High 2nd Pick? Not so fast.
Everyone keeps saying Miami will get a high second for this deal. Take a look at the Colts schedule. Its not out of the realm that they will finish close to 8-8. Miami most likely will be looking at the upper part of the middle 2nd Rd.

It's a gamble on both sides. Armando Salguero wrote: Although he will never say it, Ireland obviously believes the Colts to be rebuilding and is banking on them having a high pick in next year's draft so, in his mind, he's not just getting a No. 2 but potentially a high No. 2. Grigson, meanwhile, sees that his draft picks will be a lot lower now that he's got a set of corners he's happy about to play games in this pass-happy league. He believes Colts coach Chuck Pagano can get major production out of Davis that obviously Joe Philbin and his staff didn't think they could get. And he believes he can compete and win a lot of games this year, particularly with the Davis addition.
One more thing: It doesn't bother Grigson that Davis has been dogged by "character" issues that include drinking. He believes the 24-year-old can be molded and will mature. Read more here: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins ... rylink=cpy

There is always a chance they can be decent but its a calculated gamble on Ireland's part. As it stands, the Colts are predicted to be a sub .500 team and that probably means a top 40 pick. That is Ireland's rationale.
Didn't the Dolphins trade Chris Chambers for a 2nd round pick a few weeks into the 07 season? I don't think its out of the question that they could still trade the pick for a valuable player before Week 1.

Chris Chambers was not that valuable. SD over paid for him, because they had to have a Wr.

Chris Chambers was not that valuable. SD over paid for him, because they had to have a Wr. Agreed, but he gave them some good production for that year and the following. Miami doesn't have to flip the 2nd rounder, but having it may allow Ireland to deal say a 3rd rounder for a guy that can come in and be an upgrade over what they have now. A 3rd round pick can net you a decent, productive guy ala Chambers 07 to come in and improve the group. I still think Miami poaches a CB or two off waivers to fill void of secondary depth.

dude, their defense is garbage right now, and yes that includes with Davis. it's still a good gamble and the pick will be in the top 44 picks.

It would take a change of fortune for that to happen.
