bring in competition.
However, of course it depends on what juncture of the game it is in order to fully decide what to do.

Re: 4th and 3 or less
Depends on whether you are up or down, how much time is left, and what the offense has been doing all day. I have defended Carpenter a lot the last few weeks but he has to show something before I would be willing to trot him out there with the game on the line unless we had to. I might go with the Bush run for the element of surprise.

Carpenter. He's in a slump, but he'll get it figured out. Even his short kicks weren't "down the middle" last week as they usually are. Maybe it's the hair;)

Re: 4th and 3 or less
Dave Hyde wrote: 1. Dan Carpenter is under the spotlight because of missed field-goal attempts that could have cost games. So let’s look at Carpenter’s games in the broader perspective of his career to see what, if anything, they say.
At issue, namely, is whether Carpenter is as trustworthy as a kicker as he once was. Since those missed kicks were from 47- and 48-yards against the Jets and a 51-yarder against Arizona, let’s break down the stats of his career with that in mind. First, his opening years.
Year Total pct (NFL rank) 40-45 yds 46-higher
2008 84.0 (20th) 2-5 8-9
2009 87.1 (7th) 3-5 6-6
No wonder Tony Sparano loved Carpenter at this time. He was 14-15 on kicks of higher than 46 yards. That’s elite. Let’s move on now.
Year Total pct (NFL rank) 40-45 yds 46-higher
2010 72.3 (29th) 9-10 6-15
2011 85.3 (11th) 9-9 4-7
2012 62.5 (29th) 1-1 0-3
So while Carpenter is almost a given from 40-45 yards – he’s made 19 of 20 attempts – his accuracy from distance has slipped. He is 10-25 on kicks from over 45 yards the past two years.
Let’s throw in pressure kicks, too. Carpenter entered this year 4-4 on game-tying or winning attempts in the fourth quarter or overtime. The longest was a 44-yarder against Green Bay to win in overtime in 2010.
He’s 1-2 this year in that department. He made a 41-yarder in the final minute against the Jets to send the game into overtime and missed a 48-yarder in overtime. (The 47-yard miss early in the fourth quarter against the Jets doesn’t fall into this statistical category considering the Dolphins led 17-13 at the time. Nor does the 51-yard miss against Arizona early in the fourth quarter).
Bottom-line: Carpenter still is a trustworthy kicker – if you measure his range. In the last couple of years, that means get the ball inside the 45-yard line. That’s no great surprise. All kickers are better closer. But it’s something that’s become pronounced with Carpenter. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miam ... 5171.story

Re: 4th and 3 or less
Barry Jackson had a great stat today. Miami is 2-10 since 2009 in games decided by 3 points or less....Carpenter has missed 9 field goals in those games.

Re: 4th and 3 or less
I say you kick the fg if its within a range your kicker normally doesnt have trouble with.. A FG = win or lose.. tannehill pass = 1st down or lose where things could be potentially worse even if you get the 1st a false start or holding call sack anything that would back up the kick even more or worse a turnover.

Re: 4th and 3 or less
3 weeks ago kick...lose 2 weeks ago kick....lose Today kick .... Almost lose Sometimes these guys are just stupid. How many more times are they going to force a kicker who is in a slump to kick from beyond 50 and give the other team late momentum.

You're D is playing great...just punt and pin them deep if you don't feel confident about going for it.
