The Dolphins worked out free agent LBs Ernie Sims and Omar Gaither on Monday.

Miami is transitioning from a 3-4 to a 4-3 scheme, and Sims and Gaither are both lightweight 4-3 outside 'backers. Neither player has been signed yet.

Can either of them rush the passer?
We need versatile linebackers that can stop the run, rush the passer, and maybe cover a tightend/runningback from time to time.

2 of the 3 for both players. Stop the run and cover TE's.

Sims was the 9th overall pick of the 2006 draft.

Neither of them have had impressive stats at all.

Perhaps they are loading up an extra LB back-up, if these guys are good on special teams.

With the right defensive schemes anyone can rush the passer, its all about your DC understanding how to exploit weak spots in the opposing offense...

These guys to me are simply names and add some depth/competition. Nothing more than that... They are not premier pass rushers or players at their position..

Koa Misi is facing felony charges. As of now, Burnett and Dansby are the only true starting LBs we really have to play a 4-3. Bringing in Gary Guyton, and possibly Sims, gives us some players to compete for that 3rd LB spot. You also need speed cover LBs to run a 4-3 defense. They are not particularly there to rush the passer, that is what the front 4 are suppose to do. The LBs in a 4-3 hit the gaps when blitzed and don't necessarily use pass rushing moves and rely more on their speed. They need to be good tacklers, have good instincts, and range.

Rarely does any team have 3 starting LBs that consist of all 3 being elite players. You need your sidekicks...

Rushing the passer is not a top requirement for a 4-3 OLB.

Very true. Maybe the reports of us running a 50/50 mix of 4-3 and 3-4 aren't exactly true. From the moves we've been making it looks more like we're leaning heavily towards a 4-3 defense.

And better than both those guys.

78 tackles and 2 sacks in 14 games...Which by the way is about the same stats he has had the past 5 years

I agree, he's probably not a good choice. I don't think our new staff wants to keep patching up the roster with older free agents, rather I think they'll keep building this team through the draft whether we have to suffer through some growing pains or not.

So why bring in these two stiffs. Farrior is a much better player. Unless it's money, it's a no brainer

Leadership and he has missed only 10 games in 15 years...He is a far better option than those two never has beens
